  • Instagram is reshaping museums. What does that mean for art?
    Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
    There’s a new kind of art installation popping up in cities across the world. It isn’t designed to showcase classical paintings, or to house impressive historical artifacts - it’s designed to be photographed for Instagram. These might not feel like real museums, but they’re a reflection of a real change happening in the museum world right now.
    Museums - both new pop-ups and traditional institutions - are capitalizing on smartphone culture by creating spaces whose main appeal is being a backdrop for a great selfie. As more kinds of retail experiences move online, spaces like this - where digital reproducibility through social media is an active part of the design - are only going to get more common.

      I think it’s ur video on Cavanaugh (don’t care if spelled wrong) is bullshit. I understand that u took a sarcastic approach to the issue but most of what u made out to seem bad like stating the claims come at a sketchy time, usually many years after it happened and write when the person is running an election, is very true. You also used tucker Carlson as one of ur examples and he is not a good source considering he mostly lies about everything right wing. The reason why people move on is because they realize that it is stupid to care about something that happened 30 years ago. You don’t see Steven Tyler getting arrested for all the drugs he admitted to doing back in the 70’s

    I don't see anything wrong with people taking pictures, however I do have a problem if what goes inside their heads when they enter a museum is concerning how many likes they can get on social media rather than genuinely appreciating the work or critically think about the holistic meaning behind these art pieces. People should go to museums to get a better understanding of art and to appreciate the work surrounding it instead of doing it for instant gratification on social media or bragging rights.

      @pendlera2959 5 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      That's actually a great comparison! It makes me think of Banksy's Dismaland. But considering that amusement parks are trying to make you feel something or use your imagination, why wouldn't their contents count as art? It's like, does an ice cream parlor count as a restaurant?

    • @Walexo45
      @Walexo45 5 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      @@pendlera2959 Technically, Art Museums are not made for "Distraction" or "Entertainment", but for presenting thoughtful, controversial, and interesting art pieces. They are meant to put the person in a state of reflexion over many aspects of life, not to "have fun".
      On the other hand, amusement parks are distracting and fun. They have minimal artistic merit, but doesn't make someone "think" about many concepts in our society.
      Also, for the ice cream parlor, we could consider it Restaurant, as it sells food mainly.

    • @pendlera2959
      @pendlera2959 5 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      You don't eat ice cream for nourishment; you eat it for fun. Yet you still say it's a restaurant because of what is sold (food), not the ultimate purpose of the food that is sold.
      I disagree that art is meant for reflection. Even though I'm an artist, I actually find it difficult to decipher the meaning of many narrative artworks. I just see a crowded scene or a bunch of people in a field. Other people can read so much into those works, and I'm like, what are they talking about? But when I see something that just looking at it makes me happy, even if it's just some abstract shapes, I can gush over it and the same people are like, what are *you* talking about?
      I like to look for the beauty and wonder in ordinary, overlooked things. To admire the color shift in a dog's toenail, or notice how just by looking at it through a puddle of water asphalt becomes beautiful. I want to share those moments with the world. Just the noticing is enough. I am not even close to a professional level, but if I ever get into a gallery, I won't be hoping my viewers are thinking great thoughts about the meaning of life and suffering and the universe. I just want them to see the same beauty I do and be happier for it. I don't want them to think, "ah, this piece is about how we miss the details in our lives and the artist wants to remind us to enjoy the little things." No, I want them to put them in a playful mood, so when they leave they're on the hunt for beauty in their own lives. If you decipher the message, but don't have fun, I failed. If you have fun, but don't consciously think about it, then I've succeeded. Having fun be its goal doesn't make my work any lesser as art.

    I spend a lot of time at the Louvre because I study there. And everytime, I see lots and lots of people, walking around, experiencing the whole thing through their screen and not actually with their eyes. There was this one girl that walked down the Great Gallery, full of Italian Renaissance masterpieces (I am talking Raphael, Da Vinci, Botticelli, Mantegna and many more) not looking, even once, at any of them, and finally stopping...in front of a mirror, to take a selfie. I do feel like these people come because they only want to recreate the same pictures they saw on Instagram. If you actually go to the lesser known parts of the Louvre (and by that, I just mean places that are not around Mona Lisa, the Samothrace and the Venus of Milo), people seem to genuinely care about the art they just paid 15 euros to see.

    You can’t change how people view art. Those people that are just there to use the art as a cool background for their photos wouldn’t have gone to the museum anyway. But for the people that want to see the art but also want to take pictures of it, it is a way to show how you perceive that piece of art and document it. So when you see the pic you can remember better what you felt in that setting

And I could literally spend 3 whole days straight going to the same museum to understand every piece I found interested in. And most of the time, I'll bring my camera or my phone to document it and store it in my phone along with the description to take sometimes when I'm at home, doing some research to truly understand the meaning of the arts behind.

    On the one hand, it's great to see installation art and immersive exhibitions being celebrated by the public, we should always allow space for art to be practiced in multiple ways. On the other, seeing visitors treat these spaces as little more than backdrops or props for social media rather than actually experiencing and appreciating them in the present is sad. I'm also annoyed at how unoriginal some of these spaces are! As a millennial and native New Yorker, the sudden rise of these "museum of x food" places has been kind of a bizarre trend to witness.
    And then to see that many of them have ostensibly copied and profited greatly from concepts derived from established artists like Yayoi Kusama is especially upsetting. Like damn, the traditional art world is also extremely shady in their business dealings but at least museums also try to do public programming and open their collections to education and research. These Instagram "museums" are making $40, $50 a head for what? Building corporate sponsorships and more marketing so people can saturate their feeds with the same content?

    Don’t mind other people’s intentions. If they want to spend $40 to get a perfect instagram picture, so be it. If you want to spend $40 to be submersed in art, then you do you. I only mind people taking pictures when it may cause damage to the beauty. For example, flash cameras on old oil paintings. But ultimately, the money we spend still goes towards the museum and the artists, so whether you get the full immersive experience or not, you’re still supporting artists.

People who are dismissive of modern social-platform driven art are snobbish and missing the whole point; you don't have to like it, but it represents a time, a culture, a collective social mindset, it's all a societal mirror regardless of how synethic, disgenious, surface-level or pretentious it may seem, that will be characteristic definitive of the time, the people and their culture for those in the future looking back. While there's a time and place for traditional art museums with white walls and picture frames, they can feel isolating and dull sometimes, and I think there should be other ways to view art. I think there's an upside and downside to these type of "instagrammable" pop-up shows. Personally, I love it when art museums are interactive and immersive. There aren't too many places in everyday life where you can experience dream-like rooms, infinite mirrors, or color-coordinated ball pits. And the reason so many people go is because it's a fun and new experience. Also, as a photographer, these type of art museums feel like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory for artists and photographers. And if these type of museums get people engaged and interested in art/photography, then why not have them?
    However, I also see the concern with these type of museums. It can feel just as isolating and dull to enter a crowded room where everyone has a camera to their face and no one's really appreciating the art. Or when people only go to these type of museums purely for instagram clout instead of enjoying the exhibits. I think the best way to try and alleviate these problems is to have, like they said in the video, certain areas with limited camera access or limit the number of people who can be in the museum at once to make it a more intimate experience with the viewer.
    Also, another reason why these type of pop-up art shows are so popular is because the viewer ultimately gets something out of it- there's an exchange. They get a picture or video which will then boost their social media presence. In contrast, traditional art isn't really an exchange- the art isn't necessarily there to please anyone, it's there to be art. So I definitely understand how people are afraid these type of pop-up shows will make art overall more consumerist instead of art just to be art.

      Sarah Nicole But do you really feel these people are becoming more interested in the ‘art’? Or just a good time and some followers? And if their just there to take pics, wouldn’t that mean the ‘appreciation’ of ‘art’ is coming to an end? How can there be an upside to this for anyone that truly into ‘art’?

    • @sarahnicole461
      @sarahnicole461 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I dunno. I guess it kind of delves into the questions of what constitutes "art"-- which is already a wormhole of answers. While I do see some possible concerns with these type of museums, I don't think they're inherently bad. Also, even if people are solely going to these museums just to have a good time and to get a good picture for Instagram, does that make it any lesser art? People may not be interacting with the art in traditional ways like staring at a picture frame for 5 minutes. But what if the point isn't to "appreciate" the art in traditional ways. Maybe entering an art museum like a photo shoot is an artistic experience in and of itself. Maybe it's just a different experience than what we're typically used to. The only problem is if these type of museums become the predominant way of experiencing art due to museums potentially feeling the pressure to boost sales and increase attendance.

    • @TheMagicOwL127
      @TheMagicOwL127 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@sarahnicole461 the thing is, "experiencing art" is not about staring at a canvas, or a sculpture, it's about thinking, and feeling, a lot of people don't know how to do it because they don't get the language, museums should care about that. Art is about emotion, it must resonate with the spectator. Is not about playing, is about introspection through a piece, is about reading a message in its most essential form. It's about beauty, pain, sadness, politics, etc.

      Sarah Nicole i more or less agree with what hoodedlady says and i also recognize that i have a more traditional understanding of art and art appreciation. a certain degree of familiarity with the history and philosophy of art allows for a greater appreciation of works. this comes off as pretentious because it honestly is. "It was called Installation Art. Suddenly, art wasn't just confined to the walls of a museum. It was immersive and interactive. Viewers were part of it. "
    Sorry to break it to you, but this was going on LONG before modern artists in the 1960s. From the first buildings Christians were allowed to build after persecution stopped in the 300s, Christian churches were designed to be immersive, whole person experiences for those who entered. The art surrounded you, enveloping you and leading you forward down the center aisle to the sanctuary, to the altar, where you encountered God in art, word, song, community, prayer, and sacrament. Now THAT'S what I call an interactive experience, interacting with both body and soul.
    "Themed rooms" and "immersive, three-dimensional artwork designed specifically for a certain space"? The Renaissance masters will do you you one better: how about the artist not only painting the picture or carving the statue, but also DESIGNING the WHOLE BUILDING around it to advance his theme? This is exactly what master church artists DID in the renaissance and the Baroque period in Europe: Giotto, Michelangelo, Bernini, and Borromini to name a few.
    In fact, the only reason why much of the art was "confined to the walls of a museum" in the first place, is because it was removed from its original, artist-intended, immersive, interactive setting: Catholic churches.

    From a commercial standpoint, more visitors is certainly better, but from an artistic standpoint I can't help but feel that this sort of 'selfie' attitude tends to destroy the artistic integrity of the pieces and the space. Instead of making it about this wonderful piece of art with its twists and whorls and vibrant colors, or a maze-like installation that forces you to confront just how small you really are, you take a selfie and you make it about *you*. Not everything has to be about *you*.

Only concerned with what other people will think about you, if they will click or not on a button and validate one’s virtual existence on line... it is so poor and feels so wrong in so many ways... it is the ultimate alienation and lack of personality. • @toflrost
      @toflrost 5 ปีที่แล้ว +159

      Sincerelyy Eccentric no it's not. as an artist (oil painter) i just see this as an evolution of how people interact with art. people have always focused on themselves and wanted to interact with art; from people touching byzantine icons because they thought it would bring them closer to god, to people commissioning self portraits, to people interacting with performance art. and it's not as if because museums like this exist everyone will suddenly stop appreciating classical art. these museums are pretty and they're fun; i welcome them :-)
      edit: i will say, though, that i dislike the commercial aspect of it. i like the concept of these museums, but making some of them so expensive exposes how the idea has been turned into a cash grab by so many people. i understand we artists need to eat, but... something about the price just rubs me the wrong way.

    I'm glad someone has finally mentioned the increase in attendance to art shows via photo taking because I am really fed up of only hearing negatives about photo-takers. Art should not be reserved for the elite or the in-the-know people; an increase in numbers isn't just about selfies its about people coming together and sharing artistic or creative experiences that they otherwise would not have had. I am also fed up of missing shows I would've liked to have gone because of the lack of photos online about it so I don't hear about it in time! That is how our world works now, we don't have time or money to peruse the newspaper art sections about high-brow Art World exhibitions. Instead, we vote with our feet and attend radical or contemporary spins on art that challenge the usually inaccessible art world and the typical faces within that elite.
    Furthermore, what about the people who take photos not to post on social media, but to capture and remember their experience to look back on? Why is that form never mentioned? Making sure you experience an exhibit, gallery or installation immediately as you enter the space - it's mood, context and meanings - then taking a photo to remember that feeling is completely different than just looking at everything through the screen and posting it on social media without that initial immersion. I literally could not care less about likes and who sees things - I don't even post anymore - I just use instagram as a tool for inspiration from lovely people around the world with different stories to tell than my own. I purely just take photos to remember moments in my life and travels and experiences that i particularly enjoyed or gained inspiration from or made me think in a different way, and sometimes upload a few for my friends and family across the world to let them know that i'm ok. If social media is really about human connection, then the big media corporations need to change their business model of suggesting my high school bullies and people nearby that I have chosen not to befriend on purpose, and instead realise the value in bringing together strangers from all over for collaboration and inspiration.

When a young child sees art as cool, her world opens up and one never knows what that means for the future. Kudos, my generation! All is not lost!
