Thanks for this video! I know Lick Observatory and Mt. Hamilton VERY well since I drove up there many times over the years when I lived in San Jose for almost 60 years. It is a GREAT place to visit. I even went to James Lick High School in East San Jose (Class of 1971). A HORRIFIC fire several years ago threatened the observatory but miraculously, it was saved thanks to the heroic efforts of the firefighters. The last I heard, LO is now open only on weekends and the fire burnt so much of the lovely greenery in the LO and Mt. Hamilton area. Quite sad to see now. Weekends have more car and motorcycle traffic along with cyclists on the narrow and VERY winding Route 130 from San Jose to LO and so watch how you drive when going up there. And if anyone has any motion sickness issues, then take your medicine BEFORE the drive up there with all the hairpin turns. A Kansas friend of mine threw up in my car because he did not think he would have motion sickness issues and so I speak from experience on this. Make sure your vehicle is in top shape and you have a FULL tank of gas. Finally, if you have time, head east from Mt. Hamilton into the lovely San Antonio Valley. The road will eventually take you north into Livermore or you can head east at "The Junction" which will take you to Frank Raines Regional Park and then Interstate 5 and Patterson in the Central Valley. Happy Traveling! 😎
nice one, im going there tomorrow, just me n my dlsr. wake up @ 6am and head there straight. my first time, its going to be cool. since i live here in san jose. itll be 36mins away..
In the city of San Francisco James Lick left a few blocks of ground to be used for public purposes there, and the rent amounts to so much, that out of it will be built the largest telescope in the world, large public baths and other public buildings, and various costly works. If, instead of these few blocks, the whole value of the land upon which the city is built had accrued to San Francisco what could she not do? H. George 1885.
