Hey👋🏼 Just got the Sony 5100 pretty cheap! It has the same sensor as a6400. I paired it with Zeiss 24 f1.8, Voigtlande 15 f4.5 and the new Sony 28-60mm. All super compact and pocketable. So far I am really happy with the results!
The Nikon D200. An old Nikon DSLR from 2005 with a 10MP CCD APS-C sensor. Capable with decades worth of Nikon manual focus and autofocus F-mount lenses. It still takes great pictures.
I neither like those fully articulating screens ! If I was to get an APSC Camera, then it would be the A6600 which have IBIS and long battery life, but I do hope for a soon future Sony A7000 Camera with improved IBIS, 40 megapixel sensor and 5.8+ mega dots EVF. Now I use my Sony A7RIV and A7RIVA, those are two Cameras-in-one-Camera, because in full frame you have 61 megapixels, but in APSC mode you have 26 megapixels. Last week I was on a one day trip to a large Swedish City, I had my two Cameras each mounted with one Lens, the Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8 (31.5mm in APSC mode) and the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8, so virtually four Lenses and it worked great. Next time I go for a nature hike, I will also bring my two Cameras, the Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8, the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical and the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5 which is a great trio of Lenses and it will virtually be six Lenses if I also use the Camera in APSC mode. In this fall Sony will announce the Sony A7cR with 61 megapixel, I hope that the EVF will be at least 5.8 mega dots, best will be 9.5 mega dots EVF. camerasize.com/compact/#831,858,826,ha,f
I've been shooting Olympus for years now. Back in January I traded in my E-M1 mk2 and E-M5 mk2 for a new OM-1. I missed the little E-M5 so much I bought another one on eBay for £249, the same price I got for my old one on trade in but the new one came with a battery grip and 2 batteries. The E-M5 mk2 is a real giant killer. I use it as much as the OM-1 and of course it takes all the Olympus lenses that I already had. Don't think I'll ever sell it
lumix g80 or gx8 are great alternatives to the hyped fuji systems atm. combined with a nice lil f1.7 prime(s) of your choice and you get out with insane images sooc , in an incredibly small footprint, for about 75-80% of the price of what you'd pay for a similar fuji system.
The prices are unbeatable, but, I did find the smaller sensor a little too limiting in some situations. I think I don't want anything smaller than APSC for shooting in the dark now. I want to be able to shoot at around 6400 ISO. The Sony kinda barely managed, but the M43 just could not. But as far as value for money hard to beat the Lumix.
I had an a6400. Great camera. Only got rid of it bc I wanted to buy the a7c (also a great camera). My current travel/ edc camera is the Canon m6 mk ii. Awesome little camera. When paired with the 22mm f2 pancake lens, it is the most inconspicuous mirrorless camera you can buy. And it is incredibly capable. Only has 2 drawbacks. It does not do well in the dark. Files become unusable. Secondly, if you want an evf, you have to buy a connectable evf that Canon sells. Otherwise the LCD screen is the only option.
I wonder why you feel your GX9 isn't as good? After years shooting with high end Nikons, I now only use m43 and I'm so happy with this setup. I might rent something else when I go Northern Lights hunting, because I'll want fast(-ish) shutter speeds in low light, but for everything else, it's about as good as I need.
I have 2 small cameras aSony RX 100 IV and the Fuji XS10. I absolutely embrace your perspective on small cameras and have over 50 years. as an enthusiast. The Sony fits in a pocket and the Fuji on a strap or very small bag. I always have a camera with me. I can be a human and not just a photographer.
I just moved from the GX85 to an Olympus E-M5 Mark III, and I’ve been loving it. It keeps the size and weight advantages of a small micro four thirds body, but with much better autofocus and (for me) a superior control layout. And Olympus weather sealing is good enough that I never have to worry about water or dust. One nice surprise has been the little hot shoe flash that came with the camera. It’s a fraction of the size of even the smallest speedlight, but unlike a pop-up flash it’s fully articulating, so I can bounce it. That makes it actually quite useable, since I can avoid that nasty, harsh direct flash look.
I am using Fuji X-E1 with xf 35mm f1.4 lens which is about 50mm equivalent.. I think it’s a great combo for an amateur like me. But I wish to take more intimate photos which needs atleast a 23mm lens. I was planning to get a x100v, but It's getting pricey.. Now I wish to have a 23mm,,may be the viltrox one.. My very favorite carry-everywhere / street camera is the Olympus OMD E-M10 Mark II with a Zuiko 17mm f1.8. The two control dials and buttons just fall in the right places for my fingers. Small and light, tilt screen, good evf and IQ as good as any other camera I have tried.
Its why I'm considering a Ricoh GRIII, not sure I can live with one focal length but man travelling with camera gear sucks, especially when you barely use it.
My travel setup needs to be light and versatile. Panasonic GX9 - 450g 12-60mm - 210g 45-150mm - 200g 20mm 1.7 - 100g 42.5mm 1.7 - 130g 1090g total, run around with the zooms during the day, only take primes during the night, or even only the 20mm, its so flat, its pocketable
I still use my old and trusty Lumix G85(I have a GX85 too which I take if I don't think the weather will be a problem..but that weatherproofing has come in handy more than once!), along with a small zoom, 14-140mm or the 12-35 f2.8, and a couple of primes. For traveling I feel a zoom is the best option, and M43 zoom lenses are really good quality and you can't beat the small size!
Small camera's are the best! Sony A6400 is an amazing machine with very accurate autofocus, maybe the best in the APS-C segment. I just really don't like the lenses, because of the size and weight. I mostly use the X100V, I also have the X-T3 with the 35mm 1.4. Both great small set-ups. I shoot in JPG with custom made film simulations like Kodachrome 64. I only shoot RAW when I do professional portraits. I just like the fun factor of small camera's. I Had the Lumix GX85 in the past with the 17mm which was also a nice experience. I think you will love the X100V when you will get one in your hands finally, otherwise you will also enjoy a small set-up like the X-T3/X-E4 with a 23mm F2.
Hi, very well put. You are so right. Having a camera most of the time is more important than occasionally carrying one. Secondly, pictures coming out of four to five years old cameras are not much different than the latest and greatest. Lastly, the point you made I think it was from your other video; lens play a very important role in a photograph, in most cases more than a camera.
I swear by and love using my Xpro2. I usually have the 18-55 kit lens attached. But recently i have fallen in love with my X100F again. I love the results and love using them. I'm an enthusiastic amateur street and travel photographer. I have a trip to New York coming up. Ten days of me and those two cameras. I can't wait.
Really interesting video and I can only agree. I've captured some really really special moments with my compact setup. Not only the very important family photos, but street and travel as well. I think I could easily manage with a older version, but i had some luck and got it before the hype. Mine is one of the cameras you talk about, the Fujifilm X100V. After over 2 years it still far from outgrowing it. As of late I've been using the leaf shutter with a small off camera flash unit.
I've got my Fuji XE1. I've got two manual focus lenses for it, both ttartisan - a 17mm f1.4 and a 50mm f1.2. The whole setup cost $200. It's little. The 16MP is perfect for almost everything. I shoot jpeg only because the jpegs are beautiful and then I have almost no editing to do. Since I'm focusing manually the slow autofocus is irrelevant. I do wish it had coloured peaking though - only white. This design is about 10 years old or so, but of course the photographs are beautiful. Image quality really plateaud in about 2010. Since then the substantial improvements have been to convenience and video.
"Image quality really plateaud in about 2010." you are so right. Perhaps there's been a tiny bit more dynamic range in some cameras, but nothing dramatic. I think I had that Fuji at one stage! Great setup and amazing how cheap yet potent it is. Haha.
I use an A7R III for work and it's a really compact body but the lenses are huge. I use a Fujifilm X-T3 as my travel camera and couldn't be happier. Along with being aesthetically pleasing, the lenses are smaller, files are smaller since the megapixels are less, I use the dual card slot to capture in RAW and in JPEG so I can use the film simulations on the camera if I want something quick to post to social media, and it's just a fun camera to shoot with.

Can you believe me if I tell you that I’m still using a Panasonic LUMIX GX85 paired with the Leica 25mm F1.4 and oh man I love that set up more than enough for me.
GX9 with the 14mm lens is the camera and lens I use for like 95% of my photography. Being able to put it in any pocket is what enables my photography in the first place. Sadly for about a year or so, the built in flash is broken. and I haven't send it for repair. And next week the festival is coming up again - so I will only be doing photos during the daytime. I havent considered an external flash yet. To get a but more interesting, I have a collection of really small c-mount lenses that were made for 16mm moving picture. And some kd them have really unique qualities to them. Plus they also fit in my other pocket just fine.
Hi Mitchell, Great video again, I'd love to see more from you! 🙂 For the past few years I have been working on my own small&light setup. I keep going from Sony A7III to Canon M50, which I both adore. But they keep being too big for a pocket. Somehow I never ended up with M43, it feels like too big a compromise on image quality for not enough size/weight decrease from canon M50. Lately I got a Nikon 1 series camera for a good price, that should be pocketable(321gr inc lens, when 10mm (28mm equivalent, 10x6x4.5 cm inc lens) is attached. One inch sensor though, so only useable for outdoor snapshots when I really want to be conscious of weight and/or size. No bokeh or low light application I suspect, for those times I will just keep bringing the A7III. The A7 III can actually be quite small and light when paired with the right lenses in my opinion. I really love the combo with the Samyang/Rokinon 45 1.8, which comes in at 812gr. Also the 75mm 1.8 (880gr camera+lens) produces really nice pictures in my view. Both also quite small, especially for FF.
When going to places where the conditions are rugged eg. mountain hiking, I will bring along my Pentax-70 with 16-50 or 55-300. And if I am in the city/urban area I use Fujifilm X-t20 with any of my voigtlander lenses 10, 21,35 or 50mm. =
Going to Morocco soon and contemplating to bring either the nikon z50 (aps-c) or the nikon z7ii (FF) or both. Somehow deep inside my heart I'm leaning towards the smaller, friendlier, fun-er nikon z50 which I'm sure my family will enjoy.
I still using my a6000 and whenever I can justify carrying it I will bring my 5dii, there is something that feels so good about its build and ergonomics, although I have a love/hate relation with its size. Tbh whenever any of these cameras die I don't plan to upgrade much. I'll be happy buying another of the same or maybe go up a generation, which still be ancient technology but for me it would feel so newer😂
I love the images captured on my a6500 with the Sigma 56mm F1.4 DCDN lens. It’s sharp and colour rendition is good! Pair it with the new Sony APSC lens E15mm F1.4 it really beats the Sigma 16mm F1.4 DCDN lens.
I think the ZV-E10 is a super underrated camera, especially for the price. What a powerful and compact machine. I’m debating to get that or the Ricoh GRiii.
I love my ricoh griii although it will get destroyed in dusty locations within a minute. It's like those kinder chocolate eggs where each image can be a pleasant surprise after you review the pictures. It's what keeps me shooting it and it makes me warm and fuzzy ❤.
Sorry dude about your camera. Sucks eggs. I had someone break into my apt and stole all of my camera gear, including my father's camera that I inherited. I feel you pain.
I have an A6400 which I have used extensively for birding/wildlife (70-350 G) as well as nighttime sky and landscape use (Sigma 16 and 30 f1.4) as well as a full frame SONY rig and at the end of the day some of my favorite (best?) photos have been captured/produced on that A6400. It’s still a very viable camera and I think will continue to be for quite some time ahead.
My travel kit is the Sony A6600 with 10-18mm f4, 16-70mm f4, and 30mm f1.4 Sigma. A very small package that gives me a range of 15mm - 105mm (FF equiv) with excellent image quality. Though I may exchange the 16-70mm for the 18-135mm for a little extra reach.
I recently got a Fujifilm XE2 with the 27mm pancake lens. I’m still learning how to use it, but the size and weight lets me take it everywhere. So much easier than grabbing one of my Nikon cameras.
I'm very happy with my Fuji X-T30... also small and light, APS-C, and mirrorless. the 18-55 "kit" zoom is quite food, and an excellent walking-around lens. As often as not, I take along my ultra-wide zoom and tele zoom, and end up not using them. Thanks for this video, and all the others!

I recently re- fell in love with my a6500 and now grab it as my camera of choice over my a7iii and a7C. I love using it with my Tamron 70-300 full frame lens. That combo certainly surprised me!
I have for a long long looong time used an A6000. Moved to Nikon Z7 II, but am missing the tiny size of the A6000. Now you mention both A7C and A6500, where you seem to prefer the APS-C body. I am curious about this, as I have been eyeing the A7C to get back to a smaller body.
@@martinfriberg4083 The a7C is a great camera and I don't think that I have used my a7iii since I bought it as it just fits my style of shooting better. Saying that , having picked up my a6500 again ( and actually bought a couple of new Sigma lenses for it!) I realized that it really still is a fine camera and a lot of fun to use. . The biggest downside of it for me is the smaller battery but now I own four of them between my a6500 and my original a6000 so I guess that I can cope with always carrying spares. I like the grip on the a6500 much more than the a7C but must admit I will be interested to see what the a7C ii has in store for us. If they offer a better viewfinder and fix a few other annoying thing about it, I could be tempted.
@@martinfriberg4083 I just want to add to my earlier reply that the a6500 was and is a huge step up from the a6000. The earlier camera seems like a toy ( in regards to its build) by comparison although it still takes great photos. I like to put a 20mm pancake prime lens on it and use it in monochrome as a street photography camera - nice and discreet!
I remember when you used the Panasonic Gx85 and I still enjoy mine but I travel on a pension and no one pays me for my photos! I hope you get a replacement soon.
Fuji F-ed up with the X-100V, arguably the most hottest “niche” camera since release, EVERYBODY is saying the same thing… they can’t get it. That may have increased the desirability a little, but overal it is just a missed opportunity. How many many have finally given up on getting one and by the time they can, they will buy something else new instead, not a Fuji, or the Fuji used. Judging by the general availability of Fuji cameras - with the same X-trans 4 sensor - it is hard to believe it is parts availability. They are just not making enough of them. It might be a way to sell their system cameras like the X-Pro and X-E series in order to sell more lenses. Whatever reason, it is a marketing fail.
awesome videos, glad I stumbled across your page. I am currently undecided between an a7ii and the a6400. I really like the size of the a6400 as I love to travel but most pictures I take will be of landscapes mostly. I also live in the prairies and would like to take landscape photos of the big wide open plains and occasionally the mountains as its a days drive for me. My question is have you ever used crop lens on a full frame camera just for travel so the camera setup is smaller? I was thinking of the a7ii for full frame to capture the wide open landscape shots and some astrophotography but the compact size of the a6400 looks so enticing. In your opinion would I even see much difference in picture quality from these landscape shots as I am an amateur photographer for sure. good job on all the videos!
Hi Mitchell. Over 2 years ago I moved from Lumix GX8 to Sony A6600 because I wasn't happy with the focussing. Now much better. I use the Sony 16-55 f/2.8 and 70-350 f/4.5-6.3. As I am older I don't want to carry heavy gear, and this set up suits me. I find the camera comfortable to hold. The main issue is the low light capability.
Hi Mitchell, I've been following you for a while but going to start paying closer attention. I realize that your message is one of the best out there! Following the light, looking for those visual cues, making art for art sake within the exciting backdrop of a new country is what we both have in common! Thank you for your message and keep on making great videos! On the side of gear, before seeing this I purchased a used A7iii with the 28 mil you mentioned specifically for travel. I love my Fuji x-t30 mark ii so much, but it's getting harder to get the shots due to a couple of factors, one being that as I age, the viewfinder is getting tough to see through. I almost picked up the a6400 but for the viewfinder, I settled for the not-so-unobtrusive a7iii. We'll see how it goes but would love your thoughts. Thanks.
quick update in case anyone else is in a similar boat. I sent the A7iii packing. It was overkill and heavy by the time I added the lenses. Back to the x-t30ii and spending time with it to see if I can make it work. I'm also going to attempt to configure the LCD and viewfinder a little better to accommodate the vision issues I'm having with these smaller bodies. Shooting from the screen as often as possible for street photography, especially. Also, Fuji colors are simply too amazing.

Thank you, yeh, that's where I think I can be different from others. I don't "review" the camera as such, I share my experience actually using it and show the images. It's one thing to hear how something might be in theory and another to see a real life situation.

I’ve got more keepers while travelling with a Fuji x-t20 and the 18-55 lens than with full frames. Have just upgraded the Fuji 18-55 to the sigma 18-50 for some better iq. I know exactly what you mean by using small cameras and travelling light.
I’m also using xt20 and xf1855 but I bought myself xf70300 and Samyang 12 so it’s not as small anymore. Still I can fit my lenses in the pockets of the jacket
i have the a6300. several years later i picked up the a7r3 and never looked back. the evf alone made it worth it for me. that, and a slightly bigger camera is more comfortable for me to hold. since i still have a few aps-c lenses, i've considered the a6700 because? better evf and bigger battery. tyvm for the vid.
I moved from a6400 to xt3 and never regretted it. Sony rendering isn't up to my taste and send me to editing limbo. I love to shoot, don't like the editing process that much. With Fuji, it's just easier. Also Fuji lens rendering is UpTo my taste than Sony's. I don't use big expensive lenses, just uses the tiny 27, 35 1.4, and fujicrons.
@mitchellkphotos Well, C1 isn't as convenient as LR in term of organizing. I'd prefer they just go bayer sensor as I don't know why Fuji is still holding to X-trans in apsc, even though no one is complaining about bayer in GFX. I think people just want drama.
I have quite a few cameras and with a few health issues I didn't want the weight of an A7iii and 28-75mm 2.8 for interrailing. The A6400 with a Sigma 18-50mm 2.8, Sony 11mm 1.8, Sony 35mm 1.8 OSS and Samyang 75mm 1.8 came with me instead. The 11mm and the 35mm would be my daily setup and the 18-50mm if I wanted to just keep it simple. Amazing results for exactly the same reasons you gave. I've since had to trade in the camera for a more capable video one as more work is coming my way (a Panasonic S5). But I do have the A7C and 28-200mm 2.8-5.6 for big trips or I just bought a cheap A7 that I'll use with the Sony 40mm 2.5 and Samyang 24mm 2.8 (so the same fov primes you had). Sure the old battery and old AF won't be nearly as good as the A7C but as i use the A7C for work too I don't want it always out and about.
Nikon D750 with Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2.0 pancake is my favorite combo. Manual focusing is not a problem for me. I find those lenses you presented too big to be appealing.
I'm so happy to hear your favorite is the a 6400! It is mine, too. I'm sorry to hear about yours being stolen. I just returned from Africa where my purse, money, credit cards and new iPhone were stolen. I bought a Sony rx100 mark iv for the trip so I wouldn't have to change lenses and now plan to sell it. It's bigger and bulkier than the a6400. I use a Sony 50mm1.8 and an 18-135mm. Those two seem to cover all my needs for portrait and travel. I may need to take a look at a 16mm now. I have read the reviews on the a6700 and found that it's nothing I need. The a 6400 fits my needs and my purse just fine!

Hi Mitchell, most interesting video about older cameras! I think I saw a video of yours a few years ago now when you had used the Sony A6500, but you did not talk very much about it in the video. How did it compare to the Sony A6400 Mitchelle? I bought the Sony A6000 several years ago and have used it for travel photography as it is light. I have also bought the Sony A7iii as you and several other great photographers use it as well. I have several of your courses with great content in them and have learnt a great deal from you. Would you think of replacing the Sony A6400 with the new Sony A6700 instead? Or would you consider a new Sony A7Cii when it may be released possibly this year as it is FF as a light travel camera? I've been travelling with my Fuji X-Pro2 and X100s for years now. They've never let me down and the image quality is beyond what I need. Using them has become 2nd nature now so I'm never fiddling with anything. I've never felt compelled to upgrade them. I'm glad that I've found something that works for me and I don't have to keep searching for the right camera. I've just added the 16mm f/2 to my kit and shot almost exclusively with it on a recent 3 week trip to Asia.
Thank you for the review of the camera I chose for myself a couple of years ago. It's encouraging to see what it is capable of in the hands of an infinitely better photographer than me. Now, where do I get those lenses??
Wonderful photos and some great advice. Latest isn’t necessarily what you need to get the best results! I find for travel small lenses are key. If I want to go really light (and small- volume is often even more important) I take an action camera and a Sony rx1007. Very happy with the results! Always liked the Sony 6300 and 6400 as a sweet spot for small and great AF, but have never purchased.
I had the Sony a6000 for many years, and it sat inside a backpack for almost as many years. I’ll give it to you on auto-focus, that’s actually why I bought the camera. The auto-focus was outstanding. But everything else about the camera was kind of uninspiring. Foward to today and I find that a similarly-sized Fuji with an APSC sensor makes me want to pick it up all the time, and the auto-focus isn’t nearly as good. So I guess the most important feature of a camera is your desire to pick it up and use it.

Very inspiring and honest video, whereas most TH-camrs always going with new gear and explaining why the latest Leica is incredible and quitting Sony for Red is the best choice … you choose to speak honestly about the subject, knowing you’re not just a “TH-camr” but also a great photographer and documentarist.
I have the X100V and the WCL-X100ii, and it's my favourite camera. I mostly use 23mm, but when I get into tighter rooms I'll slap on the WCL for the 18mm. I rarely bring out my XT-30ii, only for videos during my kids birthdays and events. I sold my XT-4 because much like you, I didn't like the articulating screen, but the XT5 didn't come out in time. However, given the very little use of my XT30ii, I might just stick with it indefinitely. I won't get rid of it yet because I have a collection of prime and zoom lenses that I still want to play with. But the X100V + iPhone is still my go to camera setup.
I was in Greece, taking my a7rii, 90mm 2.8, 24-70 f4 and 35mm 2.8, but also Panasonic GX7 with 14mm 2.5, 25mm 1.7 as additional. I must say it was fun! I feel like I want some telephoto lens for this camera and take it everywhere! :)
A very interesting video. I really love the colour of the video and the photos. I am a beginner photographer who has done a lot of research and thought about different setups for different reasons. I feel validated by this video. For travel, small light and cheap. Second hand and treated as almost disposable (because of theft). It always comes down to the education. I bought a Nikon d700. So far I take still photos and I enjoy manual focus. If I was traveling I would want to be able to take some video and so have also looked into mirrorless. I saw a G7 recommendation the other day. Well I am not travelling but I enjoy the mental stimulation and looking at camera gear but gear is for people who still have to learn how to take pleasing photographs.
A long time sleeping and dslr user I started using the NEX5 as a convenient EDC and have switched to the A6100 & 6400 using Sigmas 16mm 1.4 and newer 18-50mm 2.8. Still use my dslrs for nature and macro. Your approach is practical and realistic.
Very curious to hear if you have a camera setup that you consider GREAT, but that might surprise most of us. 🙂

If I was to get an APSC Camera, then it would be the A6600 which have IBIS and long battery life, but I do hope for a soon future Sony A7000 Camera with improved IBIS, 40 megapixel sensor and 5.8+ mega dots EVF. Now I use my Sony A7RIV and A7RIVA, those are two Cameras-in-one-Camera, because in full frame you have 61 megapixels, but in APSC mode you have 26 megapixels. Last week I was on a one day trip to a large Swedish City, I had my two Cameras each mounted with one Lens, the Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8 (31.5mm in APSC mode) and the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8, so virtually four Lenses and it worked great. Next time I go for a nature hike, I will also bring my two Cameras, the Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8, the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical and the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5 which is a great trio of Lenses and it will virtually be six Lenses if I also use the Camera in APSC mode. I've been shooting Olympus for years now. Back in January I traded in my E-M1 mk2 and E-M5 mk2 for a new OM-1. I missed the little E-M5 so much I bought another one on eBay for £249, the same price I got for my old one on trade in but the new one came with a battery grip and 2 batteries. The E-M5 mk2 is a real giant killer. I use it as much as the OM-1 and of course it takes all the Olympus lenses that I already had. Don't think I'll ever sell it
have you tried the setup sony a7CR+ sony 35mm?
These days I use the Canon M200 with the 22mm f2 and the 15-45mm kit lens. Its very light and compact.
lumix g80 or gx8 are great alternatives to the hyped fuji systems atm. combined with a nice lil f1.7 prime(s) of your choice and you get out with insane images sooc , in an incredibly small footprint, for about 75-80% of the price of what you'd pay for a similar fuji system.
The prices are unbeatable, but, I did find the smaller sensor a little too limiting in some situations. I think I don't want anything smaller than APSC for shooting in the dark now. I want to be able to shoot at around 6400 ISO. The Sony kinda barely managed, but the M43 just could not. But as far as value for money hard to beat the Lumix.
an incredible and small kit is the Fuji XT5 and the 35mmf2, that's also a carry everywhere camera but with stunning results

I had an a6400. Great camera. Only got rid of it bc I wanted to buy the a7c (also a great camera). My current travel/ edc camera is the Canon m6 mk ii. Awesome little camera. When paired with the 22mm f2 pancake lens, it is the most inconspicuous mirrorless camera you can buy. And it is incredibly capable. Only has 2 drawbacks. It does not do well in the dark. Files become unusable. Secondly, if you want an evf, you have to buy a connectable evf that Canon sells. Otherwise the LCD screen is the only option.
I travel with a Panasonic GX9 with a 14-140 and a 25mm 1.7 lens. I keep the zoom on, and for indoor, switch out for the 25mm
I wonder why you feel your GX9 isn't as good? After years shooting with high end Nikons, I now only use m43 and I'm so happy with this setup. I might rent something else when I go Northern Lights hunting, because I'll want fast(-ish) shutter speeds in low light, but for everything else, it's about as good as I need.

I have 2 small cameras aSony RX 100 IV and the Fuji XS10. I absolutely embrace your perspective on small cameras and have over 50 years. as an enthusiast. The Sony fits in a pocket and the Fuji on a strap or very small bag. I always have a camera with me. I can be a human and not just a photographer.
I just moved from the GX85 to an Olympus E-M5 Mark III, and I’ve been loving it. It keeps the size and weight advantages of a small micro four thirds body, but with much better autofocus and (for me) a superior control layout. And Olympus weather sealing is good enough that I never have to worry about water or dust.
One nice surprise has been the little hot shoe flash that came with the camera. It’s a fraction of the size of even the smallest speedlight, but unlike a pop-up flash it’s fully articulating, so I can bounce it. That makes it actually quite useable, since I can avoid that nasty, harsh direct flash look.
I am using Fuji X-E1 with xf 35mm f1.4 lens which is about 50mm equivalent.. I think it’s a great combo for an amateur like me. But I wish to take more intimate photos which needs atleast a 23mm lens.
I was planning to get a x100v, but It's getting pricey..
Now I wish to have a 23mm,,may be the viltrox one..

My setup is a Olympus em5iii with Panasonic pancake14mm and 20mm lenses.
My very favorite carry-everywhere / street camera is the Olympus OMD E-M10 Mark II with a Zuiko 17mm f1.8. The two control dials and buttons just fall in the right places for my fingers. Small and light, tilt screen, good evf and IQ as good as any other camera I have tried.

Its why I'm considering a Ricoh GRIII, not sure I can live with one focal length but man travelling with camera gear sucks, especially when you barely use it.

1090g total, run around with the zooms during the day, only take primes during the night, or even only the 20mm, its so flat, its pocketable
I still use my old and trusty Lumix G85(I have a GX85 too which I take if I don't think the weather will be a problem..but that weatherproofing has come in handy more than once!), along with a small zoom, 14-140mm or the 12-35 f2.8, and a couple of primes. For traveling I feel a zoom is the best option, and M43 zoom lenses are really good quality and you can't beat the small size!
Small camera's are the best! Sony A6400 is an amazing machine with very accurate autofocus, maybe the best in the APS-C segment. I just really don't like the lenses, because of the size and weight. I mostly use the X100V, I also have the X-T3 with the 35mm 1.4. Both great small set-ups. I shoot in JPG with custom made film simulations like Kodachrome 64. I only shoot RAW when I do professional portraits. I just like the fun factor of small camera's. I Had the Lumix GX85 in the past with the 17mm which was also a nice experience.
I think you will love the X100V when you will get one in your hands finally, otherwise you will also enjoy a small set-up like the X-T3/X-E4 with a 23mm F2.
I'll probably get the next iteration of that at some stage, probably more likely to get my hands on that anyway. haha.
Hi, very well put. You are so right. Having a camera most of the time is more important than occasionally carrying one. Secondly, pictures coming out of four to five years old cameras are not much different than the latest and greatest. Lastly, the point you made I think it was from your other video; lens play a very important role in a photograph, in most cases more than a camera.
The 6400 is on my list for a long time now. I hope I can afford it by Christmas
I swear by and love using my Xpro2. I usually have the 18-55 kit lens attached. But recently i have fallen in love with my X100F again. I love the results and love using them. I'm an enthusiastic amateur street and travel photographer. I have a trip to New York coming up. Ten days of me and those two cameras. I can't wait.
Really interesting video and I can only agree. I've captured some really really special moments with my compact setup. Not only the very important family photos, but street and travel as well. I think I could easily manage with a older version, but i had some luck and got it before the hype.
Mine is one of the cameras you talk about, the Fujifilm X100V. After over 2 years it still far from outgrowing it. As of late I've been using the leaf shutter with a small off camera flash unit.
I've got my Fuji XE1. I've got two manual focus lenses for it, both ttartisan - a 17mm f1.4 and a 50mm f1.2. The whole setup cost $200. It's little. The 16MP is perfect for almost everything. I shoot jpeg only because the jpegs are beautiful and then I have almost no editing to do. Since I'm focusing manually the slow autofocus is irrelevant. I do wish it had coloured peaking though - only white. This design is about 10 years old or so, but of course the photographs are beautiful. Image quality really plateaud in about 2010. Since then the substantial improvements have been to convenience and video.

I use an A7R III for work and it's a really compact body but the lenses are huge. I use a Fujifilm X-T3 as my travel camera and couldn't be happier. Along with being aesthetically pleasing, the lenses are smaller, files are smaller since the megapixels are less, I use the dual card slot to capture in RAW and in JPEG so I can use the film simulations on the camera if I want something quick to post to social media, and it's just a fun camera to shoot with.

Can you believe me if I tell you that I’m still using a Panasonic LUMIX GX85 paired with the Leica 25mm F1.4 and oh man I love that set up more than enough for me.
GX9 with the 14mm lens is the camera and lens I use for like 95% of my photography. Being able to put it in any pocket is what enables my photography in the first place.
Sadly for about a year or so, the built in flash is broken. and I haven't send it for repair. And next week the festival is coming up again - so I will only be doing photos during the daytime. I havent considered an external flash yet.
To get a but more interesting, I have a collection of really small c-mount lenses that were made for 16mm moving picture. And some kd them have really unique qualities to them. Plus they also fit in my other pocket just fine.
I do it the other way around. Sony a1 with APS-C 16-55 and 70-350. When my arms give out, I use the Leica D-Lux 7 or Fuji X100V.

For the past few years I have been working on my own small&light setup. I keep going from Sony A7III to Canon M50, which I both adore. But they keep being too big for a pocket. Somehow I never ended up with M43, it feels like too big a compromise on image quality for not enough size/weight decrease from canon M50.
Lately I got a Nikon 1 series camera for a good price, that should be pocketable(321gr inc lens, when 10mm (28mm equivalent, 10x6x4.5 cm inc lens) is attached. One inch sensor though, so only useable for outdoor snapshots when I really want to be conscious of weight and/or size. No bokeh or low light application I suspect, for those times I will just keep bringing the A7III.
The A7 III can actually be quite small and light when paired with the right lenses in my opinion. I really love the combo with the Samyang/Rokinon 45 1.8, which comes in at 812gr. Also the 75mm 1.8 (880gr camera+lens) produces really nice pictures in my view. Both also quite small, especially for FF.
When going to places where the conditions are rugged eg. mountain hiking, I will bring along my Pentax-70 with 16-50 or 55-300. And if I am in the city/urban area I use Fujifilm X-t20 with any of my voigtlander lenses 10, 21,35 or 50mm.

Going to Morocco soon and contemplating to bring either the nikon z50 (aps-c) or the nikon z7ii (FF) or both. Somehow deep inside my heart I'm leaning towards the smaller, friendlier, fun-er nikon z50 which I'm sure my family will enjoy.
Sigma fp is insane if you want to do both photo and video.
I still using my a6000 and whenever I can justify carrying it I will bring my 5dii, there is something that feels so good about its build and ergonomics, although I have a love/hate relation with its size. Tbh whenever any of these cameras die I don't plan to upgrade much. I'll be happy buying another of the same or maybe go up a generation, which still be ancient technology but for me it would feel so newer😂
I love the images captured on my a6500 with the Sigma 56mm F1.4 DCDN lens. It’s sharp and colour rendition is good! Pair it with the new Sony APSC lens E15mm F1.4 it really beats the Sigma 16mm F1.4 DCDN lens.
i use a A7c with sigma 28-70mm, i miss my zv-e10 with sigma 18-50 lens. The weight is really a problem when you need to travel a lot.
I think the ZV-E10 is a super underrated camera, especially for the price. What a powerful and compact machine. I’m debating to get that or the Ricoh GRiii.
I love my ricoh griii although it will get destroyed in dusty locations within a minute. It's like those kinder chocolate eggs where each image can be a pleasant surprise after you review the pictures. It's what keeps me shooting it and it makes me warm and fuzzy ❤.

Another alternantive travel cam I would suggest is the Fuji X70. Small but awesome camera. Takes outstanding images. Highly recommended, too.
I have an A6400 which I have used extensively for birding/wildlife (70-350 G) as well as nighttime sky and landscape use (Sigma 16 and 30 f1.4) as well as a full frame SONY rig and at the end of the day some of my favorite (best?) photos have been captured/produced on that A6400. It’s still a very viable camera and I think will continue to be for quite some time ahead.
My travel kit is the Sony A6600 with 10-18mm f4, 16-70mm f4, and 30mm f1.4 Sigma. A very small package that gives me a range of 15mm - 105mm (FF equiv) with excellent image quality. Though I may exchange the 16-70mm for the 18-135mm for a little extra reach.
I recently got a Fujifilm XE2 with the 27mm pancake lens. I’m still learning how to use it, but the size and weight lets me take it everywhere. So much easier than grabbing one of my Nikon cameras.
I'm very happy with my Fuji X-T30... also small and light, APS-C, and mirrorless. the 18-55 "kit" zoom is quite food, and an excellent walking-around lens. As often as not, I take along my ultra-wide zoom and tele zoom, and end up not using them. Thanks for this video, and all the others!

I recently re- fell in love with my a6500 and now grab it as my camera of choice over my a7iii and a7C. I love using it with my Tamron 70-300 full frame lens. That combo certainly surprised me!
I have for a long long looong time used an A6000. Moved to Nikon Z7 II, but am missing the tiny size of the A6000. Now you mention both A7C and A6500, where you seem to prefer the APS-C body. I am curious about this, as I have been eyeing the A7C to get back to a smaller body.
@@martinfriberg4083 The a7C is a great camera and I don't think that I have used my a7iii since I bought it as it just fits my style of shooting better. Saying that , having picked up my a6500 again ( and actually bought a couple of new Sigma lenses for it!) I realized that it really still is a fine camera and a lot of fun to use. . The biggest downside of it for me is the smaller battery but now I own four of them between my a6500 and my original a6000 so I guess that I can cope with always carrying spares. I like the grip on the a6500 much more than the a7C but must admit I will be interested to see what the a7C ii has in store for us. If they offer a better viewfinder and fix a few other annoying thing about it, I could be tempted.
@@martinfriberg4083 I just want to add to my earlier reply that the a6500 was and is a huge step up from the a6000. The earlier camera seems like a toy ( in regards to its build) by comparison although it still takes great photos. I like to put a 20mm pancake prime lens on it and use it in monochrome as a street photography camera - nice and discreet!
Loved my first camera the a6000 before upgrading to the a6400. A big fan of it as well!

Fuji F-ed up with the X-100V, arguably the most hottest “niche” camera since release, EVERYBODY is saying the same thing… they can’t get it. That may have increased the desirability a little, but overal it is just a missed opportunity. How many many have finally given up on getting one and by the time they can, they will buy something else new instead, not a Fuji, or the Fuji used. Judging by the general availability of Fuji cameras - with the same X-trans 4 sensor - it is hard to believe it is parts availability. They are just not making enough of them. It might be a way to sell their system cameras like the X-Pro and X-E series in order to sell more lenses. Whatever reason, it is a marketing fail.

awesome videos, glad I stumbled across your page. I am currently undecided between an a7ii and the a6400. I really like the size of the a6400 as I love to travel but most pictures I take will be of landscapes mostly. I also live in the prairies and would like to take landscape photos of the big wide open plains and occasionally the mountains as its a days drive for me.
My question is have you ever used crop lens on a full frame camera just for travel so the camera setup is smaller? I was thinking of the a7ii for full frame to capture the wide open landscape shots and some astrophotography but the compact size of the a6400 looks so enticing.
In your opinion would I even see much difference in picture quality from these landscape shots as I am an amateur photographer for sure.

Hi Mitchell. Over 2 years ago I moved from Lumix GX8 to Sony A6600 because I wasn't happy with the focussing. Now much better. I use the Sony 16-55 f/2.8 and 70-350 f/4.5-6.3. As I am older I don't want to carry heavy gear, and this set up suits me. I find the camera comfortable to hold. The main issue is the low light capability.
If you don't want to use faster prime like f1.4 the get tiny flash like flashq q20ii. Learn how to use it to add some life to that low light photo
I'd prefer body with ibis like 6600 6700. Lens wise sony e11 + sigma 18-50 2.8.
Hi Mitchell, I've been following you for a while but going to start paying closer attention. I realize that your message is one of the best out there! Following the light, looking for those visual cues, making art for art sake within the exciting backdrop of a new country is what we both have in common! Thank you for your message and keep on making great videos! On the side of gear, before seeing this I purchased a used A7iii with the 28 mil you mentioned specifically for travel. I love my Fuji x-t30 mark ii so much, but it's getting harder to get the shots due to a couple of factors, one being that as I age, the viewfinder is getting tough to see through. I almost picked up the a6400 but for the viewfinder, I settled for the not-so-unobtrusive a7iii. We'll see how it goes but would love your thoughts. Thanks.
quick update in case anyone else is in a similar boat. I sent the A7iii packing. It was overkill and heavy by the time I added the lenses. Back to the x-t30ii and spending time with it to see if I can make it work. I'm also going to attempt to configure the LCD and viewfinder a little better to accommodate the vision issues I'm having with these smaller bodies. Shooting from the screen as often as possible for street photography, especially. Also, Fuji colors are simply too amazing.

I bounce between the Fuji X-E4 and the Olympus Pen-F coupled with some small lenses. Sometimes I bring my Panasonic LX100 II.

Thank you, yeh, that's where I think I can be different from others. I don't "review" the camera as such, I share my experience actually using it and show the images. It's one thing to hear how something might be in theory and another to see a real life situation.

I’ve got more keepers while travelling with a Fuji x-t20 and the 18-55 lens than with full frames. Have just upgraded the Fuji 18-55 to the sigma 18-50 for some better iq. I know exactly what you mean by using small cameras and travelling light.

i have the a6300. several years later i picked up the a7r3 and never looked back. the evf alone made it worth it for me. that, and a slightly bigger camera is more comfortable for me to hold. since i still have a few aps-c lenses, i've considered the a6700 because? better evf and bigger battery. tyvm for the vid.
Yeh, the bigger battery is definitely great, I just don't like those screens that flip to the side as much.
@@mitchellkphotos the Sony screen only flips to the side as a secondary maneuver. You'd never have to use it. Unless you need to vlog. Check it out.
I moved from a6400 to xt3 and never regretted it. Sony rendering isn't up to my taste and send me to editing limbo. I love to shoot, don't like the editing process that much. With Fuji, it's just easier. Also Fuji lens rendering is UpTo my taste than Sony's. I don't use big expensive lenses, just uses the tiny 27, 35 1.4, and fujicrons.
Depends on where you edit too. Capture One renders it very nicely, but I hear it's even better for Fuji.
@mitchellkphotos Well, C1 isn't as convenient as LR in term of organizing. I'd prefer they just go bayer sensor as I don't know why Fuji is still holding to X-trans in apsc, even though no one is complaining about bayer in GFX. I think people just want drama.
I have quite a few cameras and with a few health issues I didn't want the weight of an A7iii and 28-75mm 2.8 for interrailing. The A6400 with a Sigma 18-50mm 2.8, Sony 11mm 1.8, Sony 35mm 1.8 OSS and Samyang 75mm 1.8 came with me instead. The 11mm and the 35mm would be my daily setup and the 18-50mm if I wanted to just keep it simple. Amazing results for exactly the same reasons you gave. I've since had to trade in the camera for a more capable video one as more work is coming my way (a Panasonic S5). But I do have the A7C and 28-200mm 2.8-5.6 for big trips or I just bought a cheap A7 that I'll use with the Sony 40mm 2.5 and Samyang 24mm 2.8 (so the same fov primes you had). Sure the old battery and old AF won't be nearly as good as the A7C but as i use the A7C for work too I don't want it always out and about.

Nikon D750 with Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2.0 pancake is my favorite combo. Manual focusing is not a problem for me. I find those lenses you presented too big to be appealing.

I just returned from Africa where my purse, money, credit cards and new iPhone were stolen. I bought a Sony rx100 mark iv for the trip so I wouldn't have to change lenses and now plan to sell it. It's bigger and bulkier than the a6400. I use a Sony 50mm1.8 and an 18-135mm. Those two seem to cover all my needs for portrait and travel. I may need to take a look at a 16mm now. I have read the reviews on the a6700 and found that it's nothing I need. The a 6400 fits my needs and my purse just fine!

Hi Mitchell, most interesting video about older cameras! I think I saw a video of yours a few years ago now when you had used the Sony A6500, but you did not talk very much about it in the video. How did it compare to the Sony A6400 Mitchelle?
I bought the Sony A6000 several years ago and have used it for travel photography as it is light. I have also bought the Sony A7iii as you and several other great photographers use it as well. I have several of your courses with great content in them and have learnt a great deal from you. Would you think of replacing the Sony A6400 with the new Sony A6700 instead? Or would you consider a new Sony A7Cii when it may be released possibly this year as it is FF as a light travel camera?

I've been travelling with my Fuji X-Pro2 and X100s for years now. They've never let me down and the image quality is beyond what I need. Using them has become 2nd nature now so I'm never fiddling with anything. I've never felt compelled to upgrade them. I'm glad that I've found something that works for me and I don't have to keep searching for the right camera. I've just added the 16mm f/2 to my kit and shot almost exclusively with it on a recent 3 week trip to Asia.
Injured my back and bought the A6000 and loved it then I bought the A6400 because the body was more rugged I even put it on my 500mm lens
Thank you for the review of the camera I chose for myself a couple of years ago. It's encouraging to see what it is capable of in the hands of an infinitely better photographer than me. Now, where do I get those lenses??
Wonderful photos and some great advice. Latest isn’t necessarily what you need to get the best results! I find for travel small lenses are key. If I want to go really light (and small- volume is often even more important) I take an action camera and a Sony rx1007. Very happy with the results! Always liked the Sony 6300 and 6400 as a sweet spot for small and great AF, but have never purchased.
I had the Sony a6000 for many years, and it sat inside a backpack for almost as many years. I’ll give it to you on auto-focus, that’s actually why I bought the camera. The auto-focus was outstanding. But everything else about the camera was kind of uninspiring. Foward to today and I find that a similarly-sized Fuji with an APSC sensor makes me want to pick it up all the time, and the auto-focus isn’t nearly as good. So I guess the most important feature of a camera is your desire to pick it up and use it.

Very inspiring and honest video, whereas most TH-camrs always going with new gear and explaining why the latest Leica is incredible and quitting Sony for Red is the best choice … you choose to speak honestly about the subject, knowing you’re not just a “TH-camr” but also a great photographer and documentarist.
I have the X100V and the WCL-X100ii, and it's my favourite camera. I mostly use 23mm, but when I get into tighter rooms I'll slap on the WCL for the 18mm. I rarely bring out my XT-30ii, only for videos during my kids birthdays and events. I sold my XT-4 because much like you, I didn't like the articulating screen, but the XT5 didn't come out in time. However, given the very little use of my XT30ii, I might just stick with it indefinitely. I won't get rid of it yet because I have a collection of prime and zoom lenses that I still want to play with. But the X100V + iPhone is still my go to camera setup.

I was in Greece, taking my a7rii, 90mm 2.8, 24-70 f4 and 35mm 2.8, but also Panasonic GX7 with 14mm 2.5, 25mm 1.7 as additional. I must say it was fun! I feel like I want some telephoto lens for this camera and take it everywhere! :)
A very interesting video. I really love the colour of the video and the photos. I am a beginner photographer who has done a lot of research and thought about different setups for different reasons. I feel validated by this video. For travel, small light and cheap. Second hand and treated as almost disposable (because of theft). It always comes down to the education. I bought a Nikon d700. So far I take still photos and I enjoy manual focus. If I was traveling I would want to be able to take some video and so have also looked into mirrorless. I saw a G7 recommendation the other day. Well I am not travelling but I enjoy the mental stimulation and looking at camera gear but gear is for people who still have to learn how to take pleasing photographs.
A long time sleeping and dslr user I started using the NEX5 as a convenient EDC and have switched to the A6100 & 6400 using Sigmas 16mm 1.4 and newer 18-50mm 2.8. Still use my dslrs for nature and macro. Your approach is practical and realistic.
Ricoh GRD is 8.1 mp but it’s so pocketable and takes awesome pics. It’s my edc

U might want to try the ZV-E1 with any Sony compact G lenses... its small but fullframe with fast focusing, it might suits your style of shooting :)
