      @@mitchellkphotos seriuously, making a 35mm (which most photographers define "boring") look as immersive and "fun" as a 28mm proves that what's behind the camera is what really counts. Hats off.

      @mitchellkphotos I'd rather shoot 28 or 50. 35 is absolutely "meh" to me. But as it's been said your stuff rocks bro... which really has more to do with your skill than the glass. Cheers.

    Watching this somehow reminds me on the forgotten world without smartphones. With real interaction between people who aren't hiding behind screens. While sitting in grey autumn Germany, where everything seems to be about money, politics or digital entertainment, it kind of made me sad and happy at the same time. My dad was a travel photographer in the 1960ies, he said the friendliest people he met in the poorest countries, children without shoes but always smiling. Your video reminds me that this world still exists, at least to some extend.
    Thanks!

    The great thing about the 35mm rather than the zoom is you have to work a little harder and compose your photo. Use it for about 90% of my photos, I find it gives me a sense of freedom not worrying about which lens to use and just taking photos.
    Thanks for sharing your ideas they are always thought provoking. Maybe the membership idea could work, I would consider joining if it happens.

    I bought one today because of your previous video, I was thinking of getting the 20-70 F4, looking to get better with my 35mm. I currently have 55mm 1.8, that lens is so good for portraits. I think this will be my everyday lens.

    I'm pretty sure this is the first video of yours that I've watched. The first thing I did after watching this vid was give it a like and a subscribe. I truly enjoy your shooting style. Your images capture the feeling of what it's like to be there. I'm glad that you concentrate on photographing the emotions of your subects rather than concentrating on the rule of thirds, framing the subject, or whatever rule a technical photographer might harp on. Honestly it took me several minutes of looking at your photos to even notice that you threw some of the photography rules out the window. You seem to understand that the most important rule of taking images is finding the joy in the moment rather than some rule that so many photographers seem to insist that we observe. Thank you for sharing, and I intend to watch more of your work.

    Hi Mitch. Good to see you out and about again.
    I travelled for 7 weeks in the UK last Christmas with just my Sony a7 and 28mm f2 Sony lens. There were only a couple of times I wished I had a longer lens, and I took some photos that will remain among my most cherished for the rest of my life.
    I also have a 35mm and am thinking about getting a 50 just to change things up, but the 28 is a super lens. One of the best purchases I ever made.
    I keep toying with upgrading the body, but that’s a way off for my budget. 🤣
    Safe travels.

    Nice to see your enthusiasm returning. You had a tough run there for awhile. Look forward to seeing the video work, The BTS of the Andalusia project was outstanding.
    As far as memberships go, I'm sure it will offer good value as your other resources have. As with anything, it would come down to structure and expense. There's a lot of competition out there but surely worth consideration. Carry on. 👍🥂

    • @mitchellkphotos
      @mitchellkphotos  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeh, I think it won't have direct competition because there's nothing like it, I'd basically be updating it every other week, so it would be like a HUGE knowledge base with everything I know about travel photography. Most membership sites of that sort take a while to release things. I can only think of Skillshare doing regular uploads, but they are not only photogrpaphy, some of the courses are utterly useless to many.

    Mitchell, first of all, your street, environmental and documentary images here are just amazingly beautiful - compositionally, but the colors and light... wow. I am so inspired by this video! In these last 20+ years of street photography primarily, I still always learn so much, so yeah - this was helpful.
    And the timing is spot on. Ironically, I was up for a change of systems and was debating between the Nikon Zf and the Sony A7CII, but opted for the Nikon due to the fact that I had a number of SLR manual lenses to play with.
    I actually enjoy your current format of content and prefer the "a la carte" option of consumption rather than memberships, but certainly would not rule out anything.
    Also, looking forward to your travel videos. I loved the last one you did! Welcome back to your mojo! Love it!

    Good to have you back with this great video, Mitchell! I am curious to watch your travel films of course, but please-please make sure you continue to educate people on photography skills! You stand out as an educator and I think it would be such a waste to spend your time sitting in front of a video editor in your camper. I've seen so many of the great travel videographers disappearing, joining production companies, burning out or going into gear review business. I guess because video is very resource and time demanding, not necessarily a one man show. (Talking of travel/image videos, my absolute favorite is @Brandon Li, make sure to check his short movie 'Morocco Arise', it is amazing) But again, you are natural born photographer, I certainly want to hear more of your thoughts on that :)

    Thank you for your video. First time I have seen your work. Would love to take a trip like yours but appreciate you sharing. I’ve recently added both the A7CII and A7CR to my kit for travel to downsize. On the A7CR I’m trying the new Sony 24-50/2.8 G since I do like shooting at different focal lengths. On my A7CII I’m also using the FE 35/1.8. I’m a big fan of 28, 35, and 40 but the f/1.8 aperture draws me to the 35mm.

    The human eye sees from 15 to 166 mm, while the main angle of concentration for the average person is about 43 mm. That means just between 35 mm and 50 mm. I have a 27 mm Fujinon, on crop censor this equals 42,5 mm for FF, so this is as close as you can get to "how the human eye sees". That you prefer 35 mm might be because you have a normal attention area closer to 35 mm. Other might be closer to 50 mm. So everything between 35-50 mm is within the normal attention area, while the human eye can see in an angle between 15 mm and 166 mm.

    Mitchell, I'm thinking about switching to mirrorless. I like the idea of a smaller camera, but I've always relied on a viewfinder for shooting. This seems like a great camera but the viewfinder is quite small in comparison to the other Sony Full-Frame cameras. Do you find yourself mostly using the flip-out screen?

      @Daniel_Zalman 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mitchellkphotos Yeah, I just wish that the screen on my a7IV was like the one on the A7III. I understand how the way that you can flip it out to the left is good for video, but the way it's done on the a7III is more stealthy. Of the latest, cameras, only the a7r5 gives you that option but it's $3500 and I haven't had the a7IV long enough to sell it, just for resolution, slightly better autofocus, and the rear screen. If photography was my livelyhood, I'd consider it, but, I'm just a hobbiest. Oh well.

    • @Daniel_Zalman
      @Daniel_Zalman 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@hanumanguy Yeah, I think if I could do it over, I would have purchased the a7III rather than the a7IV. Granted the a7IV is a better camera specifications-wise, but sometimes the comfort of how you use a tool is more important than slight improvements in image quality or autofocus (that was already more than sufficient in the a7III). Oh well. You live and your learn. C'est la vie!

    If one prefers prime a 35mm f:1.8 is fine for travel photography. Later he can add one 85mm f:1.8.
    Or a 24 - 70mm f:2.8 is good enough for all categories of travel photography.

    You are one of the "youtubers" or influencers that I have on a list were your talent and quality is in the top best BUT because of that or other reasons you don't create content for social media as often.
    I have found other cases like you and I think like me, were we have the talent but we are not apt for the algorythm, only a few know about you instead of thousands or millions that follow lower talentless influencers or photographers. And yes, I can freely with 100% confidence say there are talentless photographers that are extremely famous, popular even when their work is garbage. Is your lack of posting driven by some mental condition like ADHD? Lack of executive action from the brain? Does it take you everything you have in you to create content and that's why you don't do it often? Or are you just fine with what you have and don't want things outside your current needs and that's why you are just living a good life without wanting or desiring more things? I truly wonder what do you think about this.
    The people on my list of talented people that attempted social media always gets shorter. Most of them simply quit content creation. I guess because they just found jobs that pay well without having to "dance like a monkey" here.
    Now I saw you posted this video after "years". I truly wonder what do you think about creating content for social media. What place this has in your life. Money? Luring clients for other things like mentorship or hiring you as a photographer? Or do you truly expect someday the algorythm will "discover" you? I had held myself from creating a TH-cam channel because quality means nothing to social media algortyhms and the audiences educated and smart enough to distinguish quality or talent or good art are a minority that will almost certainly never find me in an ocean of content.

      Very loaded question. I've been meaning to create mote, but... it's not easy. I think there are some people who are creative and their brain just works differently. We are not good with structure. We're good with spontaneity. Good at adapting. But, routine and structure... it makes me depressed.
      However, I realise that this is needed for any kind of success. I AM also very happy to just enjoy life. Life is so good the way I live it. I just want to continue doing what I do. You can't really put a price tag on that. I make enough not to worry. OF course I'd love more $, it means more freedom. Before the pandemic I was really comfortable financially. Things are still ok, but not amazing financially. Sometimes videos help with that. Sometimes they open up opportunities. But you see, even this video, it has "lens" in the title. I had to do a certain angle for it to get people to watch. If I had it my way, I would not even do this, well, maybe I would every now and then because I love sharing my experiences, but, I am working on makign the kinds of videos that I want, not giving a shit about views, experimenting. We'll see.
      As far as talentless photogs, often they are very good presenters, great personalities. I think it's not only about who's the best photographer. I try to learn from everyone. Anyway, thank you for your comment. It's an interesting question. I think about it often myself. You know, relatively speaking, 67k subscribers might not be much, BUT... compare that to how much a magazine publications gets seen OR exhibitions, things like that, and it's amazing. We're still in amazing times.
      If I can make enough money to keep doing this and just having enough freedom, I can't complain. I am a relatively free person. I get to be with my family everyday. I get to see my daughter grow. I teach her things. It's such a fufulling life. For me, the only purpose of "fame" would be to get more access and to meet more interesting people. Otherwise, I think it's a burden .

      @@mitchellkphotos Thank you for replying and sorry if my english is not good enough, maybe the words I choose sometimes give another meaning to what I write. I didn't get a notification on your reply but decided to come back today to see if someone had commented. I'm glad I did.
      So, basically you do these videos because they truly give some sort of monetary benefit or might bring you opportunities even when they have not that big of a reach yet. Or perhaps you are building something for the future or betting that they will someday go viral or you could sell the concept to a production company or streaming site? I have had this idea as well but this is also a bet that seems so far fectched to me that I never do anything to achieve it. Only ideas written and stored. And partly because when I saw others do similar ideas I see them not thriving or failing and fading which makes me think that perhaps talent or quality is not the key but investment, sufficient amount of money for marketing and rich people connections. Since 2014 I wrote and recorded content similar to the one in your channel, but never posted anything, teras of videos of travels in my country doing street photography and landscapes and such, talking to the camera but never no one seeing what I said. Just sad. Now 10 years later I'm thinking on posting even if I get nothing out from it. That's why I started following you, for inspiration, just as I have followed others for the same reason and to see which ones thrived and which ones didn't. The less telented thrived A LOT. The talented ones faded away or got stuck never growing.
      67k subs are A LOT but I was comparing it to the big influencers that are less talented, less experienced but they got born with charm, charisma, luck, no psychological traumas, no childhood abuse that for one can foster great art but on the other hand can cripple you to the point where only after you die the world might see your art pieces or ideas. Usually people that focus on talent or experience or raising skills don't care about charisma or social skills and struggle with emotions, that's why I think the talented are not good influencers. Even the best photographers in the world have a micro following. Also museums or magazines like you mentioned, they have micro followings but they still make money, in other traditional ways of course. Relationships relationshios relationships, the one thing I hate the most, kissing ass, being a hypocrite.
      I was just wondering how you thought about this because I live in a small town in a developing country where I have no one at my level to talk about these topics to learn and perhaps improve. Now I think I see your perspective and I will add it to my consciousness to see if I can make something good out of it.
      Again, thank you for taking the time to reply. I apreciate it a lot. I consider you one of the best on this platform, on the top 10. Your quality and story telling is just wonderful. I truly wish you recieve somehow all the money you want because I know you would make an amazing use of it.
