Oh Yeah, his Daddy was a drinker, hellraiser, and womanizer in the late 1940s and early 1950s as well as being one of the most influential country artists of his era!
Hi Harri: The man's name you heard was "Jim Beam". It's a brand of Kentucky bourbon whiskey, so he's saying that booze and women both tried to kill him. :) Peace.
Falling off Ajax mountain nearly killed him. Allegedly he fell from one state into another, idk. That's why he wears a beard and tinted glasses. He's had extensive surgery and a glass eye. I don't agree with his politics but I've always loved his music
@@darinhill3773 Yes, I detest his politics, but I'm a southern girl and sometimes you just want to sit back with a Jack & Coke and listen to Hank Williams, Jr. lol
@@kristylopez6869 I could say the same thing about Charlie Daniel's. A good friend of mine, who happens to be a conservative, and I like the same music. He's always said if he chose his music based on politics he would have a very limited catalogue to listen to. I agree
As the standard bearer of his country music icon father, the "country music family" expected Hank to literally stick with his father's brand of country music. Hank did sing his father's songs for a while, but when he started doing his own brand of country - as he wrote in this song, "lately some of my kinfolk, have disowned a few others and me". (In this live performance, Hank slightly changed a few things from the studio version). This was at a time when artists like Hank, Willie, Waylon and others were considered "outlaw" country.
Jim Beam is a bourbon whiskey. Hank Jr. has lived an interesting life he almost died after a fall off a mountain in Montana...that is why he grew a beard and wears sunglasses. The song All In Alabama tells part of that story. Also, the song Old Habits deserves a listen too.
In the bars when the song comes on it’s -Hank, why do you drink? - crowd yells- to get drunk! -Hank, why do you roll smoke? - crowd yells- to get stoned! Lots of fun, lol!
Just love your take on these great artists. I find myself looking for your reaction to all my favorites and smiling along with your genuine enjoyment of them and how quickly you can give us your interpretation and you hear the background vocals, the instrumentation , the production , the vibe of the song and the soul of the singer and their deliverance. Don't fear controversy, or opposing points of view, we all came here for an honest reaction, and getting to enjoy people hearing great music for the first time, something we can never do again ourselves. I always enjoy hearing your take on things
His dad died at 26. He was 3 years old. He started out singing his dad’s songs not long after that. His mom was basically his manager. He was trying to fill his dad’s shoes with different music sounds. He fell off a mountain and almost died. After that, he started doing his own thing. Absolutely great artist. Try out “Mr. Weatherman “ by Hank Jr.
His mother made him! Like a lot they didn’t have a lot of money-but HOW can you make your son dress like his Father, sing all his old hits. That must have been hard on a little boy, losing his Dad & having to relive losing him. Shame.
The song has a dual meaning. He defied the “establishment “ of country music and became a part of a group folks referred to as outlaw country. Singers like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and others. So he broke the family traditions of the country music world. But it also referred to his father Hank Williams, Sr, a legend in country music. In the recorded version of the song, the line was II am very proud of my Daddy’s name, even tho his kind of music and mine are not exactly the same. When he first started out, he sang the same kind of music as his father, because that was what people wanted him to do, but finally he began to do his own kind of music. It was a struggle at first because people wanted another Hank Williams, Sr, but he prevailed and became a huge star in his own right. Thus breaking “the family tradition.”
Yes, Hank Sr WAS a hell raiser, and a very hard drinker, but Hank Sr was in constant pain with a very bad back problem. The alcohol helped with the pain, but it also turned Hank Sr into a very bad drunk, with no shows and bad behavior. This is what Hank Jr is singing about. His father died of heart failure at the age of 29. The whole world mourned, because Hank Williams Sr was the King of Country Music, and greatly beloved, world wide.
It’s a tradition at karaoke when this song is played, when it gets to the following lines: Hank, why do you drink? The bar yells “to get drunk” Hank, why do you roll smoke? The bar yells “to get high” Why must you live out the songs that you wrote? The bar yells “To get laid” So much fun!!!!
Bocephus is my cousin, and he has had a “eventful” life, but he has a heart of Gold. I didn’t get the gene for singing, but we share the personality gene of ‘if you don’t like what you see, I don’t give a damn.” He was born 3 years before me, so I have loved his voice, and everything he is, for my entire life.
"honky tonk" is a dance hall with live music. His dad was an alcoholic & prescription drug addict. Jim Beam is the name brand of whiskey made in Kentucky. People often refer to the drink like it's a person. Hank Williams Jr. almost died when he fell 440 feet down a cliff.
Hank Williams Sr. was an alcoholic who died in his 30's. Many of the greatest singers of the time took Hank Jr. under their wings and taught him to play numerous musical instruments and music styles. Check out: "Man of Steel", "Dinosaur", Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound", and "Born to Boogie". ALL of his songs are great, but this is a startling point.
Also Hank had a mountaineering accident on Axax Mountain in Montana. He fell around 400 feet and barely survived. The beard and sunglasses are to cover the scars. A man’s man.
His friends became actors, and they made a movie about his life, especially after he fell off a mountain and destroyed his face, that's why he's always worn those sunglasses ever since, and it gave him music to write''.
Hank Jr's song is aimed at the Grand Ole Opry traditional singers. They were upset at the time at a few country singers including Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Hank Jr. These singers were stretching the limits of traditional country into the strains of rock 'n roll and blues, and melding the different sounds in a new form of country/blues/rock. And Hank Jr's point was - my father did the same damn thing back in the late '40s. He shot out of nowhere with a new sound that everyone loved. So why are they upset about the new direction the 'outlaw country' singers were going? Ironic that the same folks who idolized his father's sound didn't recognize a new trailblazing when they heard it.
I've read all about his daddy and consider myself a Hank Williams historian... in fact my father's mother was born 12 days before Hank Williams was born!
August 8,1975 he fell 500 feet down the side of a mountain in Montana he was hiking with a friend and the friends son when he fell it crushed his face and broke almost every bone in his body that is why he grew a beard and wears sun glasses
Hank Sr.was 29 when he died from a combination of alcohol & pain killers in the back of a limousine just prior to a show. Jr. Is sentimental about his father but can wax comedic about him as well. The funniest song he ever did (In my humble opion) is "The Ballad of Hank Williams" which is set to the tune of a very old Johhny Horton song, "The Battle of New Orleans". Absolutely hilarious.
This song is brilliant. There was a really good TV movie about Hank Jr. It ends with the song If Heaven Ain't Like Dixie, that songs hysterical too. But for Southerners that makes a lot of sense.
So, his Dad died at the age of 29 of a heart attack in the back of his Cadillac. The coroner said it was from a combination of alcohol, morphine and choral hydrate. Hence, the get drunk and get high reference. Also, in 1975, Hank Jr suffered a near fatal fall of 440 feet while climbing Ajax Peak. That's why you will always see him with a beard, sunglasses and a cowboy hat, to hide the scars from the accident. It's an amazing comeback story for him to not only recover and learn how to talk and sing again, but to also then shoot up to the realm of super stardom.
