Bob Dylan said of this Hank Williams song: "I'd never heard a robin weep, but could imagine it and it made me sad."
Hank Williams did write this song -- reflecting on the tormented feelings toward his first wife. "He imbibes the world around him on a random evening and finds every sight and sound to be a reflection of his own misery."
The instruments embellish the song with a sighing steel guitar and forlorn fiddle.
"Where others might be charmed by birdsong, intrigued by a midnight train, and enchanted by a falling star, Williams only sense sorry, anguish, and desolation." Pure genius. Thank you for reacting to this song.

Hank Williams died at the age of 29 when his son was three years old. He suffered from spina bifida and did a lot of self-medicating to deal with the pain. Although he was considered a country-western singer, he established the basic pattern of popular song for the next five decades. He was inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", the list of classic songs he wrote is lengthy -- "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)", "Move It On Over", "Hey, Good Lookin", "Your Cheatin' Heart", "Lovesick Blues", "Long Gone Lonesome Blues", "I Saw The Light", "Cold, Cold Heart", "Honky Tonk Blues", "A Mansion On The Hill", "Lost Highway", "Honky Tonkin'", "There's a Tear in My Beer" and more.

Audra, Hank’s wife, did her fair share of running around on him too. Which explains a lot of the pain in his songs also. He wrote a vast majority of his songs showing both his physical pain and mental/heart break pain.

I would agree with you about the song, but perhaps for a different reason. My comment to Harri :This commentary is one of your best and very intuitive. I would like to suggest that you also listen to the version by Linda Plowman. I hear the voice of an angel enhancing the brilliant ( in my opinion ) construction of the melody.I find it comforting, not depressing.I don't know why. But I do.The version that I Iisten to was posted by Randall Hamm. Thank you and thank you for all that you do. If my conclusion is incorrect, perhaps I am trying to live in a fantasy world.

Hank did indeed lead a very troubled life. He dealt with major depression when it was not understood. He was exploited by both his mother and first wife. He used alcohol and pills to cope. He was born with a spinal condition that kept him in physical pain. But all that gave the world some wonderful music.

Insightful and almost whimsical, behind the overall bleak surmise of his entire existence to this point and the painfully accurate prophecy, of his own demise.

To me this is the best of Hank Williams Sr. I have felt that lonely before. So I used to sing this song. Hank Williams Sr. had such a hard sad life. The woman he married didn't treat him very well. Plus he had his alcohol problem and it was bad enough that his friends at the Grand Ol' Opry used to have to give him coffee and walk him around to get him sober enough to go out on stage. You really need to dive down the Hank Williams rabbit hole if you really want to understand Country music. His music is the root of the country music tree. He has so many great songs it would take you years to hear them all.

Hank Sr had a fantastic way with words. He was called the Hillbilly Shakespeare because of this. He won a posthumous Pulitzer. Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and more reference him as an influence. His son and grandson_ Hank 3_ have been successful musicians. Now there is a great grandson recording. Not bad for a poor Alabama boy who died at age 29.
You really should listen to all his songs. Some are achingly sad and others are hilarious.

Harri you have a wonderful and insightful ability to analyze and critique music. Very honest and genuine (very much like this song). I’m a classic rock fan first and foremost, born in the mid seventies, so a little later than my ideal time. But have touched on country music here and there though, especially love Johnny Cash. However, earlier this year I watched the most incredible documentary by Ken Burns, The History of Country Music. It was very comprehensive, 8 parts, 2 hours-ish each, but so compelling and flew by. There was a very in depth look at the life of Hank Williams and his impact on country music and music in general. He was an incredibly gifted songwriter, a rare talent, still revered today. After watching I really delved into Hank William’s music and I’m now a true fan. I would highly recommend that documentary to anyone who loves music, country or otherwise.

I believe I watched it on Apple TV, although I think you may be able to find at least some of it on You Tube. It was originally broadcast on PBS, which is the American Public Broadcaster. I’m in Canada though so accessing it was less less straight forward. In England you may be able to take a look at the PBS website as see if it lists availability there. Hope you get a chance to watch it, it is excellent.

Hank had an alternate character called LUKE THE DRIFTER with a song called Pictures From The Other Side of Life and I don't think it was his originally but he took it and talks about awful sad stories ,terrible tragedies about stealing and killing..that one is well worth listening to if you are not familiar with it yet ..

You know that was country music. It was just a genre of music. It wasn't typical American music of 40s. Swing and big band music was popular during that time. Lots of crooners from time such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Dean Martin.

When my older brother & I had to pick a song to play at his funeral we looked at each other & just said no…we knew we’d never make it though it, so we picked Hank Williams song I Saw the Light.

Hank Williams was such a huge star before his early death and his son Hank Jr was so young, it was very hard for him growing up. He was expected to sing his dad’s songs and his father’s fans weren’t shy about telling him he wasn’t doing it right. Hank Jr wrote his own songs and sang them with his own style and had his own fans and career!

Hank wrote songs about what he and his fellow countrymen/women lived. He could distill the crux of their problems into poetry and set it to lovely, plaintive music -- a musical magician. Hank's clearly defined lyrics make his imagery very poignant so as to touch every listener's heart and mind.

Hank Williams was a great country singer and song writer, one of the very best. You picked up from his voice that he was a man in pain, and he was. A man who was in back pain much of the time, and someone who tried to ease his pain emotionally and physically, he was an alcoholic and user of morphine. He died at the age of 29.

The beginning of country was based on the lives of the songwriter. It shows the frailty of the human condition. Sadly, in the popular country we hear now on the radio, that's gone. You gotta go deeper into the Isbells and the Childers or the Simpsons to get closer to that in the present day.
Prine is a prime example of how to buck the institution and play what you feel, as is Kristofferson, Willie, Waylon and I could go on and on. It's out there, you hafta wanna hear it
