Re: Escalade instrument cluster: the servo motors that drive the needles notoriously fail on the GMT800, causing erratic/wrong readings. Also, the trim might be gone when they were trying to replace burned out bulbs (can't without a ton of work on the GMT800s as they're soldered to the circuit board).
I loved my Grand Pix GTP wide track with the big dual overhead valve engine. I was thinking it was a 3.4L engine. For a stock car or was fast and being a wider car it world go around curves at high speeds like it was nothing. It was low to the ground and hugged the road.
Have the same pontiac with 500,000 miles, original motor and trans. Only flaw is sometime it goes into security mode and you have to have the key clicked over and wait 10 minutes for the car to start again when a light stops blinking on the dash.
Maintained, they're decent cars, but they get cheap and aren't maintained. The 3400 is notorious for leaking coolant (I believe from the intake manifold gasket, which is a holdover from the 2.8/3.1/3100 that had the same issue), and is fine if you either fix it or keep the Dexcool coolant topped off, but often times the owners who bought them cheap never even open the hood until something catastrophic happens, which in these engines' case is that it overheats. By the time they notice, the head gasket is blown and the heads warp if they kept driving, making it not worth even repairing. This one he found here with green coolant was probably because the owner noticed it overheating, finally checked the coolant, which was empty, so they went to Walmart and bought the cheapest coolant, and poured it in. Even if the head gasket wasn't blown then, it would have blown eventually with the Dexcool sludge. In any case, it kept overheating and they parked it, which is why it sat like Randy noticed.
Oh, and the Passlock II system is finicky at times as it's a system looking for a resistor that's in the end of the lock cylinder that's activated by the key pushing on a micro switch (remember the chips on the keys of the early 90s GM cars? Same thing, just they moved the resistor from the key to the lock cylinder)... It can be bypassed pretty easily by opening the steering column, finding the Passlock II wires (I believe they're yellow or orange), and measuring the resistance between the wires when the key is in the ignition on position. Then get a resistor (or set a rheostat) with that value, cut the Passkey wires, and put that resistor/rheostat between them on the car side. Viola, no more security. This is basically how you add remote start to these cars as well... But the cut wires run through a relay that the remote start box activates to bypass the Passlock II security. If you search Google for "GM Passlock II", the first result should be Tradecraft Specialties that explains how it works in detail.
I have a grand am with a broken trani and I found a parts car for it I'm 13 and gonna replace a trani in a grand am the one in the video looks exactly like mine I wanna be a mechanic when I'm older so this should be fun also helping my uncle rebuild my grandmas truck engine but yeah he should save that grand am
Re: 90s/00s Pontiac radios: it might work, but to make it all light up red, Delco used an LCD with an incandescent bulb and red filter instead of the usual greenish vacuum fluorescent display. The bulbs often burn out, and are replaceable, but the radio has to be pulled out.
Oh wow a 2000 grand am......I had a 99 grand am SE that I bought with 30k miles after high school......drove it to 150k miles after I paid it off.....I drove it from San Antonio to Indiana 2 times as well.....I put a spoiler from a Corvette on the back....dual exhaust from a GT grand am as well......yes the dash warped the window regulators failed and had to be replaced and lower intake gaskets had to be replaced as well....loved that car.....
It takes time to find the “right” truck from the auction. The ram being newer truck is the more dependable truck. I’m sure the 5.0 coyote I will be fine, but got to cross the t’s and dot the i’s. You will find the right truck Randy!
Don't let people pressure you on getting a new truck it does take time to find the right replacement. I am in the same boat too. I am have a 2014 Chevy Colorado and looking for something bigger for work the Colorado is just fine but I need something bigger. As an avid camper I wanted to get a something to pull i decent size camper so just stuck on what to get but my heart says a one tone Ford but hard to find the one at the price I want to pay and in decent condition too.
I'd LOVE to see the GMC Sierra & the Pontiac Grand Am on the channel! These are the GM cars I like too. Yes quality was questionable in the 2000s, but the last "good" cars made by GM was during Bob Lutz's tenure as CEO.
Pass on the Grand Am, it likely has a blown head gasket, which is common on the 3400 due to notorious intake manifold gasket coolant leaks and owners who never open the hood until something catastrophic happens, which is likely what happened here... Leaked coolant, overheated, owner finally checks it, sees it's low, buys the cheapest coolant (green), pours it in (eventually creating Dexcool sludge), still overheats, got a quote for far more than it's worth, parked it, then donated or let it go. On the other hand, the pre AFM LS engines in the GM trucks are bulletproof, hence the 300k+ on that truck.
Re: GM 3400 V6 in that Grand Am: probably has a blown head gasket. They're notorious for leaking coolant, and the deferred maintenance crowd who tend to be the 2nd/3rd+ owners never check it until it overheats, and only then will they add coolant, which is why it's got green coolant (cheapest they could find at Walmart). Kept overheating, so they're like 🤷, park it, and buy another POS they won't maintain. I changed a 3400 in an Aztek AWD... Had to come out as a unit from below because it's basically impossible to change the rear head gasket in the minivan-chassis vehicles (minivans + Aztek & Rendezvous), so it's cheaper to just get an LKQ engine with a guarantee than replace the head gasket and possibly have other issues.
I had an 01 grand am. Worst car I ever owned, Nothing but problems left and right. I swore off GM ever since. Not saying they make bad vehicles but everyone Iv owned has been a major headache
My thoughts as well... This is nothing but an ok-ish parts car. The engine is basically the early 90s Chrysler minivan V6 with DOHC heads. Not very powerful, it's FWD only, and body parts are going to be hard/expensive to find. The VR4 and Stealth R/T are absolutely worth saving, but not these lesser models.
Not this one... I guarantee it's got a blown head gasket, hence why it began running rough (trying to burn coolant) and gurgling sound (combustion gasses entering the cooling system, finding the highest point, and bubbling).
I used to rent those Pontiacs back in the day when they were new. Fun cars. I remember the radio volume turning down automatically upon deceleration getting off the highway. Quirks and features LOL
That's known as speed compensated volume. It raises the volume at higher speeds and lowers it when you slow down. There's a button on the stereo face labeled "scv" that disables it.
@@LynxStarAuto yeah, especially the 99 to 02 models. The volume knobs in those were prone to turn down when turning up and vice versa. Things got better with the updated stereo in 03. Although every one I've had (several) I always swapped in a basic pioneer unit.
I think you have to do what is best for you. I just love your content and whatever vehicle you bring to your channel is fine for me. Speaking of vehicles, I was hoping you would check out the Buick LeSabre behind the Escalade. i think that would be an ideal car for your channel . A sexy 92 to 95 LeSabre. Enjoy your day.

These 90's Pontiacs have been thrown away and most have the 3800 V-6 reliable, easy to work on. I had a 99 Grand Prix and I loved it!
