This is amazing! I inherited a ton of zinc and porcelain lids with nos rubbers. It's kinda hard to get good info about how to can with them. All the FB groups are gloom and doom about them. I love vintage jars, and now I have more courage to pick them up at sales. Random - I'm also a nurse in Indiana! :-D
This came up on my side bar and I'm so glad it did! I have some old /vintage jars and those rubbers that you used on the zinc lid coffee jars (3 new/old packages!) THis will be fun to try and can with them. Yes we need to be careful but I think sometimes the US thinks they know all!
Hi, I’m from the UK, and I have vintage jars dating back from the late 1930’s to 1980’s. They are various European brands: British - Kilner; Foresters; and the Co-op with glass lids and rubber gaskets. French - La Parfait clip jars (aka wire bail); La Meilleur recently acquired and searching for the wire clip and gaskets to fit. More recently non vintage has included German Weck and Italian Bormioli jars. I have canned successfully with the vintage British ones (which happens to be the majority of my jars as I have be collecting them for years at various boot sales (aka thrift markets) and done a test run with the La Parfait one which incidentally can be used in the pressure canner (I just had a fight to open them because they sealed very well). My real issue is getting hold of more of the gaskets (aka seals), but I have a cunning plan which I may share once I tried it out. I’m even collecting additional glass lids and using them on the modern Kilner regular mouths with gaskets and have used them successfully on them. I was wondering if the La Parfait and or Weck rubber gaskets would fit some of your bail jars, as they do various sizes that just may fit. Enjoyed your video and it is nice to see other people also doing like me and using what they got and or can get hold off to preserve food.
I live in the U.S. , last year a grocery store had Kilner jars and replacement gasket. I stock up on as many as I could afford. They’re expensive on Amazon. One thing I like about Kilner jars is that they use stainless steel. Over the years I have collected many jars from the thrift stores. It has been great!
I’m not sure if they would fit. My favorite place to find the old style rubbers is EBay. People sell them as new old stock. You can search “vintage canning supplies” and find a lot.
I enjoyed this comment and the reply about kilner jars which I am going to now check out. Wonder if any of you have seen on YT her homestead skills and Rosered homestead have both used the rubbers from Tattler and harvest guard with the current tin flats, last time I saw they were still holding at six months. I would definitely try that as I have had more losses with the "re useable" plastic lids after they sealed, than I have re using the used tin lids.

Can you re-use the split tab rubber rings? It would be cool to see you do a canning session with each of the lid styles. Especially the zinc lids with porcelain inserts!
You normally can’t reuse the split-tab rubbers because if they’re sealed properly you have to tear the split to break the seal. I was thinking some videos of each lid style would be good too! Thank you for commenting!

@@YeteastGreen My best tips are: leave plenty of headspace. Put the rubber on dry and try to keep it that way. And tighten the rings down all the way when they come out of the canner.

How do you release the seal on the glass lids with viceroy rubber? I bought quite a few, I'm washing them now, one is sealed empty and I can't figure out how to release the seal. Its a ball and bail jar. What a great job you did with this😉
Thank you! I use a butter knife on the rubber to gently break the seal without breaking the glass lid. If it’s sealed empty, soaking in warm soapy water may help.
hi Rude, i'm a long time canner and i'm really interesed in how you know that the jars with the glass nubs (on the bottom) are OK for pressure canning...were you taught that? or noticed it or did you read it or learn it somewhere? Thanks!
I don’t remember where I learned that! That’s a great question! I don’t have a link for you though unfortunately. I would think Classico says not to PC in them for liability reasons. After all…they must’ve PC’d the jar when they originally canned the sauce right? I can tell you that I have PC’d in used Classico jars MANY times without any issues….but I am a bit of a rebel canner. I use the vintage glass lids. I’m finding them and the jars on Kijiji or in antique stores. The cheapest place I’ve found them are estate sales. The rubber seals, here in Canada, are still sold in Canadian Tire. If you do use the vintage jars, only use them in water bath…lady I bought them from said that the pressure canner is too much for them. Those ‘thicker’ rings, don’t put them in the dishwasher, they will rust.
Hi, I have lots of small jars (one piece) with porcelain inserts. Can this be used to preserve jam or items that does not require water bath or pressure canning? I only saw this when I got home. Otherwise not sure what to use them for
I know this is an older video but can anyone suggest on how to clean the zinc cap lids with the glass liners? I have a few that are vintage but I need to know the best way to clean them TYIA
Watched this video, got on FB marketplace and found a lot of quart sized wire bail jars... 43 with lids and 6 without. All in great condition, paid about $1.50 each. Now I just need to find some seals and some stuff to can in them. Where do you find good deals on food to can ? I figured cranberries would be on sale around this time but seems they're holding out for the winter holidays yet. Also you mentioned some canning groups you are a part of l, could you share where those are? Thank you!!
Facebook…rebel canning group is my favorite. I usually grow most of my own produce, but you can get pretty good deals at Aldi’s and sometimes farmer’s markets. I buy seals on ebay usually. Congrats on the jar find!
Yep loved the alphabet gang term, and the fact you're a nurse with no fear of trying new to us, old things. Thanks for the informative video, and I have only one question on the other glass lids and rubber rings with no split, do you just carefully pry those up with say a butter knife or something to open?
We do use a butter knife to open them, normally once the seal is broken the lid comes right off. Just have be careful to not chip the glass lid or jar. That was a great question. Thank you.
You can grab the tab of the rubber and pull on it with a pair of grips and it will make it just a little thinner and that will let the air in and break the vacuum Just be careful not to damage your glass jar with the grips
@23:10 - It's from Aug 27 2021? And it's already gone bad?? It's only Oct 2022, and youtube shows this video as having been uploaded 8 months ago, which would have been Feb 2022, only 6 months after canning! Why would it have gone bad so fast??
@@rudedogfarms256 - Oh dear! If I ever see any #63 lids, I will keep you in mind! Edit: I just had a peek on eBay; there's lots of vintage ones there... the shipping fees makes it cost prohibitive to where I am (in Canada), but maybe more affordable going to wherever it is that you are?
No, your not being paranoid. Ball works with the FDA and other agencies and Ball is the one who tells them what is safe or not. Your not being paranoid. Companies like Ball make more that 50% of their income if of flat lids.
I dont get why so many people say its not safe, but then they use weck jars that are the exact same concept! Only difference is the mechanism to hold the lid during processing! Weck jars are also NOT usda approved?! Yet people think they are safer for some reason?! I think using logic, not by listening to what the government tells me is safe...

Great.. I would be interesting to find a way to vacuum seal store bought jars.. Used the following methods.. Dennie vac system..jar in vacuum canister quick release method..Commercial chamber vacuum sealer.. it broke the jar.. kindness Lochness Scottish Highlands..
@@neilmunro6683 I’ve done it using a Food Saver brand sealer and a canister.
Can the wire bales be found? I have a few glass lid jars that use the wire bales. They are badly rusted I don’t trust them.
I have seen some of those on eBay as well.
Just found your channel and subscribed!!
Yay! Thank you!
Me too. New subscriber. ❤
forgot to ask about the starbucks/ pizza jars- do you tighten them as much as possible before placing in canner?
Not too tight before putting in. You tighten them down when they come out of the canner.
Hi, I have lots of small jars (one piece) with porcelain inserts. Can this be used to preserve jam or items that does not require water bath or pressure canning? I only saw this when I got home. Otherwise not sure what to use them for
If they’re the ones I’m thinking you mean the zinc lids with porcelain inserts and yes. Those can be used for anything. Don’t forget the rubber rings!
I know this is an older video but can anyone suggest on how to clean the zinc cap lids with the glass liners? I have a few that are vintage but I need to know the best way to clean them TYIA
I used a toothbrush and barkeepers friend.
@@debbie845 Thank you so much. I appreciate the response!!
I handwash in soapy water and use a toothbrush if needed for the nooks and crannies.
Thank you.
You can grab the tab of the rubber and pull on it with a pair of grips and it will make it just a little thinner and that will let the air in and break the vacuum
Just be careful not to damage your glass jar with the grips
@@paulfletcher323 That works for me with Weck Jars, but the Ball #10’s don’t have the tab. 🤷♀️
Mercury oxide is used in the manufacture of polyethylene.
Oh, by the way. Amazon is still selling the one piece canning lids!
I found rubber gaskets on lehman's
@23:10 - It's from Aug 27 2021? And it's already gone bad?? It's only Oct 2022, and youtube shows this video as having been uploaded 8 months ago, which would have been Feb 2022, only 6 months after canning! Why would it have gone bad so fast??
That jar was an experiment. It takes the old #63 lids, and it’s REALLY hard to find a good lid in that size cuz they’re so old.
I just watched another woman that cut rings out of a silicone rolling mat.
@ 25:10 - Jar boobies! Fantastic info!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!
lol! Thank you for commenting!
my question would be how to open the glass lids without chipping them
I slide a butter knife under the rubber ring until it breaks the seal.
you pull the rubber tab and it stretches and breaks the seal.
Is there anyplace you know of that makes and sell new were bales? Bales are all rusty and weak. My mother left me a ton of those type of jars. My wife gave away all my regular type canning jars to a ex girlfriend of mine. The ex girlfriend has passed away and so did my jars.
You might try ebay for wire bales. Otherwise I’d check at flea markets.
