    Every year I ressurrect a few more of the glass lid jars! Just cleaned up 16 pint jars to use over the next week or so. We do between 350 and 450 jars of "stuff" each year and we can all year round! I have to confess I have not used them to pressure can but I am going to try it this year on my kale (bumper crop), I too love the sustainablity aspect of these old jars!
    When I finished cleaning this batch of pint jars I was checking out the dates I ha e some that are dated 1929 in this bunch (I buy these by the box load whenever I can and then store them for clean up when I have time) and I look at a jar that is almost a 100 years old and just wonder what all has been in them! Talk about sustainablity!
    Anyway....great video and Thank you for doing it!

      How exciting. I can year round as well. When something isn't fresh out of the garden, I work on emptying my freezer (meat mostly) Canning saves so much room in there.

      I purchases some new rubber rings for bail jars, but these were to be used just for dry items, like beans and pasta on the kitchen counter, not canning. I did notice if you get the right size, they make reusable silicon rings, which may work better than the rubber ones, which I think may shrink and crack eventually from use. I think the silicon ones might last longer.

    • @moncher2797
      @moncher2797 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don’t use the rubber rings from Canadian tire. They won’t work with American glass lids (Ball, Atlas, Presto) However, if you have the "regular" mouth lids, the small Weck rubber ring will work. Just cut the tab off. Also, the Weck rings don’t like a small headspace. Do a 1/2" headspace & you’ll do fine. Tighten the ring all the way & back off a quarter inch. Tighten the ring when you pull it out of the pot.

I then found several blue boxes containing ball rubbers that I found among my mother's old canning supplies. I now know what to do with these. I'm not sure if I'll actually can in them but they will be perfect for storing my herbs, homemade tomato powder, spices, etc. I know grandma and mom will be smiling down sweetly knowing that I finally put these to use. You need to advise American viewers that the rings available from Canadiian Tire are the "Viceroy" brand & they won’t work on American jars. The Americans need to buy the Weck size small rings for the regular mouth lids. The Weck rings work best with at least a 1’2" headspace. The Tattler wide mouth rings work with the wide mouth lids. Another method (according to Ball 1940’s Blue Book) is to tighten the ring all the way, then turn back a quarter of an inch. Tighten all the way after processing. Thank you for re-filming. Now we can hear you! (Lol).

      Does Viceroy make anything other than the Gem size rubber bands anymore? I recently found a package of wide mouth Viceroy rings at a second hand store. Do the Tattler regular mouth rings not work with glass lids? Oh one more thing did you mean 1/2" head space?

    Nothing wrong with using the old bail(Lighting) type jars as long as you insure the jars, bails and rings are in good shape and clean just like you would with any modern jar. I've used them in waterbath and pressure canning for years and had less problems with them than modern canning jars, and yes I will reuse the rubber rings if still in good shape. Check your bails and ensure they fit tight with a rubber before you get started. Before you put them in the canner put the square shaped wire over the lid, it should fit snug. DO NOT lock the curved ring down. Lock the curved ring down AFTER you take them out of the canner still hot. Let them all cool and rest for a day like you would a modern jar and then unlock the bails the same as you would remove the ring off a modern jar for safety reasons. Lift the jar by the lid to ensure a seal. DO NOT put the bails back on. This is how I do it. You do as you wish and at your own risk. These jars were OK to use for almost a 100 years until industry got the bright idea to make more money with what they say is a "better mouse trap". ????

    • @barbedstar6480
      @barbedstar6480 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can derust with a soak in vinegar and water - 50/50. If yours are rusted, they may be older new style rings for modern canning jars and should be discarded. Older aluminum rings and zinc rings are about 1/8" deeper than modern rings. That 1/8th" allows for the thickness of the glass caps and rubber rings.

    I dont get why so many people say its not safe, but then they use weck jars that are the exact same concept! Only difference is the mechanism to hold the lid during processing! What a great video! I bought some old Crown jars and haven't used them yet because I wasn't quite sure how to do it safely, but now I know. One question though, I know that sometimes there was melted parafin wax used with these older jars. When would that be necessary?

    • @titiaemrich1423
      @titiaemrich1423  ปีที่แล้ว

      its not. wax was used as a replacement to having lids. but not suggested at all for canning. more for preserving jams when you couldn't can...or so I'm told.

    • @williamralph8396
      @williamralph8396 ปีที่แล้ว

      wife's Aunt as well as my Mother did this but only jams and jellies. When settled in the jar there's no bumps of food...usually smooth as it jells regular food ie. carrots are irregular so it has a tendency to mix in rather than stay separate as I was told by my Mom temp of both the wax and food is tricky. Wife says long term storage this way is NOT recomended, however works for any left over jam and you've run out of lids. She would give these to her neighbour to use up quickly, they had more kids than her so the woman always appreciated the extra. Woman's blueberrie jam was amazing ( north Ontario ), she actually still had a jar or 2 that the wife picked the berries for as a kid. It was still good at over 10 years old. When they moved to a smaller house , she found them in the vault of a basement they had. I said I'd give 'em a go. that was over 5 years ago....as we can see I'm still here. To be clear these were not the wax method but glass lid. So late 70' - early 80's when canned, after the wife watched me closely for a few hours we decided they still o.k.!

      They were made for mason jars! Mason jar threads haven’t changed since they were invented. Yes, they work . Just don’t close them like a Tattler (spin the jar technique). According to Ball Blue book (1940’s editions), tighten the ring all the way, then turn back a quarter of an inch. When you pull them from the water, tighten the rings.

    Wish I could have a conversation with you. I have an opportunity to purchase 235 Crowns @ $2. Each, would you suggest this is a good thing or stick with wide mouth Bernardin?

    Anyone have a tip for opening the old style rubber ring jars without wrecking the rubber, it takes so much effort that I worry I’m damaging the ring

    Why would a jar not seal, tried twice now

    • @titiaemrich1423

      I find that problems sealing are due to either bad gaskets, or operator error...in my case if I get to excited and try to take the rings off to early...I'm getting better at my patience.

    Can y'all still buy the rings for these lids? I have about 20-25 glass lids but so far haven't been able to find where to get the rings. I would so love to use them, or learn how to use them in my canning.

    • @titiaemrich1423

      I would probably check out ebay, thrift stores and yard sales. Most of mine came with the rings, I have a LOT of them, so I don't worry about. Let us all know if you find a source.

      @@vivianforsythe9282 Yes there is a wire type not exactly like the Bale and Wire still made, from France there is ARC and Le Parfait and from Italy there is Fido. These have a different wire setup but it's the closest i have seen to the old American style.
