Cocktail: Tom Cruise's 80s Classic Revisited

  • In 1988 Tom Cruise was arguably the biggest star in the world .Top Gun had come out in 1986 and wound up being the top grossing movie of the year. It wasn't only a hit - it was a cultural phenomenon and Cruise became a rare kind of movie star. He was a sex symbol for the ladies but the guys liked him to. Speaking personally, having been born in 1981, I vividly remember owning the VHS tape of Top Gun and playing it on a loop. Cruise was my first concept of a movie star and to kids like me he was like a cool Big Brother type figure. He was the guy we all wanted to be with him riding motorcycles, rocking awesome hair and an attitude which was never too threatening, while blasting awesome 80s rock music and having the girls go crazy for him. He was the man and if any movie ever cemented his big screen stardom it was 1988's Cocktail which starred Cruise as the world's second coolest bartender (after Sam Malone on Cheers of course).
In this episode of Tom Cruise Revisited, which is edited by Jeremy Hamley, and written and edited by me - Chris Bumbray - we take a look at this 1988 cult classic.

Cruise was wearing some very flashy silk shirts in this one. Especially when he’s tending bar in Jamaica. Pair those shirts with some tight, white pants and you’ve got a Tom Cruise hit! Don’t forget to unbutton the top four buttons of the shirt, of course!

We used to work making hard candy at a small candy business in my home city. For a while we were doing Sundays at the small store in the city center only for that to stop and be moved to another store. However a few months after that a sales girl was working there, shop closed and counting the till when there's a knock at the glass and there's Tom Cruise smiling at her. Together with Kate Holmes and a young Suri wanting to buy some candy. Apparently he was super nice and polite and she of course got a photo with them. My bro and I still agree that if we were working that day we would've opened the door and said "Byran Flanagan!" lol

For example there's a part where Tom and Shue were arguing in her apartment and he asks her "why did you ask me here, you wanted me to see where you lived or something" and all she does is look at him and say "Hhmmhuh"....like wtf kinda response was that in the heat of an argument?lol...did they really just write that ? ...not sure what happened there or in some other parts with the dialogue....but I still enjoy this movie and watch it at least once a year...

I think everyone who grew up with this movie wanted to bar tend. Between this and Cheers the 80s was a good time to be a bartender. As Brown says in the movie, "the aristocrat of the working class."

It does have one of the worst lines in all cinema: "Champaign. Perfume going in, sewage coming out"

He's still the biggest star in the world. Except for the Avatar cartoon characters no one else in Hollywood had a bigger hit movie last year or for several years prior. Cocktail is a chick movie and it had its fun moments, but the plot went too dark after what they did to Brian Brown's character, and the segue from that to the rest of the movie is silly. Also, the ending is just too sappy.

We all love Tom Cruise, but Cocktail was an absolute bunch of arse. The only movie I've ever walked out on. I wasn't offended. Unless boredom is offensive.

Is there a more overrated decade than the 80s? Possibly the 90s were more overrated.
Both decades are beloved for some weird reason they had their fair share of awful movies though.
The 70s will forever be the golden era.

This movie is very bad compared to his other works like Top Gun. 3:28 - :30 Makes me think of Danny DeVito's character in Ruthless People. Tom Cruise or not, his character, as a whole, makes no sense unlike the DeVito one.

I cant like this movie on principal. It’s just too shallow, sold on Cruise. Shue was honestly the sweetest bit of this movie and without her the cheesiness of the plot would have been even more un-sellable.
When you contrast a fluff movie like this with say something like in the company of men with eckhart.. he just blows cruise out of every thing he’s ever been in (charm-wise) except maybe rain main.. a personal favorite .
Cruise is an unlike-able personality to me mainly because he plays the same guy in every movie. Same timing, same expressions and same emotional range.
And his straightness is so over-exaggerated like when a teenager cries out boobs because he wants to have it be known he’s cool and straight, that its gay af. His eyes tell the whole story. They are vapid with no desire for what he tries so hard to show desire for. I know this because i know the reflection i see in a womans eyes when they see my desire for them. Theres nothing as such in a woman’s eye playing opposite this closeted gayman.
