sometimes you have to Demo with FD on site.. a structure like that you could never go back inside for a proper overhaul.. so demo the top floor which is already a total loss and you can overhaul from the outside.. maybe even make it safe enough for thos one the next floor or 2 down to occupy and salvage.. but if you didnt demo the FD would be there for much longer tied up or would be called back out as the fire rekindled..
Diz, I heard about this earlier today, and have been waiting to see your post. Bad fire, great job. Great decision by Water Street command to evacuate the building as early as they did. The proof of that is that no one was hurt. That cabbie wasted no time in getting you to the fire. I wonder if my guys from Shrewsbury got called in for station coverage? As far back as I can remember, F&D Truck has been tearing down buildings in the city.
I think they Did get called in, and The Cabbie Was Awesome. They Played this One safe Because everyone was out and No need to get anyone hurt, Thank you The Dizz.

Next time I do replacement windows in Texas, I'll request that ladder truck which does, auto ejection of old windows. Will save me a couple of minutes on my time on job...good work. I love it. BTW, next time I am in Worchester...oops, will never be there.

You seem to enjoy filming the fires, I was wondering if you had ever been on a Fire Department?
I spent several years during the '70s and '80s as a Fire Captain on a very busy volunteer department. This was back when we could still ride the tailboard, that was real fun. Our department ran Medical calls as well as Fire calls. I was heavily involved in the Medical aspect and learned a lot, eventually becoming Medical Officer. Our department was a Fire Protection Disrtrict so whenever I wanted to buy a new piece of Medical equipment the Chief would ask "how much fire will it put out"?
I'm 73 years old now and enjoy looking at the fire videos on TH-cam. The equipment available now is great and the technics are still the old tried and true. I gave my old "New Yorker" to my younger son that was truely a gift of Love.
If you ever get the chance to join a department I'm sure you'd love it. I Never met a firefighter that didn't absolutely love the job. Best wishes, keep up the good work.

Watched alot of your videos and have seen a lot of fires in my life. With all new technology and changes i don't know why they haven't looked at how they attack that type of construction. This is not a critique of this fire but the science behind it. You would think a tool to puncture holes quickly instead of ripping ceilings down. I mean 1 guy putting holes in and one guy then spraying water in the structure. Just going for hot spots. Balloon frame structures are a nitemare. But just putting holes and the lots of water would help and also dampen the dry areas. I would love to hear from any firefighters on this subject

My view as a VFF with just the vid to go on: Looks like the issue was advanced fire in the cockloft. Add good airflow from the soffits and just punching a hole with a cockloft nozzle is not going to flow enough water. Lots of BTU's need LOTS of water. That fire needed a couple smooth bore attack lines (2.5" is my preference but 1.75" might have done the job) at a minimum inside to start knockdown after the ceiling was opened and the seat of the fire was accessible. Lots of manpower, lots of work, not enough time to do it all. Pulling ceiling is one of the most energy intensive tasks and it takes time.
Sounds like they had guys in there pulling ceiling, but the roof or ceiling structure started to collapse before they got to the seat of the fire. At that point, Command made a good call and pulled everyone for an exterior attack with the intention of transitional of conditions improved. Command tried an interior again, but the structure became unsafe, thus the second evac was ordered and just exterior ladder pipe and master streams used.
Remember, risk a lot to save a lot, risk little to save little. In this case there was no life hazard as everyone (except the FF's) was out and accounted for, the structure was already done for, so no good reason for an interior crew once the building structure failed.

Aye diz did they take down the whole building that was on fire, I know it looked unstable on the top floor, but the bottom floors looked like they could have been saved. This fire didn't burn fast enough because they didn't 'ventilate' the roof right away. The fire needs oxygen to really take off, so knocking windows out and cutting a hole in the roof really aids the flames.
