    Hello everyone! Eddie here. Hopefully you found the tips in the video to be helpful.
    If you have any questions or would like me to help craft a search for a particular type of card then just comment on the video. I'll do my best to keep up with feedback and I am sure my fellow Scryfall veterans will chip in as well.
    Best of luck finding those perfect cards!

    A couple other search tricks I like using:
    • lore:[text] will search the name, rules text, and flavor text for the text, useful if you want to find all the cards that mention a character somewhere.
    • date>=[set] will show cards from that set and any sets released after it.
    I haven’t used regular expressions much, but here’s a couple I know about:
    • \d{1,} is a substitute for any number (ex. o:/gain \d{1,} life/ will find every effect that gains you life).
    • \w{1,} is a substitute for any combination of letters without spaces (ex. o:/draw \w{1,} cards/ will return every effect that draws multiple cards).

    • @eddie_cq8276
      @eddie_cq8276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just started using the lore feature myself. I didn't know you could use a set as a criteria for the date function though; that's awesome!
      My favorite RegEx is the super basic fo:/word.*other.*words/ format to search for multiple terms that interest you that may or may not have other content between terms in a particular line of text. Stuff like fo:/when.*enters.*battlefield/ as an example.

      For mana sinks I use something like "(fo:/{[WBURG]}:/ or fo:/{[\d]}:/ or fo:/{[\d][WBURG]}:/)". You can add your CI and should be good to go. But I'm sure there are other/better ways.

    I've been using Scryfall for a few years now, and I must say that it's head and shoulders above Gatherer. One thing that it does that Gatherer only wishes it could do is filter out Vanilla cards. To do so, go to Advanced Search > scroll down to Criteria (after Rarity) > Select Vanilla from the drop down menu > Click the green IS so it turns into a red NOT > then hit "Search with these options". If you're playing Commander (which, let's face it you probably are), you can further filter the search results by selecting "Commander" under Formats. And you can also filter out card types and colours too. Another good trick to know (but probably obvious to most people who know how search engines work) is that both Scryfall and Gatherer are programmed in the way that if you only know part of the card's name, you can enter it and probably still find it on the first page. For example, if you enter "ass hat" into Scryfall or Gatherer, then you will get Lord of Shatterskull Pass, Shatter Assumptions, and Shatterskull Smashing // Shatterskull, the Hammer Pass. Also, congratulations on turning six years old. 😂. But seriously, just typing in part of a card's name is quicker than typing the whole name.

      Is it really? 8 mana, six of which have a color requirement. And both Kurkesh and Golos already needs to be around. The deck would need more than just Golos to justify the slot for Kurkesh. Otherwise the whole thing is just too late game, and too shaky.

    Really cool, i didnt know the full oracle command, so thats nice. Another big one probably is is:permanent (and also -is:permanent/not:permanent) to grab static effects so you don't always have to put in -t:sorcery -t:instant . You also showed parenthesis, but didn't explicitly talk about them, but they are super useful for separating "or" statements from the rest of everything , since or takes everything from the right vs everything from the left if not in parentheses.

    • @eddie_cq8276
      @eddie_cq8276 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is exactly what I recommend to Mitch when he showed me his -t=instant and -t=sorcery method.
      Parentheses are excellent but felt perhaps a bit too in-depth for a video format. Totally recommend using them though! Nested conditions are so useful sometimes.

    I am entirely dependent on Scryfall to build my commander decks. I avoid looking at EDHRec until I'm basically done, just in case I missed something really good, but I haven't been playing nearly long enough to function without Scryfall. And then I do the actual building in TappedOut. Which has a few frustrating limitations but it's still much better than a spreadsheet.

    Just as an FYI, searching "mill" will include all cards before mill was added as a keyword.
    Best search engine, these days I usually only use EDHREC to get the obvious cards that I need, most of the legwork comes from scryfall. Will be using the "fo:" function now, thanks for the tip!

      This is true! Anything errata'd to be mill will appear that way. Magic has so many weird variants that I still like full oracle so you find stuff like Search for Azcanta and Underrealm Lich, which don't technically have "Mill" on them.

    I have always had a hard time finding cards that specify a certain tribe, rather than just being that tribe. Mostly have difficulty looking for cards that say when (some specific creature type) enters the battlefield, do something.

    • @A_G_H_A_N_I_M
      @A_G_H_A_N_I_M 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      so the advanced search is great for this. you wanna specify the phrase on the card you're looking for including that tribe in the “text” box so that scryfall searches the text on the card. ex: "when another merfolk enters the battlefield". you want to purposely leave some of it a little vague so that you can look thru all the options. if you duplicate the text of a card exactly, more often than not scryfall will pull up just that card if there's no strictly better than version. if you were doing the opposite and looking for cards of the tribe like tribal sorcery/instant or creature; you wanna type that into the "type" box. the "o:" search would also work for the text you're looking for but one thing they didnt mention is that you need to "o:" for each individual word when searching that way.
      the type box can be used not only for card types but anything else that would be in that same field on a card. so if we're looking for "shaman equipment" you can type that in “type and it will bring up anything that fits.

    10 yr EDH player here. I haven't built a deck in three years now, I have 18 decks currently. I used gatherer for the most part which has fallen out of fashion. My favorite part of gatherer is the commentary. This would often lead to other suggestions and ways of using the cards. The best example of this is Averice Totem 1 cmc artifact- 5:exchange totem with target non-land permanent. If you pay five and target your worst permanent i.e. kobold you can hold priority and target the best permanet in response. This results with you exchanging the kobold with the best permanent and you keep the totem. Lot's of mana I know and they can't have 5 mana up, but I have controlled many games this way and opps. often won't tap out when they see this, which is a win. Saddly no one comments or uses gatherer anymore.

    • @eddie_cq8276
      @eddie_cq8276 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all a matter of personal preference, but a wide variety of players have found a solid template to be about 10 ramps spells, 10 card advantage spells, 5-10 slots for targeted removal and board wipes, 37-40 lands, and the rest for whatever your core strategy is. Bonus points if you can find cards that fit more than one category! Ex: Sakura-tribe Elder is both ramp as is great in sacrifice and graveyard decks.

Once I'm 90% complete, I pop over to EDHREC to help fill in games and see what I may have missed. I feel like people underestimate how powerful the Gatherer is if you know how to use the proper inputs for it. Though, I do hate stumbling across an awesome card that turns out to be pricey.

      Welcome to the format! I tend to lean heavier into card draw and ramp than some people to increase consistency. I go for about ten of each. For counterspells and other control cards, anywhere from 5-10 is solid. The rest is up to you! Make it your own.
      Here are three searches to get you started chock full of multi-color cards to get the most bang for your buck from Ramos:
      Card Draw: scryfall.com/search?q=c%3E1+fo%3A%2Fdraw.*card%2F&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec

      I like Dalakos a lot. Definitely caught my eye. Seems like he went a bit under the radar but totally could be built cohesively. My only word of caution is to avoid going too many directions. He mentions equipment as well as artifacts plus your callout of wizard tribal is a lot to support in a single deck. I think if you want a stronger deck, you'll still want Sol Ring. However, excluding it for flavor or budget reasons is totally reasonable.

    A lot of these Scryfall specific code searching you guys are talking about, Gatherer already has built into it with no tricks. Example, search when dies in rules text area, undying cards will come up.
    Gatherer advanced search is a lot more user friendly.
    Hope Scryfall is giving you some kickback for advertising for them though :)

    I've been wanting to build a deck with Gurzigost and Grenzo, Dungeon Warden. What kinds of searches or cards would you recommend?

    • @eddie_cq8276
      @eddie_cq8276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, that's an interesting combo. I like that! Well it looks like you'll at minimum be in Jund colors to pull that spice off so if you don't already have a commander picked, you'd likely want one that can enable your graveyard shenanigans or help you find your two combo pieces. Lots of good options to be sure. Lord Windgrace would let you return any lands you may have incidentally milled for additional value. Vaevictis Asmadi the Dire would let you sacrifice useful creatures to reuse their ETB effects. Adun Oakenshield gets you pure style points and, well, Korvold is Korvold.
      For searches, this would be my starting point: "id:GRB fo:/put.*bottom.*library.*any.*order/". This uses that Regular Expressions feature I talked a bit about to find any cards in the Jund color identity that mention the words put, bottom library, any, and order in the full oracle text. Scry effects will be useful of course, and this will let you use Grenzo directly.
      scryfall.com/search?q=id%3AGRB+fo%3A%2Fput.*bottom.*library.*any.*order%2F
      To include Gurzigost, I think you're simply going to want the all start mill effects. A search like this should do the trick: "id:GRB fo:/put.*into.*graveyard/ -fo:/shuffle.*into.*library/" This will find any Jund cards that put cards into your graveyard as part of the effect while ignoring things like the big Eldrazi and Vigor that shuffle themselves into your library.
      scryfall.com/search?q=id%3AGRB+fo%3A%2Fput.*into.*graveyard%2F+-fo%3A%2Fshuffle.*into.*library%2F&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec
