Excellent Joel! I did not know about the “~” and you covered a lot of shortcuts. Some other I’d recommend. - Legal:edh (shorter than typing “commander” ;) ) - Function:removal (returns all cards that function as removal) - art:Gideon (for all those cards for your Gideon deck example) - USD

This is really cool. As a linguist it reminds me of corpus linguistics research. It is a little more complicated but also based on machine readable text corpora and filtering via regular expressions.

Should have mentioned how users can access the Scryfall syntaxes guide so they can find the other search options. I'd also have noted that many terms can be abbreviated. For example, "f:commander" is a more concise way to filter on "cards legal in Commander". "ci:" is slightly more intuitive for filtering on color identity. "cmc" are also powerful ways to filter out spells above/below a certain value. I also like using quotes for strings like o:"counter target spell" so it filters on that exact oracle wording, which can save keystrokes. Of course the list goes on and on... Really good primer though! I've shared it with my group for the novices to check out.
Scryfall should make a link to this video in their tutorial page so we can just like you said in your intro "be a commander builder master". I even bookmarket to keep it at hand if a have a syntax problem in the future

Yo! This was a great Scryfall tutorial. Can't wait to see what we get for Moxfield. Just learning about how to drop in preset packages on stream the other night has been HUGELY helpful.
I just did this with my Doran the siege tower deck allowing me to find cards liked Tower defence and serenity giving my creatures +0/ +5 giving my creatures 2 massive defensive spells at instant speed that you can use with offensively or defensively also found another really good card for Doran call stoneskin which can enchant a creature at flash speed giving a creature +0/+10 and probably has the best flavour text in the game
is there a builder or website for draftbuilds? Cause i wanna start drafting with the latest phyrexia draft booster on friday night magic but i have no idea what to look out or to build and a helper who i can look up before to see ok i have this 1 or 2 card to start what to look next^^
Thanks for the Video, it’s a great Srcyfall tutorial but not what it claims to be at the beginning of the video and the title as well. This video doesn’t explain to me how to look for certain synergies within my commanders play strategy, which basically means look for cards that synergze with my commander. You showed me how to get back on track with my commander deck that I haven’t played in a while how to get very basic synergy with keywords but not that streetwraith is a good inclusion in Anje or Kaldutha Rebirth is good in Goblin Treasure decks. Thats because you need to know what you’re looking for and the video doesn’t show me how to do that (in contrast to what it claims to be, that’s what I criticize here).

@@JakeandJoelareMagic Thank you for answering. Maybe these questions are very hard to get an answer to besides from seeing more cards and recognize them at the right time. Here are some thoughts from me. How do you build a Deck, what’s the progress you’re going through? How do you find the keywords or synergies you’re looking for? Because typing in the name of the commander on EDHREC and finding the 100 most used cards switching out maybe 5 of them for less used or personal preferences isn’t unique deckbuilding (in my opinion obv). I built a control deck with Ephara, God of the Polis and at some point figured out that I could also look for all the Flash cards for Azorius and also all the etb effects on Scryfall because I also had some flickering synergies going on. From that point I started to realize that there were many cards not listed on EDHREC and constantly ask myself how to find these synergies again in my soon to be decks. Especially in the base pillars of a good edh deck (Ramp, Card Advantage, Removal) how do you find good efficient cards that match best with your play style of your deck and when should you switch to the more efficient versions. When to switch out Defile for a Lethal Scheme or a Nature’s Claim for a Caustic Caterpillar etc.
You dont need to remember all of them at once, just get used to a couple of them then ecpand from there. Plus it is pretty intuitive. I hardly ever use the advanced sesrch anymore it's so easy to pull up what i wamt by typing real quick
Ive been preaching scryfall for over 2 years now and its much better than edhrec; advanced searches, way easier to find specific cards and effects, and its not a website where ppl can net deck and copy paste lists…..to me net decking in edh is bs (cedh i can understand cuz it’s basically 100 card version of 60 card formats but not regular edh). Edhrec is too narrow minded imo, leads to samey gameplay and decks, and doesn’t make you work and think for yourself. Edh is about fun, not winning, so to me edhrec is detrimental. No one should just copy the top 50-100 ranked commanders over and over and thats what its at now. Great website but bad for casual edh and ups the amount of power creep and homogeneous decklists

Scryfall never, ever works for me. I’ll use it for something like “art:chair” and it’ll say “nope, no results”. It also says “nope no results” even when I just search for Elesh Norn by name in the bar for it. Scryfall is kinda terrible lol 🤦🏻♂️
This was very cool, but why did you not go over the fact that if you hit advanced search, you can do all of that without having to know these specific ways of typing in the search bar? You can just hit advanced search click on the colors you want and then click on creatures, Instants, etc and find it that way as well. I feel like that way is much simpler but maybe I am wrong. Does anyone agree or am I crazy.
Before Scryfall I have to spent hours in MTG card data looking for cards. EDHREC is okay but it only shows you the cards but never explain why include this card. And most of them does not even synergize with you commander or the whole deck. Scryfall is better because its you who determines the cards you want for your deck not someone else. Just to add on, you forgot to show if cards are legal in commander.
I really like the vids on this channel but the intro music timing is really starting to get to me. I love the intro music but the fact it doesn't fade out after the intro or at least get quieter drives me nuts. And then it randomly stops at some point in the video of no significance at all!
Lol you got it all wrong 😂 your spouse to go research the top decks and copy them and build them that's what magic is about there is 20000 cards but you just need to copy decks and forget that number o and we can't forget all the cheep combos you can look up on TH-cam SMH what happened to createing your own ideas and decks

I always use the buttons in the "advanced search" tab. I see the expressions while I search, but who has the time to memorize and type all that?

i use it so much though, it just saves time to know a few basic ones
Pretty easy for players who use command line on the daily, or players who want to search faster and save time?
I work in IT, and having to type scryfall expressions like regular expressions is such an awesome way of finding the right card for you!

I use moxfield and Spellbook. Works quite well for me.

Do you know how to search for cards that synergize with the new omnath? That means cards with 3 mana symbols in their cost.
Whenever I use the legal in commander search restriction on scryfall it takes out all the arena/online cards automatically

How you use Scryfall is way too complicated. Just use the advanced search so you don’t have to memorize all that command shorts.
