I just sold a version of the red tree, plus, as it was in an art display, a commission to do another one! It has also received many positive comments. Thank You so much Karen, and I love your instruction
According to my Apple Watch, this video got me so excited that my heart rate jumped from 61 to 91! Definitely inspiring- now I can’t wait to attempt to paint a red tree
I highly appreciate that you keep making videos where you use affordable pastel paper. I purchased Pastelmat paper, too, it is fantastic, but it is so precious that i am intimidated to use it. I especially loved that you systematically included spraying the midtone layer in your process.
Thanks for this. I always struggle with tree shapes and getting the right values. Where I live there are lots of yellow gingko and linden trees right now, so I will have a go at that! Thanks for the clear and to the point explanation and demo.
Oh Happy Day!!! Finally a tree that is stunningly beautiful, yet is explained in a way that just gave me the confidence to give it a try without any of the usual inner dialogue that tells me that there is no way I can achieve it. Thank you so much for this rad video. I have a feeling there will be many beautiful autumn trees sprouting up, growing much needed confidence for many, many artists. Well done Karen. Thank you so much. I hope you create many more videos just like this one. Much Love and Respect from North Carolina, Stacy
Even though I don't paint with pastels, I think your 5 steps are so helpful to see explained and demonstrated. I love your art and style and have learned so much from you.
I just ran around my yard in Vermont to snap a few photos this morning, and this demo was just the push I needed to get excited about whipping up some "tree portraits." Thank you Karen, you are such an inspiration!
This was mesmerising to watch and how your work seamlessly came together in a very easy to learn manner. For beginners in pastel painting, what size is recommended to start with? Thank you. Your work is super, super!
Thank you so much for this wonderful and inspiring tutorial, Karen! 🍁 I really look forward to have a go at this! 🍂 What a stunning tree! 🍁 Your technique truly is marvellous! 🎨🙏
Such a beautiful tree. Question: What's a good medium, hardness, pastel? I've got Sennnelier but they're too soft to start a painting. Also have NuPastels. Need something between those. Maybe Rembrandt? Anyone have suggestions?
Lookin at the photo, compared to the finished painting, the photo looks very dull by comparison, but this is fine for artistic license of clurse- I thought as the painting emerged and the tree took on that fantastic glow quality "Nature don't know glow like Karen know glow"
Well, every one of your paintings is more lovely than the last. thanks for sharing.
This is beautiful. I LOVE the bright, bold red against the kind of drab grey/brown backdrop. What a great contrast.

Warmer colors, not lighter, what an eye opener that was, Thak you so much. A BIG aha moment.

@@KarenMargulis I definitely did! It made my day. Thank you 🙏

Very illuminating. Thank you.
This is great and not too difficult!
Ah, just gorgeous Karen… man I’d love to just stroll through your studio💚🧡
You are helping me enormously, love your tutorials. Watching from the UK and I am learning how to use my Rembrandt soft pastels. Thank you Karen!
I learned something new! Now I know why my trees refuse to glow...I was using lighter values instead of warmer and brighter ones! Thank you!!
Glad it helped! It is a game changer for so many things!!

Depth just magically appears in your paintings ❤
Thank you!! I appreciate your comment!
Yup, it's like they just materialize out of a flat 2 d scene. Love seeing the layers emerge and create depth

Such a beautiful tree.
Question: What's a good medium, hardness, pastel? I've got Sennnelier but they're too soft to start a painting. Also have NuPastels. Need something between those. Maybe Rembrandt? Anyone have suggestions?
Thank you! Rembrandts are still on the harder size. My favorite choice would be Terry Ludwig or Unison for a pastel in the middle.
@@KarenMargulis thank you so much. There's a set from Unison I'd like to have.
So beautiful. All this on unsanded Canson. Amazing!
Isn’t there any other workable fixative out there? Does it have to be Blair?
Thank you! I am experimenting with other workable fixatives since Blair is being discontinued. I'll be sharing about my experiments when I finish!
Is rubbing alcohol same as isopropyl? I’m confused by these cemicals used in pastel painting.
Yes that is the same. I use 70% but you can also use the 90%
