This is beautiful! Am I the only one who sees water among the grasses? I want to perch a small bird on one of the long grass stems. Thank you for this lovely inspiration! I'm always amazed how you take an unremarkable photo and turn it into a gorgeous work of art.

That is one area I have not yet explored! I have actually never painted a portrait!
I am just beginning to try chalk pastels. Your teaching and results are super!!! I live in hope that you will sometime paint a scene with a rainbow in it. No one else does!!! Great video. So sad. I had a barely used Terry Ludwig Red Rock set, I loved that was stolen out of my SUV along with over $1000 worth of pastels, Uart and Pastemat papers and wheeled art cart; Unisons, and Nu pastels; a few senneliers too. All irreplaceable as I am a senior on such a limited Canadian pension. Broke my heart.

I like it, I like it pretty big.....I am getting back to being an artist again. I like soft pastels more, oil pastels, not sure if you have tutotrials in that medium

Thank you! I don't use final fixative. I just store my paintings under glassine paper.
Hi Karen. How do you when using a dry underpainting prevent from filling the tooth of the paper too quickly? Have you ever prepared pastel paper with clear gesso to add some tooth. The UArt paper is really expensive and for practice with these exercises would like to have a more affordable alternative. I have Nupastel and medium soft pastels. Thank you for all of your help.

Thanks for watching! Dakota pastels ranks Schminke as the softest pastel with Sennelier coming in at 4th for overall softness.
Hi Karen....yet another great and instructive film. I would like to ask if you use just black foam core for your board or do you cover the black board with black paper? It always looks pristine and mine is so grubby after a couple of paintings.
Thanks! I am currently using a piece of black masonite board sold at hardware stores for chalkboards. It can be washed clean with water.

I am a newbie and seem to make a mess of blocking.
Do you wipe the pastels off each time of moving from one color to next? Just beginning to learn. thank you
Welcome! I usually wipe them when I go from A dark area to a lighter area or when I notice the pastel picked up another color.
I only just started! Only have a set of soft pastels.should I wait to get hard pastels? Or is there something else I can do to try this pai ting?
You can paint with only soft pastels. Just practice using a light touch! Thanks for watching!

How do you keep the paper up?
I make hinges with artist tape and attach on each corner of the paper....sticky side up and then tape this bit down.
yes I freeze or I spend an hour and then toss it :(
