    The Man City Coach was Pep (he was the one who brought Total Football to Man City), he is THE ACTUAL coach of that team in real life. The conversation he had with Ted, is a call back to that Season 1 conversation between Ted and Trent while they are eating dinner.

    Can we take a moment to appreciate what a wall Van Damme was this episode? After him being a bit of a pushover on the field in early seasons, he was an absolute champion in this game. (The show is wonderful about character growth, but sometimes that growth is on the field!)

    I absolutely love Beard and Ted's relationship and this backstory of their friendship fucking destroyed me...i totally get now why Beard is so ride or die for Ted

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It absolutely fills in the gaps. They're such opposites, in terms of Ted being so excessively demonstrative and Beard being so... Beard. But that's also what makes them a perfect comedy duo.

    • @fayesouthall6604
      @fayesouthall6604 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That shows Beards loyalty to Ted. Ted didn’t say to Beard I want him back he showed him a different view of Nate and a story that relates to his own history with Ted. Absolutely brilliant writing.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@fayesouthall6604 Right. And Beard's loyalty clearly was born out of residual guilt, projected onto Nate.
      I think there's a through-line in this whole season about separating who people really are from who we make them in our heads. Beard is fiercely protective of Ted, and now we know why. But because of that, he saw Nate as the guy who betrayed Ted, and not as a guy very much like himself, who made a bad choice because he was going through some shit. Ted reminded him to actually see Nate, not just the betrayal.
      If we condemned everyone who makes bad choices because they're going through their own shit, who would escape the chopping block? Not Beard. Not Jaime. Not even Ted. I imagine Beard has had reason to write Ted off too, and knew not to, because he was granted the gift of forgiveness. So he passes that forward.
      Now I think of it, forgiveness is also a strong through-line in the season. And Ted still has one person to forgive, himself. He's the only person he's hard on. I think he carries a lot of guilt for hating his father.

    Keeley is about 7 years older than Jamie. In one of the earliest episodes in the first series, she said something like “When I was 23, I was dating a 23 year old footballer, now I’m nearly 30 and I’m still dating a 23 year old footballer”

    RE: Colin and Isaac coming to ask Nate back, they also had a redemption story with him, because they were his bullies in season 1. I agree that Nate needs to apologize to Ted, but I think his apology was always destined to be a part of the series climax. His anger at Ted reflects Ted's anger at his own father, so I think Ted passing forgiveness forward will allow him to move past his guilt at hanging onto anger with his dad, which is I think a part of why he neglects his own needs in favor of everyone else's. It will be closure for both of them.

    Pep Guardiola, the actual head coach of Manchester City, made a cameo appearance as himself, which was pretty awesome as he is legendary. Check out the Total Football presentation Beard made a few episodes back where he mentioned Pep.
    Loved your reactions. I enjoyed some parallels in this episode to the season 1 finale. The way that injured Roy left the field a hero without calling attention to himself at that time left Jamie puzzled; now he goes off the field injured and earns the opposing fans’ applause for not celebrating his goal against his former teammates. Also Ted stopping by and looking in at Roy and Keeley laughing with Jamie recalls him looking in and seeing Jamie’s dad berating him in season 1.
    Beard’s forgiveness monologue was so powerful!
    Did you catch the throwaway line in the hotel video of Keeley promoting Manchester by saying “… and the latest sports technology, like yoga mats!” 😂

    There's a lot of references this season, especially this episode, to The Wizard of Oz, i.e. Dottie (Dorothy), mention of Australia (aka Oz), and Brandie Carlile's version of “Home” from the musical “The Wiz” plays during the credits.
    I'm certain that this is a setup for Ted to leave Richmond in the series finale and go back home to Kansas as there's, "no place like home."

      I think the scene with Rebecca and Rupert last episode and that brief bit of Jamie’s dad here are a reminder that even the people who seem to be irredeemable have the same ability to change as anyone else. But for people as bad as those two, distancing yourself from them is still a good idea; you shouldn’t always wait around for someone to change.

    So many great call backs to throw away lines from early in the series.
    Like Mama Lasso saying Ted ate a candy bar that was actually poop, is from a story Ted told in season 1, saying if a kid ever walked up and offers you a candy bar there is a good chance the kid pooped in a candy wrapper.

    The fact that not only the main characters get a complete and satisfying story arch, but so do the secondary and even the tertiary characters get satisfying story arcs is an amazing credit to the writers. Jamies Dad in rehab and looking proud of his son -come on. So beautiful.
    Also, Van Damme's story arc on the field. Perfection.
    I would LOVE Bex and Ms Cakes get West Ham. I want Jamie to date Roy's sister. And although I want Ted and Rebecca to live happily ever after, Ted will most likely go back to Kansas. I hope Rebecca keeps the team.

    When Ted spoke to Pep Guardiola (the Man City coach) after the match, some notice that Pep says something that Ted said in the first season, about beeing the best person on and of the field. I believe, that this is suppose to show, that even the best football manager/coach in the world, has been influenced by Ted Lasso the american football coach, who did not even know anything about football/soccer when he came to England. It shows the growth of Ted Lasso the soccer coach, and how good and honest people, can be a positive influence on other people.

    @34:00 - Understanding wanting a bit more of an apology tour with Nate. I assume his GF actually made the call and started the process of trying to get him back as she orchestrated the rest. And as for the team, he didn't really do anything to them other than tear the sign. It was only the kit boy and Lasso that he was evil to. So, not only have they adopted the Lasso forgiveness model, they didn't have a lot to forgive.
    I also suspect we will find out that Nate quit because he saw what Rupert did to his assistant.

    As of season 1, Keeley was 29 and Jaime was 23. Which means she was 19 and maybe already modeling when he was 13 and first starting to seriously notice girls. So it's quite possible she was his first serious celebrity crush.

      In a weird way, Roy and Keeley were kind of Jaime's parental figures. He was always the junior with both of them. Keeley taught Jaime how to be a proper celebrity and live in that world, and held him accountable when he messed up. Roy always had a fatherly relationship with him, even when he was being a cocky little prick. That's pretty normal between fathers and sons.

    So like most, I do think Ted's news is that he is quitting after the season. However I think is surprised by the news that Michelle and Dr Jacob's weekend in Paris was actually them looking for a place to live in England am they can reunite Henry with his dad. The happy ending is that while Ted was willing to move back to the states to do what's right as a father he gets to do that while staying with the new family and life he has created in England.
    Bonus, he ends up with Rebecca making her a step-mother, and thus all of the psychic's predictions come true.

    Jaime's mom's advice was kinda weak for me. "He will never change".... We all change. We all need time to learn hard lessons. If anything, just know that if he won't change, you can still love him knowing he isn't perfect. Parents share love and pain with their young.
    Also, I love how Beard's story also explained where his hardcore loyalty to Ted comes from. When wify and I first saw this, I noticed that Ted and Beard felt like friends from way back from the jump!!! That is not easy to write. This little story def. explained so much.
    RIP Rupert! lol!! ME2INCOMING

      If you have an emotionally abusive Dad, it's hard to give up the hope that someday they'll give you love you long for. It can be heartbreaking to be disappointed over and over. Jamie 's Mom is encouraging him to see that it's his Dad''s problem, not his.

      @@annunciataparchesi1832 Absolutely. I have a lot of friends who live with this. It nags at your soul, waiting for the apology and closure that'll never come. Even when you know better, that yearning never seems to go away.
      Abuse is different from a parent than from a partner. You can ultimately write off what a partner thinks. But a parent is forever stuck in your head, for better or worse. For me, my dad changed so dramatically that I hardly ever see glimpses of the abusive ass he used to be. And in those moments, the abuse is always directed inward. But you can bet that the dad I grew up with is still in my head, shouting at my struggles instead of helping.

      No, her advice was on point. Most folks don't change, especially at that age, and Jamie hurting wanting his dad to change is causing him pain. So telling Jamie "he won't change" is not only 100% accurate in her viewpoint (or she probably wouldn't have divorced him), it is far better for Jamie to let go of any hope of him being a decent human being so that he can move on.
      If your parent (or anyone else in your life) is a piece of shit, it is far healthier to accept that so you can decide to keep them around as they are without hope they will be better or do the generally more healthy thing and leave them behind.

    Hear me out. Ted Lasso season 4, let Ted be gone back to America. But bring in Dottie Lasso to kind of fill that gap. Let the excuse be she's visiting Beard, and of course comes to see the team. But she stays cause the team asks her too, for the reason that it's like having a part of Ted back with them. And have the following season or 2 be Dottie now being the 1 to heal thanks to the team her son created, while still doing stories for the others.

      I honestly did understand it all along though. It was just a silly reference to when Will had to buy drinks for the older man at the bar in the first episode of The Inbetweeners.

    This seasons really disappointed me. You can tell Bill Lawrence left and now Jason is running the show by himself. The fact that the guys had a conversation about wanting Nate back offscreen, seemingly in between episodes (because we never hear a moment about it in the show before this), is ridiculous. That’s a huge moment not just for Nate but for the guys too. The first two seasons were really well paced, this one has a million ideas they’re trying to cram in. Sometimes we barely focus on one and it comes back episodes later out of nowhere, other times there’s stuff like the Zava storyline or Keely and Jac, where they almost feel like a separate season. Sometimes the threads relate, sometimes they don’t.
    But yeah, the show still has tons of great moments, but it feels more like if they took interesting highlights from a few seasons of a show and tried to connect them all together in one season.
