    Shocking that beautiful old houses like these always seem to have brick features and hardwood floors covered.

    • @michaelmurphy9644
      @michaelmurphy9644 7 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      murraysdreams "Brick features" were never meant to be exposed. For example they removed the original horse hair plaster that was used to hide the chimney. I'm not a purist so it doesn't bother me. But you often see rowhouses with entire brick fire walls exposed, or ceilings removed to expose the floor joists above, when they were never meant to be. That's going too far for me. These guys did a great job. Those floors are to die for!

    • @missyallthat6207
      @missyallthat6207 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      murraysdreams brick was meant to be covered- people started doing this in the 80s for decor. I think it caught on as an easier was to remodel- after damaged was was removed u didn't have to cover it will drywall, baseboards, etc

    • @tyler12ddm
      @tyler12ddm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I mentioned this exact point to my grandparents, and they told me the reason it's all covered is because people put in carpets and drywall and all that other stuff over it because it was seen as luxury and nice to have all that stuff so they covered it up. Now it's popular again to have brick and hardwood floors and everything so people that buy these older homes can sometimes get lucky to have the stuff just covered up.

      This looks great! More like a $300 project if you already own $800 worth of tools, but that hutch thing turned out gorgeous!

    • @missyk2454
      @missyk2454 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I blame the 60s and 70s when carpet really started to come onto the scene in interior design. We know now that hardwood and other ceramic floors are likely more hyperallerginic. It's what I have cause it's easier to maintain than carpet.

    Got pretty worried when I saw you paint the cabinets. I've seen others do it and it turns out poorly almost every time. Your project seemed to make it work. The wood back splash looks incredible and pulls the room together when reflecting upon the original wood floor.

    Looks great! We did the same thing when we bought our 100-year-old house, also here on the NS south shore. Took a lot of fixing up but had good features. Built-in hutches and cabinetry - which we painted white. Ugly shag carpet was removed to reveal the original oak hardwood flooring! We almost cried. They'll need a good sanding/refinishing soon, but they're beautiful. The carpet protected them all these years.

    I’ve done this exact renovation to our 1880’s farmhouse. It was such a painful process; so great job you two!!! Keep it up! If you get tired of the dirt between the floor boards, I found caulking works great. It is able to move with the boards unlike other products. Ultimately I think we sanded our floors too much and overtime the boards have broken so we will be redoing them AGAIN with all new everything next go around.

    This is cool! Glad I found you! We are doing the same thing - renovating a 230 year old farmhouse! Lots of work, discoveries and fun! I love how she's singing "there's a hole in the bucket dear Liza" my husband sings that all the time. LOL

    what is that little square hole for anyway?

    • @WabiSabE
      @WabiSabE  8 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      The little hole by the chimney was a heat vent that would have been right above the fire place in the past. If you wanted more heat up stairs you would open the vent.

      I smiled when I saw the hole for the upstairs heat; have a couple of them in my house as well. Great job as always!!

    We just bought a farm house that was built in 1910. Such a gorgeous home and the precious owners obviously really loved their home because it is in gorgeous condition!
    The WHOLE kitchen is all wood everything and I really want to eventually paint it white just like you did with your built in cabinets but I’m not so sure my husband is going to go for it...
    Might have to do it one day without telling him 🙈

    You guys did a great job! Looks absolutely amazing! Live how it's lightened up with white paint, darker floors, and exposing that brick was another excellent choice! Makes me want your guy's house just for this room alone. Lol!
