  • Solar Eclipse Observance and Teachings
On Monday, April 8, 2024, a solar eclipse will occur in our region, marking a rare and historic event from 11:15 am to 2:43 pm. Diné College will honor its values and mission by prioritizing the well-being of its students, employees, and local communities during the solar eclipse.
In alignment with our Diné teachings, we will observe a period of reverence and stillness to honor the death and rebirth of our Sun (Jóhonaaʼéí). Accordingly, Diné College will cancel classes during the event (11 am-3 pm), and employees will be permitted to pause services and operations until the event concludes. Security and Center Directors will ensure the safety of our campus and centers during the hours of observation to address any concerns or questions that arise.
The School of Diné Studies will provide a pre-recorded presentation before the event occurs to share information on the cultural significance and teachings of observing a solar eclipse through an indigenous lens.
The presentation will aim to educate both our native and non-native college community about the stories, cultural teachings, songs, prayers, and cultural norms associated with honoring a solar eclipse.
Many students and visitors come to Diné College to learn about Navajo culture and the importance of observing events such as this. Cultural teaching is a part of our mission and values. Diné College serves as a home away from home for many of our staff and students. With this in mind, we are committed to sharing our teachings on the solar eclipse with our family.
Tsaile Campus Cafeteria will serve lunch early (box lunches only) to students and employees, and close at 11am-3pm. The cafeteria will return to regular operational hours for dinner following the eclipse (4:30pm).
