Thailand/Cambodia - Leaders meet

Dissident Khmer Rouge rebels on Monday (19/8) had their first meeting with senior officers of the Cambodian armed forces. The renegades expressed concern for their own safety, fearing they might be attacked by hardline guerrillas who want to keep fighting the Cambodian government. The meeting took place at an undisclosed location between the Thai border and the rebel base of Pailin in northwest Cambodia. It was attended by army deputy chiefs of staff Nhek Bunchhay and Pol Saroeun. Among those representing the breakaway Khmer Rouge faction was Sok Pheap, commander of rebel division 450. Nhek Bunchhay later told reporters the talks had been "very friendly, very cordial. We succeeded in getting rid of the word 'enemy' -- that word does not exist anymore."
Nhek Bunchhay said the rebels had asked the government to "demonstrate a clear policy towards Ieng Sary," the former right-hand man of shadowy Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot, who is heading the breakaway faction.
Cambodia's co-premiers, Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Hun Sen, reportedly
disagree on whether Ieng Sary, who was condemned to death in 1979 for crimes against humanity, should be allowed to take a role in politics.
Nhek Bunchhay said the dissidents also discussed a ceasefire, the securing of better access to Thailand from Pailin and Phnom Malai, another rebel base further north, and the setting up of a working group to continue the negotiations. It was the first time senior government officials had met with commanders of the breakaway Khmer Rouge faction.
