    Fun fact, in Monster Hunter canon, your hunter only completes each quest once, so while gameplay-wise you're hunting enough monsters to be classified as a walking mass extinction event, in-universe you're only doing it once each time.

    • @oxybe

      Also it should be noted that the player character hunter is unto themselves a war god. The average meat-and-potatoes hunter does not fight Diablos or Bazelgeuse. They stick to the greater forms of Jagras, Jaggi, Wroggi and the like. There are only a handful of hunters strong or crazy enough to hunt Elders, which is why the old hunter with a hateboner for Teostra or the Admiral who's hunting weapon of choice seems to be "big rock" is a thing to be feared.
      Imagine being Kevin the Rank 2 veteran hunter and seeing some motherfucker drop into town, decked out in the hides of multiple Vaal Hazaaks and sauntering around the base like the horseman of death incarnate on a mission, pop in to the local military supreme commander's office unannounced and unimpeded and telling him he's only here for a minute because there's a Wind God Dragon in the mountains slightly over yonder and his Cat is in desperate need of a new hat because, and I quote "Would be so cuuute with the fwuffy widdle ear hood".

    Fun fact about Monster Hunter World (and Rise): All weapons can be repaired by rubbing them with whetstones (even the blunt ones, like the oversized hammer and the doot-doot-doot horn), except the guns and bow who don't ever wear out from use, and the flora of the world can make all sort of ludicrous projectiles. The Ice Age driving large mammals into extinction is rather unlikely. Mammals in cold biomes typically get larger, both because, the larger you are, the more effectively you can avoid hypothermia (which is referred to as "Bergmann's Rule" if I'm not mistaken) and because a larger body typically comes with living at a slower pace (can't think of the proper term, but I mean stuff like heartrate and rate of breathing) which is more energy efficient and means it takes longer for you to starve.
    In many cases, it was probably *the end* of the ice age that caused the extinction, as large mammals struggled to not overheat and were outcompeted by smaller and more efficient life forms.

    • @laurencefraser
      @laurencefraser 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's actually More important. Most of the energy saved via bipedal motion goes straight into maintaining our honestly kind of ridiculous brains...
      also, without tools, wolves are better persistence hunters than humans in cold climates, while humans do better in hotter climates. This is because, while humans drive their prey to heat exhaustion, wolves instead Bleed their prey. Which is riskier and requires appropriate anatomy (which humans don't really have) but is quite a bit more efficient. Humans, in the absence of tools, use heat exhaustion to render their prey incapable of fighting back, and then effectively Grapple it to death. Wolves bite prey that is still capable of fighting back, in order to both start it bleeding and get it running, with the prey eventually bleeding out.

    • @pirig-gal
      @pirig-gal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@laurencefraser 1 small correction I'd make is that wolves can only do that because of hunting in packs, since attacking an animal that can fight back is very risky, so they need to work together on distracting it for an opportunity attack. Humans in cold climates hunted in a similar fashion. They'd wound the animal from range (with a bow or a slingshot) and just follow it as it runs away and bleeds out.

    fun little fact for people who dont know (I feel like MHGR would enjoy this one) Birds are direct descendants (meaning they evolved directly) From surviving therapod dinosaurs. Heres a little group info "Archosauria (lit. 'ruling reptiles') is a clade of diapsids, with birds and crocodilians as the only living representatives. Archosaurs /ˈɑːrkəˌsɔːr/[2] are broadly classified as reptiles, in the cladistic sense of term which includes birds. Extinct archosaurs include non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and extinct relatives of crocodilians. Modern paleontologists define Archosauria as a crown group that includes the most recent common ancestor of living birds and crocodilians, and all of its descendants. The base of Archosauria splits into two clades: Pseudosuchia, which includes crocodilians and their extinct relatives, and Avemetatarsalia, which includes birds and their extinct relatives (such as non-avian dinosaurs and pterosaurs).[3]" The only reason birds are in this group is due to the fact that they are evolved therapod dinosaurs (which also means they are closest related to crocodilians such as well crocodiles. Which also means they are reptiles) Iv had a lot of people refute this to me but those are mostly people who dont even know velociraptor aren't 6ft tall and aren't covered in scales (they are around 3 feet tall and covered in protofeathers with small non flying wings. Basically for display).

    2:00 My guess as to why the dinosaurs got so big and mamals didn't get quite near sauropod sizes is because of the mammalian heating problem; due to square cube law, Mammals internals get a lot warmer the larger they get; this is why elephants need wrinkled, hairless skin and ear flaps to survive in africa, but lions do just fine with full manes. However, while dinosaurs likely had some homeostasis blood-warming effect, they weren't mammalian, and thus also had some cold-blooded signifiers in their bone marrow. Thus, it seems they were only partly warm-blooded, and could get much larger without overheating as much.

    You were right that the two hypotheses about the megafaunal extinction being hunted to extinction vs environmental but the environmental one is that the deglaciation and global warming is what led to the extinction as the larger animals couldn't navigate the grasslands that became woodlands as the climate became more habitable to larger flora. The general rule is, cold makes animals bigger to preserve body heat via a volume to surface area ratio.

    Those crabs around thermal vents engage in a special form of photosynthesis called chemosynthesis that has special bacteria that live on the animal that take harmful chemicals in the water around them and make it into usable compounds for their bodies

    Another factor that goes into reducing the suffering of hunted animals is that the meat just tastes better. Stress causes the animal to release chemicals into their muscle tissue that completely destroy the flavor. I would be willing to bet that this is the real reason most hunters even care about this, rather than any genuine concern for the well being of the animal.

    Regarding the energy expense with humans. Its true but also know that animals are stupid and humans are not. So humans can just walk behind them. Also we sweat better. And we can throw the best.

    12:10 not entirely true, in terms of this game.
    I'm a bit of a Monster Hunter vet since no.3, and i can comfirm there is one monster that can take a nuke blast like a BB gun (so unclear how it can take a sword or a hammer to kill it).
    In lore, the iconic Brachydios is a huge t-rex stanced monster that weaponises a form of green slimy mold that turns red & explodes upon reaching maturity. But Brachydios & the mold co-exist with each other & the mold doesnt ever reach maturity in the Brachydios' body, and if it were to explode, the Brachydios has a VERY tough shell that can withstand it. This is also how this monster has come to be one of the most tough monsters you can encounter.

    I don't get why people talk about natural vs. unnatural. If humans are part of the animal kingdom anything we do to animals is natural. If we are not... well that brings all sorts of interesting questions. Then there are natural things such as farming, slavery etc. that are all done within the animal kingdom.
