Velvetdrive Reduction Noise

  • Chatter in the reduction gears caused by a damper plate that is too stiff and transfers all piston firings from the Isuzu C240 diesel engine right through the drive line to the 72C reduction gears. Note that it is time with the engine combustions. Will replace damper plate with an R&D polyurethane version which should fix the issue..

I know this is late, but worth mentioning for other viewers who are researching for their own boat.
That lag in shifting to reverse doesn't look right. Check out the Hale Marine YT channel. He videos the run test of every transmission he repairs or rebuilds. Watch some of them to see how quiet a Velvet Drive could and should be, and also note how the output flange normally stops in neutral. If you have an issue with a VD or just about any other marine gearbox, call Chris, he'll help you out.

Could be damping springs loose on the flywheel

so i jusr made a little reserch and find out that this noise is made by a missfire at low rpm, it goes away when the engine its at high rpm ans its kinda normal.

Its normal for the age of this type. It it caused by the gears. Butt it will last a life with this sound of the gears with good maintenance offcourse.

hoi Michael, so this is a normal sound? my velvet makes the same sound by schifting gear. when it makes more rpm the sound goes away.... so this is no problem?

@@jimvandermeulen2463 hoi Jim, nee dit is niet schadelijk, je zou kunnen kijken of je het geluid kan reduceren door eerst de olie te verversen en vervolgens beetje met het toerental te fine-tunen.

Did you ever find out the issue?

I changed the damper plate to the R&D version. Still does it a bit but better and disappears with revs.. The original plate I used was really for a V8 or bigger engine than mine.. Cheers

@@greenhandnz good to know. If mine sounded like that i would just run it till it busted but all the time worried as heck. Would that have ruined the gear? I have an old boat that has a double disc. had it ten years and just thought that it was normal to be so loud. It keeps on a going. i check and change oil. I always thought diesel engines were supposed to sound like they are about to blow up. thanks for the video. shows me how little i know about boats.

Much of the noise will go away with a shaft and a prop in the water.
