  • This video shows how to take nasty, dirty, wax moth infested frames and get clean wax for later use from them still.

Thank you for a terrific video. I have several old frames loaded with wax moth damage and I thought I was destined to buy new frames. Now I know what I can do instead. Thanks!

What are you doing with frames that have plastic foundation?

I would have removed any remaining web and put those damaged frames on my biggest banging hives about a week before the nectar flow and they'd be cleaned and repaired by the bees.

I picked up a few frames used and was wondering if the plastic foundation can be removed so I can soak them in bleach/water mix to clean and sanitize them - the frames that is unless I can clean them with the foundation on them as well.
The person I got them from said his bees died of from starvation during the winter. I am not sure how long they have been sitting. He told me most of them were not bad and could be re-used as is even but I want to clean them. I am trying to have a beekeeper locally look at all the frames and boxes I have to let me know. I am waiting to hear back from 2 fellas.

You are likely to break the wooden frames trying to get the wax out. You can bleach soak the entire frame, wood and plastic, in a bleach water solution to sterilize. If there is wax drawn on them it can be scraped or melted off in a warm water dip like in my video, but only get the water hot enough to melt the wax and no more, you don't want to warp the wax foundation. I personally would just scrape off any wax, soak the whole frames in a warm bleach water solution, thoroughly air dry, then put a few coats of melted wax back on the plastic to coat the entire surface well with a small foam roller. I don't use plastic foundation or I would show you in a video, but there are plenty of other videos out there showing how if you don't already know.

OK thank you I'll give it a try. I may even just buy some new plastic foundation.

Why don't you out them in the freezer for 3 or 4 days?

GR. Hollman putting them in the freezer is to kill the moths only, the damage still needs to be cleaned out. This video is showing how to clean out the damage left behind from previous moth damage.
