    One thing to know with Scout / small of the back carry is that is you ever fall on your back or are thown to your back, you can suffer a catastrophic spinal injury. As a retired Tac medic, I always taught that no gear should be directly over the spine for this reason.

    • @nothingbutknives2286
      @nothingbutknives2286  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a good tip. Generally when we scout carry the knife ends up more to one side than the other just because of belt loop placement, but spinal injury is definitely a good danger to keep in mind when gearing up.

      @@TrilobitesRTasty It's not a legitimate risk. Show me multiple incidents of this happening with a knife in scout carry. You're more likely to crack your head open and get a TBI than to have a catastrophic spine injury.

    I’m a huge fan of horizontal carry for fixed blades.
    Although I don’t buy knives or sheaths as I make my own.
    I actually prefer horizontal scout carry for large field knives for a couple reasons.
    1. Puts the knife in an easily accessible, out of the way spot.
    2. In the field, the strong side position is taken up by a pistol, and having the knife weak side carry just isn’t as easy to get at.
    Great video 👍🏻

      @@nothingbutknives2286 to me, weak side vertical carry is, for the most part one of the most inconvenient field carry methods out there.
      Much like with a D/A automatic knife, (which is absolutely the most useful pocket knife out there) the scout carry is awesome because you can be holding something with your weak hand, be able to get your blade out, do the cutting, and be able to put it back ONE HANDED.
      Try that vertical weak side carry.

    For EDC, the Little Bro is my top pick. For woods, I like the Tom Brown Scout. It is a great general purpose knife, good for bush work or EDC carry.
    I have the Bradford too, and like it, but I hate the sheath for it. I prefer a sheath that lets you get a better grip on the handle, and the Bradford sheath requires the knife to ride tucked way inside. (It does look much better on your model than it does on my waist though!)

    I have carried this way for over 30yrs. Everybody I have seen make the same mistake and so quite carrying scout. The knife must be above the beltline 1 to 2 inches. You can do this with a TekLok belt clip or make your own out of 16 gauge sheet metal. I have done both. It simply works. Mount the sheath to the inside so it is up close to your back. I have been searched several times while carrying a 4" blade with a standard T-Shirt and they didn't notice the knife. This works for me.

    • @nothingbutknives2286

      The Smolt is awesome. Unfortunately, there is no perfect answer to the belt question, because sheath belt loops are not standardized in any way shape or form. We often change our belt to best fit the knife we will be carrying. The most popular belt here at NBK is the 5.11 Tactical 1.5" TDU belt.

      We've only gotten to handle that knife at trade shows, but it feels pretty solid. It seems like something that could do a ton of work for how small and light it is.

    Hey there, I've got a Glock FM81 knife and I've been looking for some sheath to wear it horizontal - are there horizontal sheaths that'd fit such a knife (6.5" blade) at all or do I need to look for something custom?
    Alternatives I think would be forward leaning belt-worn sheath (that blade is a bit too long to wear it vertical, for me anyway) but I'd really like to figure out some horizontal sheath.

    • @nothingbutknives2286
      @nothingbutknives2286  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a tough one because it's such a long blade, but you could try Ka Bar's Cordura sheaths. Pretty sure they make one that fits their 7" models like the USMC Bowie.
      The only other option I think of us besides that is an after market custom maker like Armatus.

    Like the vid!! But how hard is it to put the knives in the sheath when its on your back? Do the sheaths even make a difference to difficulty? How noticeable are they in everyday carry, when driving or working? Might be some good talking points for next time.
