      Dr. Fung (@drjasonfung), i've always wanted to ask how is Ozempic (and similar) drugs any different, in the end result, than fasting? I asked myself this question, then saw your videos and I am now a regular faster. I've done multiple 3 day water fasts and have lost quite a bit of weight and have managed to keep it off.

    Do people ever gain or maintain on it? I have gastroparesis and I gain really easily, despite being bloated and nauseated all the time. Simple carbs are easiest for me to digest and so I just struggle with balance. And I'm not alone. Gastroparesis "gainers" are a lot more common than you'd think. And ozempic is basically just causing gastroparesis, yeah? So is there a subset of people who just don't lose on ozempic, or do they just dial up the dose until they CAN'T eat?

    The drug trial was only about a year. Complications were thyroid cancer and other issues. Now people are having gall bladder issues and pancreatitis. What could go wrong with a drug that slows the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine. Count carbs not calories.

      Every single one of those side effects is listed inside the box. People didn't think it could happen to them.We knew the risks before we used it. I am a Type ll Diabetic.I had nothing to lose and everything to gain by using this drug. Glad I did.

      there is no evidence of thyroid cancer in humans as a result of using ozempic. only in a very small percentage of mice. gall bladder issues like gallstones can happen in any instance of rapid weight loss because of the process of metabolizing existing fat. not remotely unique to ozempic. you need to check your info better.

Even with good discipline it's very difficult not to gain weight over time when permanently hungry. So.... on a similar treatment now. When you are diabetic or pre diabetic nothing helps with weigh loss. Your hormone insulin has pooped out. Which is one reason someone like me doesn't pay for the drug. Second is my bmi which is 32 because even on keto for a year and eating once a day, I lost less than ten pounds. My insulin HORMONE isn't working.
      Wouldn't matter what I try. That's science, it's on paper and my blood panels show I'm in amazing health and eating healthy EXCEPT my hormone pooped out. So it's not really fair to blanket what you blanketed.
      You're very lucky to be able to fast and stay small. Careful because the HORMONE poops out for alot of women in middle age which is why we get fat.
      Just saying.. Research more you will learn more.

At the time all I ate was pizza, garlic bread, french fries and burritos. I changed my deit immediately all I aet was chicken, turkey and red snapper fish. I also got some over the counter medicine from Walgreens called doctor Stephanie's (blood suger 24 hours and carb and sugar blocker) weight loss program. I went back to my doctor's office after four months and my blood sugar levels was 91 my A1C was 5.1 I did not have deibetes. My doctor told me I can eat some wild rice and RYE bread if I want so I added those two to my new deit. This is my success story.

  • @carlnienaber
    @carlnienaber 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

    So what the video is saying is Ozempic is a good thing? My understanding was that it wasn't. I've read that a significant amount of the lost weight was muscle, not only fat, which in my mind would reduce your basal metabolic rate and therefore you'd gain the weight back if you stopped? My understanding from the obesity code was that caloric restriction was not the key, but eating window was the key, because simple caloric restriction reduces your metabolism, where a reduced eating window would not. How does Ozempic affect the metabolism? Would you really recommend it over simple intermittent fasting?
    I find the messaging in this video confusing.

    • @Lorij24
      @Lorij24 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I absolutely agree with you. People are going to be in search of this because they want to lose weight forgetting that it's not weight that matters it's body fat percentage. And so in the search of what people consider health and then taking this drug... All we're doing is hooking ourselves on one more prescription for now and a whole bunch later when our bone density starts to suffer and when falling down and breaking a hip kills us.

    • @carlnienaber
      @carlnienaber 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@Lorij24 Yeah. I'm quite frustrated with this. My mother just got prescribed Ozempic from her doctor. She's 75, has osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and is overweight. The last thing she needs is to lose more muscle and bone density.

    • @chickennerd2085
      @chickennerd2085 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      He didnt say, he recommended this drug. He said in the last minute of the video "there are also many ways that activate the same receptors, the GLP.1"
      He definitely means. "You dont need this drug".

    • @linedpaper5374
      @linedpaper5374 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      y’all, muscle loss happens during all forms of rapid weight loss. ozempic has no mechanism to uniquely cause extra loss of muscle mass. people lose weight on ozempic because they intake less food due to decreased appetite and therefore burn through stored fat. the exact same process that happens during a calorie deficit. seriously, try educating yourself.

    • @Lorij24
      @Lorij24 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@linedpaper5374 I absolutely agree with you, but the problem is that we've been fed this idea of weight loss and body weights for a very very long time. So when people simply go in search of a calorie deficit or weight loss, there is inherently a loss of bone density and muscle mass because we're not prioritizing resistance training or consumption of protein at the same time. This is yet another drug that is pushing this concept of just losing weight as an ideal standard to work toward. I think that the damage is in the intentional ignorance.

    I lost 70lbs in 6 months last year, no loose skin, using fasting and high intensity interval training (following Chloe Tings free TH-cam challenges). I’ve maintained effortlessly for 7 months now, using OMAD and trying to not eat too many processed carbs and refined sugars.
    Not sure what Mr Fung is going to say about ozempic as just started the video, but it’s extremely expensive and you have to stay on it forever or else you’ll gain the weight back. People who go on it for weight loss are also reporting a huge range of horrific side effects including their g3nitals peeling and worse 😱
    On top of that, many have reported very little weight loss.

I experienced 1 kg weight loss for the entire year which I gained back with a little more. There was absolutely no change with my blood sugar levels of 13+ daily morning fasting ( during the day my levels were between 3.5-6) . I went off it and tried my mom’s diabetic medication for a day, sugar was down to 8 the next morning!!! Now finally after lots of trial n error I am seeing some results on both weight and glucose drops in morning 5-6.5 🙌🏽🌈💜

She ended up being rushed in for surgery and is having a lengthy recovery time. I thought this video was a plug for Ozempic, but it’s not, thank goodness. Great explanation on how the medication does work when it’s working to decrease hunger and increase satiety and not a plug for Ozempic at all. There has been a website established for people who have claims associated with Ozempic so it seems there are many instances of health problems associated with the medication. I believe fasting is a far better method for weight loss than any drug and I’ve only come to that conclusion recently. It only makes sense that via the weight loss that can be achieved with fasting it can help prevent and possibly reverse diabetes. I have no problem with intermittent fasting (18-6) and a low carb diet. My problem is late night snacking because I have a bad habit of going to bed very late. Around 12 midnight, I get the munchies or cravings and I end up snacking. The bad thing is that I’m not even hungry and just do it out of boredom and/or habit.
    On my last Dr’s visit, he suggested I take Ozempic to lose weight but I declined it. I don’t need meds to help me feel full. I do get full with my normal portions of food. It’s just the bad habit of late night snacking that ruins any effort I make to do my intermittent fasting effectively. I also need to be more active. As a borderline diabetic I need to get a grip and make some lifestyle changes soon. ☹️

      I used to have the same eating at night problem. I never got ahead of it until we moved our large meal to 3 to 4 hours earlier in the day. This was not possible until I retired (my husband had already retired). I was willing to try this, but doubted it would work. I’m not that hungry at 2pm, but we eat the main meal of the day by 2pm on most days. The first few days I was still hungry late evening, but then 3 to 4 days in, the evening hunger DISAPPEARED. I was shocked. I seldom experience hunger or “munchies” now, and it’s great. I hated that feeling. I still mentally know what’s in the fridge or the pantry, but I have no desire to get up and eat. If your lifestyle permits eating your main meal much earlier, give it a try.

    6:18 This is what I like about Dr Fung: he gets that hunger is central to weight gain/loss, as in the long run hunger determined how much we eat, and thus drives how many calories we consume. It's all about how hungry we are relative to how many calories we actually need.
    That's why telling patients to count their calories, or to control their portion sizes, or anything like that, is always going to fail, because it leads to hunger. People, in the long run, eat until they are satiated, and that depends on all sorts of factors beyond the exact number of calories they have consumed. Two meals with the exact same calories can have vastly different abilities to curb your hunger.

      Exactly, it's far more simpler and reliable to just fast for a specific amount of time.
      OMAD is a very good strategy as well as going on a water fast for 1-2 days.

      too bad the drug actually is riddled with adverse effects that destroy your health once you reach your consumption goals.

      Counting calories does work for me.... until it doesn't. It becomes very overwhelming and adds extra mental stress and ends up causing emotional distress because Counting calories constantly keeps food on my brain. I'm so tired of thinking of food all the time

      I lost all my weight using fasting (went from an XL to an XS in 6 months) :) BUT a lot of people don’t count calories correctly. All you’re meant to do is eat an appropriate amount for your underlying body size, but you can do this by eating huge amounts of heathy foods that are low in calories in one or two meals each day. You don’t have to be hungry at all, but can still become slim and healthy.
      If you’re only eating one meal a day but overeating (like stuffing your face with chocolates and ice cream etc) you won’t lose weight. You still have to be aware of what you’re eating.
      I never counted calories personally, but also entirely changed my diet so I knew I was eating high volume foods lower in calories (like huge salads with steak and many different kinds of plants and vegetables in) :)
      Counting calories “doesn’t work” only because so many people do it wrong and eat like a tiny slice of pizza instead of a massive steak salad, both of which have the same amount of calories lol

    Ozempic works by reducing your overall calorie intake.
    I wonder if this guy believes his own spiel.

    I don't eat because I'm hungry. I eat because I'm super stressed. I can meditate or go for walks, but I'll still come back and eat again.

    Thanks Dr Fung! As soon as I heard delayed gastric emptying, vomiting came to mind because I vomiting when I can't adequately digest whatever I've eaten. Intermittent fasting and carnivore = no hunger pangs.😊

    So maybe Nicotine patches would work as well as Ozempic? ... I am a carb addict I can not control my eating...

    When you regain the weight after stopping Ozempic the weight that comes back is all fat - you don’t get the muscle you lost. You will be worse off. How many Americans are disciplined enough to exercise strenuously to preserve muscle?
