So, I’m the meantime I chose quite a few slabs of some different material to cut up tonight into some preforms and then get them dopped up! I’ve got agates, jasper, Unakite and a few others in store!
I am in no way a professional, I practice towards it everyday, but I will show you a cost effective and functional way to dop your stones without a “dopping station”. I use a tea light candle fueled wax melter for the dopping wax, and an electric wax melter to warm the stones. If you try this method, please use extreme caution because this stuff is HOT HOT HOT!!

The cutting and dopping look like a lot of fun. Love all the variety here. Yes to seeing that Kentucky agate polished as a puzzle piece. Definitely love to see that big boy slabbed up more to reveal that beauty.

with the little "puzzle piece, it would be cool if there was some way to give that small bottom piece some space away from the bigger piece, maybe hanging from a couple smaller chains on each side. Just to have a small gap to see how they fit and what is under each side.... possible?
If that Flint came with that Unakite it is Indiana Flint that you picked up and gave to me on our Geode hunting adventure.
New Subbie. Loved the tip about following natural cracks and crevices when you were doing the cedar. I unfortunately missed entering the giveaway, but still managed to find your channel. My children and grandchildren must have obtained a bit of the rock and fossil bug from me! It makes me happy to see them finding great rocks, so we discuss the Earth Science behind the formation of each, if I know. I constantly strive to learn more. My children scored highest on their science testing (required to graduate HS) due to us discussing rocks, bogs and fens, (of which we have many here in NE Ohio, since we have many terminal moraines and a significant amount of quarries and sand pits). No wonder you want us to pick where to start, all of them are great! I definitely think polishing up the "puzzle piece" would be cool. And as for which group first I say start with group 1 because its the biggest. Cant wait to see those yellow ones(I think you said it was Plume Agate) they are going to be gorgeous!

I would have loved to have gotten those little cut off pieces laying on the left side of the saw for my grand son he would have went crazy seeing them. He's only 4 and seriously looking forward to going rock hunting with me as it warms up here in nc

I think the Plume Agate is going to look awesome, love the yellow colors in it. The Kentucky agate looks great too. I’m so glad you’re doing videos showing all the steps to produce a finished piece. You’ve just about convinced me that I am capable of doing all this, I can’t wait to see the rest of the videos. Never heard of a Lightening Stone before, interesting looking for sure, & oh that Petosky stone is so cool looking ! Hey, what kind of Flap Lap do you use & do you like it ? Final question, truthfully which Tile Saw brand do you feel gives the best bang for your buck ? I think that botroydal piece has great potential, either each piece on it’s own or even both together somehow.
I completely stand behind hitech Diamond and their equipment! I use their 8 inch flat lap, they also have a 6 inch option, and a slanted lapidary that some people prefer, but I’ve had my lap for over a year now and never had any issues with it! And the saw I use is also from hitech. For price frame on what you can find out there, they’re the best option for starting off in my opinion. A tile saw just isn’t the same as a slab saw and there’s a significant difference. I started with a tile saw though! (Sorry for the late reply things have been chaotic!)
All the material is beautiful. I would like to see either the Kentucky Agate or the Rosebud Agate polished.
I’m new to this and just started cutting but to me seems like you save more of the material while cutting some pieces … maybe not. Do you tumble some of the scrap pieces?
Instead of cutting the standard shapes, have you ever freeformed any of the cut-off larger scraps? Many, many years ago after learning how to cut the standard shapes, those became boring and freeforming the stones was more pleasing for me. Also, since I designed my jewelry, I wasn't using pre-made settings.

Cabbing forever
What is a good slab thickness? That looks 3/8- 1/2... Curious. I just started jewelry making. I love rockhound stuff, and noe learning the slab cut and cab stuff
Alright so it looks like group #2 (Kentucky Agate) was the top pick! With group #1 (Rosebud Agate) taking a close second! I plan to begin working on those today and get that video out very soon!
So what is a good-sized to cut your slab to I am not sure have tons of questions I just bought my cap King and now I just need to ask questions and practice patience practice and persistence and I should be good
Great question! For newer lapidary artists I’d suggest doing about 1/4”-1/3” slabs to start. A little extra material in your first cabochons is ideal! It’ll become muscle memory after a while and as you get more comfortable cutting and polishing you can make your slices thinner

Dear lord my man you are going to lose some fingers, for having used these many times you come so close to getting them fingers in there yikes lol
That saw is safe to put your fingers near. It's a continuous blade, meaning it doesn't have segments or teeth that will grab your fingers. It's quite safe.
