    This reminds me of me and my son. He is 4 but I’m the family’s mechanic and do all there work on my drive and he is always there helping. He has is own little cheap socket set and screwdrivers with a high viz, he seems to have a passion for it and enjoys it. I love every moment and if he wants to learn il teach him. Can’t beat these moments Keith enjoy them. Great video

    Love that picture. Simplifies & describes the topic really well. Reminds me of when my dad tried to explain electricity to me when I was a kid while working on his 1931 Model A he was restoring (built the same month & year he was born). Although you explained it waaaay better and he didn't have a fancy thermal imager. :-) You'll blow Rocko's mind when you tell him that the electrons actually flow the opposite direction _out_ of the negative terminal and in through the positive (Conventional Current vs Electron Flow).

    Also, the voltage regulator very likely was working much much harder, and being over stressed wearing it out, from having that much of a voltage drop for who only knows how long... so a full rebuild or replacement in the near future would definitely my recommendation to the customer when the budget allows it.

    So great to you see you teaching your son this stuff while learning still comes natural to him....
    In my country, we have a great school system. A recent study shows that, by the age of 17, one's background doesn't matter anymore. Whether one's parents are on benifits or are the richest people in the country doesn't affect one's level of education, but there is a drawback: talent in anything but the arts gets stifled to a certain degree. Capable students are basically not allowed to race ahead of their peers....
    I suffered greatly in this respect, experiencing school as total drudgery until, maybe, the last two years of highschool and then college, when things finally got challenging. As events transpired I don't have any kids of my own, but if I did, I'd either not put them through the drudgery that is primary and secundary school, or: I'd augment their eduction by bringing up and teaching 'real world' subjects much sooner than a 'let's boost the median' school system would. Just like you're doing and just like speaking multiple languages at home.

    Regardless of the voltage drop, I would have replaced or rebuilt that alternator anyway just because it sounds like the bearings are beyond SHOT which may be allowing the rotor to contact the field windings if the bearing play is THAT bad...

    Great video thanks my friend. I like the way you are teaching Rocco. I like the father son time you to have together. I do have one question did the diodes in the alternator stop working or is it the wire?? I was tought alternator, diodes, regulator and then current to the battery am I lost?? Hot alternater is bad news. Keep up the great work bud I like the videos Rocco rules Great boy time well spent thanks

    • @NewLevelAuto
      @NewLevelAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Scott Pearson it's all a matter of the poor connection and high resistance at the alternator positive lug

      +Gene Mean yeah , we were in a little race against time , spent a little time teaching him to wrench while we were there swapping the alternator . But that was the boring part .

  • @gthegreat153
    @gthegreat153 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm trying to clarify what the problem is. I hear the alternator making a lot off noise. Now based on the video, the drop of voltage is what's causing the alternator to work harder and thus, more noise. Correct?why wouldn't u call the alternator bad?

    • @NewLevelAuto
      @NewLevelAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +GTheGreat1 The voltage drop at the connection of positive cable to the alternator lug is the failure . Causing the alternator to overwork. The alternator and cable were both replaced in this case. However this was more a video about understanding voltage drop as I teach my son . Thanks for watching, and hope you got something out of it. Feel free to ask any questions

    I have saved a funner picture of the ohms law squeeze/ pusher. Tell the kid if nothing is marked, the ground on the battery usually has a little wire attached to the body to ground when its not marked. Used to jump some ghetto cars, nothing was marked not even the battery had markings on some ?? Battery that was on it. Well probably was marked but the funk on the battery was disgusting

    Using the trusty "TestLight" could be Abolished? A Chevy tech rep visited the shop and announced, these newer car's (2018+) computers will get internal damage if a "test light" is used during troubleshooting because of a design change . What have you heard about this?

    • @NewLevelAuto
      @NewLevelAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I work on new vehicles daily here at over 22 collision shops. Not one indication yet that a test light will cause damage in any way shape or form. Remember to know the circuit. If I'm using a test lamp that draws 150ma would I want to use it to probe a feed that usually only handles 20ma? Of course not. So much of it goings into knowing the design. When I don't know I won't guess. I go to www.sae.org and have purchased engineering papers for things . Makes it easier to work on things when you have a leg to stand on.
