  • The Zebra snake is one of the 4 spitting cobra species that is found in Namibia and the most common as well.
They are easily Identified by the black and white crossbars, brown head and black neck. Zebra snakes are common throughout North western, central and parts of Namibia.
How does the spitting motion work?
Unlike most snakes, spitting cobras have exceptionally large muscles surrounding the venom glands. Once these muscles squeeze down the venom leaves the venom glands under the extreme pressure. Once this hits the L-shapes bend behind the discharge orifice the venom is deflected forward out of the mouth.
Zebra snakes are predominantly cytotoxic which causes excessive amounts of necrosis (death of tissue). This snake causes no breathing difficulties or any other symptoms associated with neurotoxic envenomations.
Recent studies have shown that zebra snakes cause Rhabdomyolysis (results from the death of muscle fibers and release of their contents into the bloodstream. This can lead to serious complications such as kidney failure) and Intravascular hemolysis (bleeding tendency).

That’s crazy! The best way to find them would be to cruise the roads at night as this is when they move. During the day they like hiding out in rocky outcrops and burrows.
Fortunately they are shy snakes that will try to escape, however when they are cornered they will spit. Hope you guys have expert snake handlers in the area

Yeah we have about 6 cobra species in Nambia of which 4 are able to spit. In the Windhoek area there are two cobra species. The area of Academia has seen an in crease in conflict especially around UNAM due to the new road and the new development (extension 1)

We had two in our garden in Windhoek - as a child I freaked out with fear. Our dog chased them both times (no way to keep him apart) and got spit at several times, but most of the venom stayed in the thick fur on its head. The first one could be caught (by Helmut Finkeldey), milked and released later, the second one was killed by our dog.
