    Cobras are very famous venomous snakes. They are one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Some cobras can spit their venom. Spitting cobras live in Africa and Asia. Black-necked spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis) lives in Western and Eastern Africa. This video shows Black-necked spitting cobra from Kenya. This snake was completely black and was spitting and hooding up. It was rescued by local snake catcher and we released it back into wild savanna. Bite from this snake is deadly without antivenom. But snakes use defence behavior first before biting. Cobra hoods up, opens its mouth and then spits when it feels threatened.

    Another amazing video of a fantastic snake. This spitter seems to have the most perfect rounded shaped hood. Is it the largest i wonder? Thanks again. I searched for a spitter in Ghana but never found one. But i did get to interract with an IndoChinese spitter in a snake handling course. It seemed to have an inexhaustible supply of venom. We gave up in the end! Once again thank you for your efforts and this beautiful video.

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you very much!!! True, this snake had a perfect shape and was quite large. The biggest spitting cobra species is the Ashe's spitting cobra. It is never easy to find cobras, one of us was also in Ghana and it was not easy to find snakes there. From our experience, spitters tend to save their venom after short time you work with them. They are intelligent and spit only when they really think they need to.

    The Yellow cape cobra and Black necked cobra are absolutely stunning creatures; their colors are naturally dazzling. And, living and surviving on the ground around large mammals, these snakes [cobras] have a difficult time of it. Spitting venom is a genetic wonder.

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@elijahtk3893 Every animal has a right to live. Snakes are a vital part of ecosystems. And they are beautiful. Do you know that a lot of medicine originates from snake venom? And do you know that most snakebites happen when people try to kill snakes? Snake will defend itself only if a monstrous human attacks it. Leave snakes alone and they will leave you alone!

My first-hand experiences with N. nigricollis in the W National Park while I was in the Peace Corps were unforgettable, so this was a treat. Thanks so much for helping the world understand these incredible creatures through video. Have you got any plans to film some unusual birds of Africa?

      Hello! Thank you very much!!! Always happy to read positive comments from new fans! :) How do they look like there? This completely black individual was stunning. In terms of birds we had the luck to film shoebill for a while, it will not be a long video but at least some footage we have :) For the future we plan to focus more on other continents, but hopefully we will have time to do some trip to Africa also.

    • @benjisinclair6048
      @benjisinclair6048 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LivingZoology Thanks for your response. Indeed, the all-black specimen you filmed was an exceptional beauty. The ones I saw in Niger were not uniformly black, there was typically a white or yellow band on the hood. I hope you will always try to convey a conservation message in your snake videos; species like B. nasicornis and especially the gabino will soon disappear from the wild all over central Africa if people keep collecting them for the pet trade. Breeding them is part of the solution, but only if some of the offspring are returned to the forest. Anyway, keep filming, and stay safe. BTW, how are you funded?

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benjisinclair6048 Sounds cool, individuals with band on the neck are also beautiful. Wow, you are basically saying what we think about this topic! Natural habitats need to be preserved, pet trade stopped and possibly some reintroduction needs to take place. We will always make conservation as an important part of our stories. We film wildlife for 6 years and for 5 years we had other jobs and this was a hobby. Since the beginning of 2020, TH-cam is giving us enough revenue so one of us can have it as a main job! But for many big documentaries, like the one in the link below we got funding either from Czech Republic or we got hired by organisations like Save The Snakes. @@LivingZoology born in nairobi. Lived there 26 years. Eent to college in athi river. This is where i saw snakes like i see earthworms on a rainy day. In my soe box. Shower. Door cracks. Looking back..most snakes are very shy an stay very still despite being spotted. We slaughter ed alot of innocent reptile lives..despite being the encroachers in the bush. In my 4 years there, there was never a single bite. I remember walking to the library in the dark with my arms shielding my neck..afraid of a rock python constricting me 😂😂. However, we needed the kenya wildlife service to capture a ginomous constrictor ftom a river that had about 8 men holding it back to back. They hanged that picture on the student resource center only to add to my paranoia. People said it swallowed dogs. All talk of course, looking back. I have been living on the north east coast of USA for 15 years now. No snake worries here..just obsession and addiction to your high def top shelf underwatched underrated videos. Been to the mara once in 2013 low season december, amboseli way back in 96, crossed the tsavo in the old train way bsck in 88. My dream is a road trip from capetown..throught namibia, botswana..to nairobi. Wish me luck😍😍

    I love these videos. I have so many questions. I will try to keep them to a minimum. 1. When the cobra spat at the camera, how much of a mess did that make for the camera operator? 2. When the venom gets on skin, what does it feel like? Is it oily? Watery? Does it burn like acid or more like poison ivy? Or is it just there? 3. When milking the cobra for venom, do you run the risk of causing harm to the snake? Do you ever feel you are leaving it vulnerable when released? How long does it take for the snake to regenerate the venom it lost in the milking process? Lastly, when the cobra has its hood open, the snake is really afraid, correct? Would thinks like heart rate and blood pressure be elevated with a hood open? I have more questions, but I will stop here. I do have one comment. If I were the home owner and I saw that particular cobra around my house and we were existing together well and neither were in danger from each other, I doubt I would have called someone to remove it. Aesthetically that was a living piece of art that is rarely surpassed. If a snake can be called gorgeous, that would have been the poster snake for all gorgeous snakes. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you again for another great video.

      Hello! Thank you very much for following our work! :) Let's go to the questions! Cobra spits at a person with a visor, not directly into the camera. Most people have no reaction to venom on their skin, some people get rashes, some get totally allergic and can't be close to spitting cobras. One of us had venom in mouth, it is bitter. On the skin it was not a problem. Milking snakes needs to be done properly and then no big harm to snake happens. But it is a stress, so should be done only if it has a purpose. We don't milk snakes, you usually need to have a permit for collecting venom. The head needs to be released quickly so you don't get bitten. It might takes days for the snake to have its venom glands full again, but it depends a lot on the individual, age, fitness...When cobra spreads the hood, it is intimidating, some cobras do that a lot, some individuals prefer to flee. How much they are afraid is difficult to say, but certainly less than when they spit - that is another level of defense. If you come closer, they will try to bite. Hopefully we answered every question :)

      @@LivingZoology I have been interested in cobras and mambas for decades now. Oddly enough, I am not interested in seeing them in zoos as much as seeing them in the wild. The spitting cobras seemed to have developed a defense unique to them. The venom they produce seems to be more part of the digestive process. I am not sure if venom would be considered a acid or not. Since the venom breaks down tissue for the snake to ultimately digest food, I always wondered if a snake venom would burn if one came into direct contact with it other than in a bite. Your videos are fascinating to me more than any video, program, or clinic, I have seen since first watching Marlin Perkins and Mutual of Omaha. I love seeing the true temperament of these snakes. I have discovered, through your videos, that even these snakes could kill all of you filming them, they choose to run in the end more often than standing their ground. I have to wonder if the snake thinks of its venom as a defense or killing force or just a food gathering source. I think the later. Thank you for answering my questions. THANK YOU FOR THESE GREAT VIDEOS. I am becoming a huge fan of them, your channel, and you. I am going to share your channel with my colleagues in the science department at the Middle School I teach. I have learned so much. I will keep asking my questions here. thank you again for answering my questions and again for these well produced, high quality videos. You are doing the world a great service and should be extremely proud.

      @@ovedfranco7664 Wow. It is funny. These evil creatures are helping to keep vermin and the diseases they transfer to humans at a managable level. Some venoms have been proven to aid in the treatment of various heart diseases. The therapeutic benefits that snake venoms may hold have yet to be fully studied to any extent. So, please, get off your high horse without having any facts.

    Such an awsome snake, i do wonder tho how spitting startet to evolve and be selected as a viable defense. Evolution is so cool

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a very good question. It evolved 3 times separately, as we say in this video: th-cam.com/video/WxjxE1UOJ4A/w-d-xo.html At first the hole in the fangs must have appeared and snakes slowly became using venom for defense also. But remarkably, this happened only in cobras.
