    hello, can I run two 30" Apple Cinema Displays on that graphics card?

    • @headsoftech
      @headsoftech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate, haven't tried it myself so I can only give you my best opinion and according to the specs it only has one dual link DVI port which is compatible with the 30" cinema display. For the other display you'd need to use a Display Port-to-Dual Link DVI adapter like this one[1] - make sure you get a dual link dvi adapter as a single link dvi adapter won't get you the full resolution.

    Thanks for such a good description of video card issues on Mac Pro, especially the older ones (3,1 4,1 5,1). The explanation of the power cabling helped me to ask the right question elsewhere to solve my board problem. This is especially true when you referenced other web site sources. Again, thanks!

      After buying a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2048 Mb video card for my Mac Pro 3,1 ... I was very confused reading all the tech literature/forums online because video cards are a strange new world for me. You presented a lot of information as a story rather than a disjointed series of facts. I went from "suspicious that I bought the wrong card" to "feeling confident" - As you know, most forum questions & answers are fragmented with bits and pieces that only make sense to gurus.
      With confidence, I installed the new card (purchased from MacVidCards.com), used both 75 watt connectors & 2 monitors == success for my Wacom CintiqHDT 22 inch touch screen display with NO driver issues on El Capitan 10.11.6 [[Wacom drivers 6.3.30-2]] PLUS the NVIDIA Driver Manager set to ""Use the NVIDIA driver that comes with OSX""
      --- my apps are After Effects, Premiere, & 3D modeling programs

      Suggestion to reach more people - Click on the menu to the right of the SAVE item and choose Open Transcript ; then copy the text of the web page ; paste into a text editor, minor editing ; and now you have a great blog article that follows your video content exactly. Search engines love this. Oh, and be sure to add links to this and other TH-cam videos (not just your channel)

    • @wilespn1
      @wilespn1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      just remember that I have 10.13.4 installed yes final cut is smoother with Vega 56 and hardy no lag rendering is fast with Vega as soon as you upgrade to 10.13.4 everything works fine it. no more problem my computer says now RADEON RX VEGA 8176 MB the sapphire works the best since its the same card that comes in the iMac 2018. I got the Vega from micro center for 299.00 some one got it the day before and returned it because he couldn't use it so they was going to put it up on the used department but it was brand new. you do have to plug both 8 pin power on it

      Hey John, you don't get the bootscreen with the RX580.

  • @richsparks6617
    @richsparks6617 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    HI, one thing I encountered in my setup is that you can install the RX 580 alone in Bootcamp. You just need to keep the rx-580 in the PCI slot that you want to the windows 10 drivers to install to. This is important because if you swap the positions of the card from one PCI slot to another on the mac, the RX-580 will not work. So PCI slot order matters if you want to just want to do bootcamp with one card in there. Overall, good video. Glad you went into the card details at the end. I enjoyed watching this.

    • @headsoftech
      @headsoftech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip mate, I personally didn't run into this issue, but I'll definitely include this info and credit you in my Bootcamp video as Windows is mental sometimes, and I'm sure it'll help other people out there when trouble shooting.

    You gpu card has an 8 pin and a 6pin connector. But you only connected the power to the 8 pin. Does the 6 pin not need a connection? Also can the gpu be inserted into the pci slot above? or does it have to be the bottom pci slot?

The good thing about using Amazon/eBay/Aliexpress is that they all have great customer support so if one of their 3rd party sellers sends you a faulty one, you're guaranteed a refund.

    Your instructions were perfect! Unfortunately, I tried the Radion RX580 card in my MacPro 5,1 (mid-2010) and it doesnt quite fit! I can install and seat the card, but cannot use the bar with the screws to actually fasten it down so that the card does not move. The card I got has a raised metal fastner connector -- sort of "L" shaped -- as opposed to the previous card, which has a flat metal part-- on the end which is too tall to screw the thumbscrews down into the metal plate on the right side. Important NOTE: If you have a Mac LED Cinema monitor, you must have an HDMI port, and cannot use the audio HDMI port (?). The RX580 Sapphire card I purchased did not have an HDMI port on the card for the Mac monitor. (The old card does.) I ending up removing the RX580 card and will be looking for another Metal card that will actually fit properly into the MacPro mid-2010 case and will allow me to fasten it down. Suggestions are welcome.

      I had similar instability with an RX 480 in a 2012 Mac Pro. I think it comes down to Apple's driver support for those GPUs or some other software issue, not power. I'm now done with Mac Pros altogether. I'm on Linux on a Ryzen system now, and it does what I need it to do. Steam is on Linux, as well as the vast majority of the games I've bought through it. I use WIndows 10 through VirtualBox for work, and Windows XP for some older games.

(would an SATA POWER to 6 pins adapter be enough for overclocking ?) - thank you for your answer

    • @headsoftech

      Hey mate, I haven't tried to overclock my card, only used it with the 8pin plugged in and had no problems with it. If you're looking at something faster that fits into the Mac Pro, it's probably worth waiting for the 5700XT coming out soon. Those guys use 7nm chips which can go almost as fast as Vega 64 at a reduced power draw.

      @@headsoftech Thank you for your answer :) sorry, the overclocking part of my question was optional, i was not clear enough, my fault sorry ... i'm not sure i anderstand correctly those power things ... as i said in my first question, that graphic card is given to need 235w, and the total power you can give it, is 75w mini 6 pins 1 + 75w mini 6 pins 2 + 75w PCIE connector = 225w ... i think, those 235w are needed when the graphic card is fully charged, but there are always 10w missing ... where does the Mac Pro find them ? or, can the graphic card fully run with "only" 225w ? i've seen a video from a guy, saying that, if the graphic card needs to much power (for example if you put a 250w or more graphic card in your Mac Pro), that could damage your motherboard ... do you think it's possible ? - thank you for your answer

      Hey mate, it doesn't completely block the port next to it, but the space is very limited. I managed to slot in a PCIe SSD card in that space and it ran fine, but if you can leave a space between the graphics card in general it's a good idea as GPUs can run hot. Here's a photo of what the space left looks like[1], when I had placed the SSD card currently in slot 4 into slot 2 there was around half a cm space between the GPU and the SSD.

      Yep, the 8 pin gives 150W (when connected properly via 2 mini 6 pins) and the PCI slot gives another 75W, so 225W is the max.

      Hey mate, I've had a few people ask me about that, did you buy yours new or used? Mine light up from the start, but I do know that you can customize the lights and fan speeds and there's a switch near the top which switches between different operating modes - people play with that so they have one for quiet and one for overclock. So what you can do is either, flick that switch to the other mode or if you have Windows installed, run Sapphire Trixx[1] which will let you play with all the settings to make sure it's all good.

      You can enable GPU Rendering on an AMD card via OpenCL. OpenCL is the CUDA counterpart for AMD. Premiere Pro should have this setting available (other apps like Blender, After Effects should also have this option).
      The point in buying an AMD card for a Mac Pro (or a Hackintosh) at this time is because a lot of AMD cards are natively supported in Mac OS.

    May I use both the 6 pin connectors from the motherboard straight to the Sapphire Nitro card (without using the dual 6 pin to 8 pin splitter)? One in the 6 pin input and the other one in the 8 pin input of the card.

      Hey mate, I got it running fine using a single 6-pin to 8-pin, but on paper the 6-pin port from the motherboard only supplies 75W, so you may run into issues if you don't use a dual 6-pin to 8-pin to fully saturate the power requirements of the 8-pin. If you check out GalactiNaut's comment below there's a link to a thread which discusses and debates the power draw in more detail.

      Vtudio Thanks for the answer my friend! But.. My question is:
      If I plug the one 6 pin output from the motherboard to the card 6 pin input and the other 6 pin from the motherboard to the 8 pin on the card, not only the one, but both outputs from motherboard, but the one would be 6 pin output to 8 pin input on the card. Will this work? (Sorry of my English but is not my native language) Thanks! :)

      Hey mate it'll definitely work as I've got mine to work with just one 6-pin to 8-pin, however I don't know how stable it will be long term. The technical issue is typically the 6-pin only provides 75W power while an 8-pin input expects up to 150W, so if the card for some reason (typically overclocking) tries to draw 150W from the 8-pin which is actually a 6-pin supply there may be risk of damaging the motherboard. Personally I haven't run into any issues and usually when too much power is drawn the system will turn off before damage occurs, but that's the risk worth considering.

      Vtudio Hey! Agreed! The only problem is.. I cannot find the dual 6 pin to 8 pin splitter available.. I click on the link on the description and it redirects me to Amazon.. The specific seller does not ship to EU (Greece). Is there any other online shop that I may order the splitter from?

    Hi mate,
    Just want to double check that the Nitro + card will block the nextby Pcie slot right? So after the card install, only 2 pcie slot left to use?

      Hey mate, it doesn't completely block the port next to it, but the space is very limited. I managed to slot in a PCIe SSD card in that space and it ran fine, but if you can leave a space between the graphics card in general it's a good idea as GPUs can run hot. Here's a photo of what the space left looks like[1], when I had placed the SSD card currently in slot 4 into slot 2 there was around half a cm space between the GPU and the SSD.

      Vtudio Plan to put 1 x usb 3 card, 2 x M.2 PCIE card & this Nitro +. So you reckon it still fit? 'cause the Nitro version have better heatsink, the Pulse version will make slot 2 available
