2 crazy facts about this game:
    1. The average age for the developers who made this game were only around 25 and had very little experience making any games
    2. Smilebit the developers upped the colors using the better cpu on the Dreamcast so it could never look better on ps2

Sounds similar to the situation that DMA design was in, the creators of Lemmings and the original Grand Theft Autos!
A bunch of young people getting settled in with their passions for game, art, and audio design.
For the original Grand Theft Auto they managed make an entire hour long studio quality soundtrack with 1996, 1997 hardware, software, all of the technical limitations, and all of their own personal limitations as well.

Somewhere in Asia, there is a city that cannot be found on any map called "Tokyo-To," but everyone just calls it Tokyo. The two hottest things on the streets of Tokyo-To are the punks wearing magnetically driven in-line skates powered by newly developed "netrium" batteries, and "Jet Set Radio," a pirate radio station manned by the DJ "Professor K," that plays nothing but non-stop, hard-core music. Those street punks have been named "Rudies" by the people of Tokyo-To. They roam the streets and cover the city with their personal graffiti, claiming that it is their way of expressing themselves to the world. However, ever since the Metropolitan Government and the financial conglomerate, the Rokkaku Group, combined their efforts to co-found the "21st Century Project," the streets of Tokyo-To have never been the same again. Police crackdowns on the Rudies have become more severe, and Captain Onishima is more anxious than ever to put them behind bars. The streets of Tokyo-To are ready to explode...

I played this first time on pc in maybe 2013. It still blew me away how good and fun game this was! What, after 13-14 years? This music oozes the artistic coolnes of late 90's, early 2000. This kind of funky and "rebellious" electric&hip hop music is still very underground.

I'm not sure it has no meaning or message, the game as a whole has very strong anarchist vibes and a general disregard for authority, and the soundtrack fits right into that mood being so eclectic and messy.
And also one of the voice samples literally goes "Viva la revolución!" lol
I'd say it's a great urban anti-fascist type of soundtrack but I'd also consider it chill and funky enough to avoid alienating non-political people unlike, say, certain types of punk.

Sonic Rush Adventure was composed by Tomoya Ohtani and Mariko Nanba. Many composers joined in on the Jet Set Radio series. For Example, Richard Jacques , composer of Everybod Jump Around, Bokfresh and What About The Future?, composed for Sonic R, Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn Ver.), Sonic Chronicles, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic Generations, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed.

  • @numburger
    @numburger ปีที่แล้ว +8

I don't know where else to post this so I'm going to share this here lmao
A kind of "fun fact" about JSR is that it only took around 10 months to complete. That's an incredible feat, no doubt, but here's the thing- The JSR you've most likely played and the one that was released on June 29th, 2000 are almost radically different games (a little bait-y, I know)
For one, there was no chapter 3. There were still the final stages (Explosion, Benten Burning, Fight or Flight, Behind the Mask and Final Groove) but the Cube and Combo storyline was not in the June 29th release.
Combo and Cube were still characters in the game but they were unlocked like everyone else and unlocked in the Shibuya and Benten districts respectively. Combo was actually unlocked after Shibuya GG making him the first character you get after Tab, who was originally Corn/Cone (both words are spelled the same in Japanese and both work as his name so it's a 50/50 chance it was either.)
Cube was unlocked after Benten Boogie. She was replaced by Mew/Bis in later releases. "Bisu" means screw in Japanese. If you were ever wondering what that screw on her back was for, that's why.
Speaking of Mew, she was originally unlocked in the _Kogane_ district after Kogane Circus.
Back to Cube tho. Originally, she wore a grey tee and a black, long sleeved undershirt with flames on it. She also wore denim jeans that were folded at the bottom. Kenji Ueda, the Jet Set Radio character designer and artist of the official art, never drew the US/EU design to my knowledge so the only official art of Cube is in her JP look.
I *assume* the new design was so she could be more inline with American fashion of the time post-Coin storyline.
They still kept Combo's Yen chain between releases instead of switching it out with an American dollar Sign.
Also, because there was no Cube and Combo storyline, there was no Coin.
Because the Cube and Combo storyline was added in for the US/EU releases, the stages are so much smaller and more enclosed compared to the other stages. They feel more like the early stages of Chapter 1.
Piranha also had a different name in this release. Originally she was Sugar.
Funny thing about Piranha, her and Combo switched challenges in the US/EU release- Combo got the race and Piranha got the half pipe tricks.
Piranha also has an interesting history with character themes.
Originally, she had O.K. House as her theme, then Yappie Feet, and then Bout the City in the HD release due to the song being removed.
On the topic of Deavid Soul, composers of Yappie Feet, and yes, "composers", Deavid Soul is a Japanese duo, not a single artist, originally had their song "Dunny Boy Williamson Show" in the June 29th release before having it removed and never being added back in, officially that is, I'm pretty sure there *are* mods that put it back in.
Dunny Boy Williamson Show was used in the Shibuya district and was originally Slate's theme, too, who was originally called Soda. He was called Soda again for JSRF.
I think all these name changes were made appeal to more angsty American counter culture. Names like Soda, Sugar, and Corn/Cone are subjectively less cool sounding than Slate, Piranha, and Tab.
Now about gameplay, the thing that easily needed the most changing. In the June 29th release, the Kogane and Benten tag stages are genuinely this close to being unbearable in my opinion. The AI sucks, with Poison Jam and The Noise Tanks just bumping into things and in the case of PJ, constantly falling into sewage. Funnily enough tho, The Love Shockers stage is pretty much completely unchanged between releases, so it makes me wonder why PJ and NT were given such weird AI.
Speaking of The Noise Tanks or just the Benten district in general, O.K. House was originally a Benten song, not a Shibuya one.
If you were wondering "Well if O.K. House wasn't a Shibuya song, what the first song in Love Trap?"
It was Dunny Boy Williamson Show.
Lastly, the cutscenes we're also changed, too. The first two cutscenes were unskippable and one of the biggest changes: *DJ PROFESSOR K* read the original ending cutscene's monologue instead of Combo. When I found this out I was *so* surprised, like an ungodly amount.
Aside from different VA's of course, that's all the changes I could think of.
I could talk about De La Jet Set Radio, a sort of patch of JSR only released in Japan before patches were really a thing, but that version is such a mess. Characters switch between Japanese and English names like every other piece of dialogue and I remember correctly, sometimes they used the Japanese voices, sometimes they used the English ones, again, a mess. A change I'm too sure about just because of my memory is that there was no radio in the garage in the June 26th version.
I guess another little factoid was that there was none of the Nu Metal tracks like Just Got Wicked in the Japanese version but I feel like that's pretty well known at this point. Another is that the game was changed to Jet _Grind_ Radio for the US release due to Jet Set already being Copyrighted. I love how on a lot of old JSR videos pre-HD release and to a lesser degree post, you still see people calling it Jet Grind Radio and JGR. That's so cool to me, it's like looking into an alternate dimension.
Jet Set Radio was officially released in America on October 31st, 2000, around 4 months after the original. It's kind of crazy how much they were able to fix and change between releases, but the cracks do show here and there like one of my favorites, "Go Grind City!" Instead of Go to Grind City.
Original Jet Set Radio, as much as I do find it charming, is the inferior version no doubt.
It feels kind of rushed in comparison to the American release of the game, which just feels more full and polished.
That's my two cents or I guess two dollars on this. I really want these to be more well known, especially considering how undocumented the June 29th release STILL is. Hell, I wouldn't know about of this if it were weren't for the sparse rumors I heard floaty around getting me intrigued enough to find the rom and play it on redream, an emulator for Dreamcast games.
If you want to go further down the JSR rabbit hole, I recommend checking out dedtoot and JavaFinch, two really cool people who have been able to uncover way more JSR content than I, a lazy hormonal teenage boy, could ever. Unused voices, unused songs, prototype footage, all super freaking cool.
There's also Japanese exclusive guidebooks for JSR and JSRF that have a lot of really cool character facts like ages, likes, dislikes, personalities, etc.
Only those character pages have been translated but there's a JSR Archives group working to translating those books.
There's also an American guidebook- the Sybex guidebook- that was found and uploaded, too.
The E3 prototype was found pretty recently too. The rom for that is floating around if you want to check that out and a cool guy called "Brobey", a prolific JSR speedrunner who even got the WR a few times, streamed it a while ago if the vod for that is still up. He streams other games of the late 90's toearly 2000', too, so check him out if you're interested in that.
    So uh, yeah.

first, we need to assemble the team - music composers, graphic designers and everyone else and MAKE SURE they have a clear understanding of what the game’s gonna feel like to play.
next, we gotta end all this war & bullshit - we stop looking at our phones and hoping that one group of people kills the other group of people, and then we’ll have space for art like this.
and lastly, we make it known that we want, no, NEED games like this - quit buying every fat cry, call of booty, battlefuck, and scream to our publisher overlords that we need new ideas, not the same shit!
and then we might have something close to the gaming golden age that circled about the 90’s to 00’s.

Tracks from the OST that AREN'T HERE:
Miller Ball Breakers - Deavid Soul
    Up-Set Attack - Deavid Soul
    Yappie Feet - Deavid Soul
On The Bowl (remix) Deavid Soul
Funky Radio - BB Rights (the timestamps people keep copypasting are wrong, that's Moody's Shuffle)
    OK House - Idol Taxi

    Slow - Professional Murder Music
    Just Got Wicked - Cold
    Improvise - Jurassic 5
    Patrol Knob - Mixmaster Mike
    Many Styles - OB One
Recipe For The Perfect Afro - Feature Cast
Dunny Boy Williamson Show - Deavid Soul
So yeah, Hideki Naganuma did a great job with producing and curating the soundtrack, but you're missing HALF OF THE MUSIC when listening here or playing the "remaster" on Steam. And for a game that is thematically built on music, that's a huge bummer.

    • @shojodagger4152
      @shojodagger4152 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Not really if you understand that in the original 60's slang "turned on" was a way of saying you were into something, like it gets you going, like turning on a car makes the engine run. If something "turns you on" it "makes your engine run", you're "all about that".
In the 60's, saying that music you liked "turned you on" was a hippie slang thing, not a sexual thing.
The idea of "turned on" meaning "sexually aroused" came much later, probably as a result of the "euphemism treadmill".

    • @benana2222
      @benana2222 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@shojodagger4152 Usually the euphemism treadmill goes the other way, doesn't it? Expressions become used often enough that their meaning is diluted, and a new, stronger euphemism is adopted.

One of the greatest video game soundtracks ever made. You simply don't hear OST's like this anymore. Give me this anyday over the overly orchestrated forgetful compositions you hear in many games today. The Dreamcast was amazing because of games like this and Sega just being Sega. Thanks for the upload.

If you don't mind rap. The MadWorld soundtrack is pretty good. It's a pretty cool game that was exclusive to the Wii. That sadly is being forgotten to time.
Entirely different vibe to this though. It is a lot more violent and edgy. Rather than just pure fun. Still good though. The game MadWorld. I guess the soundtrack as well.
