Cool, I haven't heard a ton about switching lead hands with single strokes over the years, but its always been really interesting and helpful for me. Really well explained and displayed here, too!
It has personally helped me a lot too! Thank you man🙏🏼 so much goes into technique and speed it’s impossible to cover it all in one video. But I tried my best to offer a few cohesive thoughts
@@InTheGroove_ no problem and yes he was very sweet and always super supportive , always made you feel you could do any style or hug you wanted !! Great to meet a fellow student of his 🙏🏻
After about 40yrs I'm into drumming again. Forgive my ignorance. Way back then, never used a metronome. I have it installed in the phone now. What settings do I use? When I put it at let's say, 150, the beats don't sound the same. It actually sounds slow. Thanks for your input.
This is great. Have you tried air-squats before getting behind the kit? Similar principle and it seems to help my speed and control on the kick. Cheers!
Not air squats, but I bring a jump rope with me on tour to get the same effect! Activates my ankles, calves, legs, and wrists. Also gets my heart rate up to feel like I'm already in the groove from the first song. Shoutout to Dave Elitch for the idea. I'll try air squats before the gig tonight!
Moongel pad works quite well. Almost no rebound at all, but you can't go overboard with it, cuz it can beat up your wrists.Where the downside comes in for me anyway, is that when I use something with no rebound at all, when you go to your snare drum, now you're really working to control the rebounds. I use just a Real Feel pad now, and don't over think it.
I didn't know they made a pad! I'll check it out. And good point about not going overboard. I've done that in the past, and my wrists did not appreciate it. Yeah, the goal for me is to overthink things in the practice room so that when I play live/in the studio, I don't have to think about it at all. I've actually been working on some finger and rebound control recently to balance out the wrist work I've been doing for the past few weeks! All these different surfaces and drum/cymbal placements give us a lot to think about when developing speed and technique. Cheers John!
@@InTheGroove_ I'm thinking you might enjoy this. For me, it took a lot of the guess work and overthinking out of the equation. I don't know how much you know of Dom Famularo, but he studied with some of the greats, such as Joe Morello and Jim Chapin, ( Moeller technique), who he refers to in the video as far as how they told him the simplicity of how to hold the sticks. Hope you enjoy. Ciao. John. th-cam.com/video/_KQRGQdKHgw/w-d-xo.html
Thank you. I like the idea of this as I’m familiar with intervals from training as a cyclist. I’m wondering though are you worried that forcing the speed you’ll be training yourself to tighten up when playing fast? Thanks again for the video.
Yo! You're very welcome, John. Great question. A few thoughts from my experience: -I don't think the exercise inherently causes you to tighten up. You can still feel the burn in your muscles while keeping a loose grip in your hand. The muscle burn in this scenario doesn't necessarily equate to being tight. -Something I definitely could have mentioned (and should have) is to focus on staying loose while playing fast. Being stiff/tight causes our body to work against itself. -Let's say the burning sensation DOES equate to tight muscles (I'm not an anatomy expert and don't completely understand the specifics of the physical/neurological systems at play here). If I DO tense up/become tight at the end of the sprint and continue to push through it, it's training my body to prolong that reaction and give me a longer window of playing fast and loose before the burn starts to kick in. If I can play for 30 seconds without the burn, I'm sure that will be PLENTY of time for any practical, musical situation. Or, if I can sit with the burn and train my body to loosen up during it, that's also a win. Thank you for the intellectual exercise this morning! I had to think deeply about this while drinking my coffee haha. Cheers!
Seems like a control issue. Start slower than you think you need to, sustain it for a while, and gradually increase bpm. Stop when you lose control, slow down 5bpm, and hang out at that tempo for 5 minutes. Repeat.
I would also recommend Jojo Mayer's clapping exercise th-cam.com/video/KzH0MNbQPQg/w-d-xo.html and I can honestly say it has improved my hand speed. I will also try the windsprints in this video.
It's all in the wrist, fingers are just a way to try and cheat speed. Even Dennis Chambers says this. There's literally no utility in fingers unless you're going for the world record
Of course man! I typically use 5A or Extreme 5A... but honestly, I'm still searching for my "ideal" pair. I notice I can play faster with lighter sticks like Jojo Mayer's signature pair, but I prefer a thicker/heavier stick when playing grooves in a live setting when I need to play to a bigger audience.
Played my first gig after doing your exercises for a week and my single stroke rolls have been faster and more controlled. Thank you.
This made my day. Thank you for sharing!!

Yo! Glad you enjoyed it Derrick. Thank you for the kind words. More coming soon🙏🏼
I dig your vibe... got the exercise package too..im in! appreciated :)
Dude! Thank you so much. Lemme know what you think about the workouts. Some movements are easy, and some are really tough. Cheers man.
Great video. I am also that guy that brings his sticks on vacation.😅
Hahah oh man I got some crap from my wife but it was worth it😂
Thank you!
You can replace the pillow with a towel over the pad. Folded in half and hide it corner below the pad.👍🏻
Ohhh true. Haven’t tried that before
Fantastic and with musical playing the end goal.
Thank you very much🙏🏼
Great video ) I studied with Peter also many years ago when he lived in montreal , Canada 🇨🇦 😊
Ah man that’s awesome! He was such a great guy and a great drummer. I miss him.
Thanks for the kind words🙏🏼

Good video. I'm trying to improve in this area as well. I have the same Vater pad. I notice you use the red side which is bouncier, isn't it?

This is all well and good, if you like Gene Krupa, etc.
I copied Gene's sound using controlled bounce.
Half the work for the same sound.
I cant alternate at all using finger stroke, but im fine when im doing it independently

Nope. Not yet. But I’ll let you know when I can✌🏼

Never heard of that, that does it actually help with speed? Interesting stuff
@@coolbeatguy It has indeed helped and I like this windsprint program. It is a bit reminiscent of speed runs on the drumometer.
