I will order her book. My problem with Mary Trump is that she does not seem to have an opinion on her Scottish grandmother. I am a mother and I like to think that my influence on the children is at least as profound as my husband's. I have an idea why.

I so related to much of this interview. I too was the product of a narcissistic Father. He wore my sisters down, despite her academic achievements, then twenty five years later attempted the same with me. It took its toll on us both. Unless you’ve been in this situation,you have no idea how virtually impossible it is to escape from.
May Mary continue to find healing from her toxic past.
If her father was still around he would be so proud ; she has developed practical and healthy ways to cope with her trauma.
Her whole extended family admires her. It is complicated though. Her mom and dad and brother are proud of her, of the earth or not.

Let’s talk about Mary Trump, the distant relative of Donald Trump who somehow believes that being born into the same family tree grants her the magical ability to peer into the psyche of the 45th President. Never mind that she hasn’t spent any significant time with him in years-why should that matter when there’s a lucrative book deal on the table?
Mary Trump is the niece who’s managed to make a name for herself not through any significant accomplishments of her own but by latching onto the coattails of a much more successful relative. Let's not kid ourselves-if her last name wasn’t Trump, she’d just be another disgruntled family member at Thanksgiving, rolling her eyes at her more accomplished uncle. But why settle for petty side-eye when you can write a whole book tearing him apart, complete with all the buzzwords that make media outlets froth at the mouth?
And let's not forget Fred Trump Jr., Mary's father. Now, it's sad and unfortunate that he struggled with addiction, but that’s hardly a free pass to bash the rest of the family. When he couldn’t achieve the success his brother did, it’s not hard to see where the resentment might've started bubbling up. But the real genius move was Mary’s-spinning her father’s failure and her distant connection to Donald into a profitable career. Because, apparently, if you can't be successful yourself, you can just tear down the family member who did make it and watch the dollars roll in.
The irony here is delicious. You're not the only one who went back to therapy when your uncle got in office. My local women's shelter dealt with a deluge of clients who were doing ok until this guy who acted and sounded just like their abusive ex was in the media all the time. It was a thing.

When the presidency was STOLEN from Hillary Clinton, and she conceeded to that madman, I lierrarly sat in stunned silence, tears welling up in my eyes thinking, what have these people done? They claimed he was a successful businessman, yet I knew about his real-estate dealings, his prejudice towards minorities, women and the disabled.
This election cycle we know so much more about how dastardly he truly is, and STILL 35-40% will vote for him. Sadly the hard-core mama's don't see how truly awful another trump presidency would be for the WORLD.

Omg Mary! This was great. I also had asthma as a kid. I started cognitive therapy at age 16 into my 20's. Im 65 now. I went back last yr. I feel that most of the people that have suffered PTSD were triggered by trump. Even the ones that hadn't had a previous diagnosis.I can't even watch him. I come from a toxic family. I could have been a someone like 45, but by the grace of God I’m honest fair and reasonable. I’m not sure how I didn’t dive into my own trauma. PTSD and the speculation of my life leaves me intolerant of Liars, cheats and thieves. Thank you Mary Trump for being you.

So much of her life experiences resonate with my adoptive family disfunction, alcoholism, disregard, and mental illness. Mary’s resilient tenacity and instinct to survive is an intrinsic feature of those few who can face the reality and describe the compelling family dynamics. I get it! I knew Trump’s disfunction at first sight. I think if you’re a person who has survived a family disfunction like Mary’s you know it’s power instinctually. To survive, one must avoid this person/situation at all costs! No compromise is possible.

A great conversation. I had a "rich" uncle (in truth, he was probably not truly rich, but definitely well-to-do). As a kid, I always noticed how verbally abusive he was, so it was helpful he lived in the next state and only visited. He always tried to control cousins in my family (even his SIL and my mom) with financial dependency. He would buy one extravagent gift (extravagent for the 60's) and you were expected to be grateful. As a teen, I really rebelled at showing any deference and by the time I got to college he made his one, last abusive comment. I never spoke to him after that event and he wondered aloud to relatives "why won't she talk to me?" I never regretted it as he was a controller through and through and I did not have to be his victim. To these people, "good riddance" is the best attitude you can have. Sad, but true.
I can certainly relate with a Jekyll & Hyde great-aunt who bossed all 10 of us around. Both parents only children, my mother fatherless. She was pregnant my whole childhood, plus I was the oldest female. Decided having children was not for me.
Mary. It takes enormous courage to advocate for oneself. I can’t wait to read your books and hope to start a shelf in my library of all your books. I saw a pic of your dad once, and he was so handsome, it’s nice to hear he was a man of good character, beloved by his friends.

Trump has been addictive in that it scares the heck out of me that someone sooo sick and cruel can be in a position of power. It triggers me but I still need to know. I grew up with a malignant narcissist and other narcissists. It is difficult to understand why any one individual would gravitate toward this monster. You have created a powerful and wonderful place in the world as a truth speaker and influencer. Thank you for being public and important. I pray people are listening to you and all the others who understand the games and lies that are revealed daily and reject this insanity in politics.

Mary's "Too Much and Never Enough - How My Family Created the Most Dangerous Man in the World" DEFINITELY helped sway some voters who were on the fence in 2020 about not voting for Trump a second time, or even for the first time. It was on the NYT Bestseller list for a couple months. I read it and then promptly passed it off to another voter, as was my duty. While the White House called it "fictional" (or something to that effect), and others said, "She was just trying to cash in" - she could've written it a long time ago but she didn't until it became clear that Donald was out to put a "FOR SALE" sign on her country.

Thanks, Mary. A book exposing my own traumatic early years hovers over me. I always said, "If my family was rich I'd be famous" because my generational life experience, and adverse childhood, parallels and goes beyond Mary's important story here. It encourages me to get my family hell down on paper. I understand now why the sight of trump makes my stomach churn.

You could be talking about my family - seriously very similar even down to the scapegoat child (me) ostracised and being disinherited - my family have money, which was always the carrot. Money was all that mattered. Both parents are narcissists but my mother was the 'Fred Trump' of the family. I have complex ptsd and see a trauma therapist, I'm 64. Thank you Mary. I've had covid five times and i'm seventy four years old, retired international flight attendant. You got me to thinking about all the trauma that I have gone through these last 20 years; especially with covid a break up with someone and your uncle two times. I'm exhausted every day and I don't like to leave the house and run into maga people which doesn't happen too much in New Mexico. But still I prefer to stay home more than I probably should. Just writing to let you know you are not alone in trying to heal from various situations that seemed to be going on either all at once or consecutively. I am often overwhelmed because everything is so difficult to accomplish these days. And i'm exhausted and i'm out of breath fairly easily. I moved to New York City in 1971 for my job. And I knew who your uncle was back then. I have been aware of him since then and I even met Ivana on an airplane coming home from Paris one time. I.
don't know what she was normally like, but she was absolutely adorable when I met her coming back from Saint Trope I guess. I am the age she was when she died. My father was bipolar and narcissistic, as was my ex husband and my last boyfriend was narcissistic ,so I am truly traumatized by the people that have been in my life as well. as other situations. Thank you for all that you do in trying to help us stay sane through this terrible, horrible, stressful me negative time in our country's history. Between your Uncle and my last boyfriend, I think there's nothing that I do not know about. mental illness now.

Mary, I have enjoyed your work for some time now. I must say, when I heard the title of your new book the other day, it grabbed me. I had the impression that, even though you had challenging family dynamics, we probably didn't have all that much in common. You seem, and are, so resilient, so many things I would like to be. How could anyone have said the things to you that are reflected in the title? I was blown away by this interview. I don't say that lightly. If you change the amount of money at issue, your family's position on the world stage, and a couple of details, it's amazing how similar our stories and experiences are. Reading your book is now a priority for me, and I know I will enjoy it. Please know that so many of us can and do love you. Thank you for all you do. 💙

I raised my children by trying to teach them by example.
I was raised in an upper middle class family in a Chicago suburb. (1960-1969).
My father was a Vice President in the Aviation Industry. My parents were Republicans, however, we moved to Southern California in 1969 where they eventually became Democrats. Very interesting story and difficult being that Newport Beach was 99.9% Republican! My parent’s friends were all Republicans and I have NO idea how they were able to keep their 🤐 closed during Political conversations a gift I never have been able to that I have NEVER been able to achieve. 😬
I also wanted to tell you that I was a “stewardess “ with TWA from 1970- 1990. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED TWA!! Those were the most beautiful, amazing and elegant times . I just retired from SWA after flying a total of 46 years in the AIR!

My family upbringing was Fundamentalist Christian which I eventually left but more than half of my siblings are still pro the new Trump-focused Fundamentalist brand of Christianity. Out of six siblings - two now deceased - two of us are not religious and two are still Trump allied religiously. To me this separation is equally painful as to a family break up. Mary’s are socioeconomic/paternalistic and mine religious but the break is equally sad.
Not usually a Bible-thumper, but this just popped up out of nowhere while i was listening to this brave and very appreciated interview.

Like you, I'm not a "bible thumper". I was raised Baptist, switched to Methodist when I turned 25, and quit organized religion. My Methodist minister was remarkable! I felt like I was going to seminary college and learning what the Bible actually was. Parables. A tool, a guide to navigate life. He was despised by old school "Christians". They wanted to tar and feather him and me. I went to Springfield IL with the superintendent of Methodist Churches and learned about the women of the Bible. That didn't go well at the pulpit for me 😏 Anyway. Thanks for sharing.
Mary, I've been following you and your incredibly brave and compelling sharing of your life experiences for several years now. Though the details of our stories differ in some significant ways, I feel empowered by your discussions of complex trauma and by the sincere way in which you share your healing journey. Regardless of your being related to the dysfunctional and sadistic uncle, who has, in fact, triggered my own trauma since he entered the national spotlight in 2015, I have found a connection and some relief & solace in your strength and your continual speaking out to our suffering nation, myself in particular. Personally, , I am so very grateful for what you have brought to my consciousness, in the way of acknowledging the pain and the traumatization that your wholly destructive uncle has wrought to my life and, undoubtedly, to millions of others. I wish for you continued healing, success, and joy in your life. I will remain forever grateful for your sacrifice in reaching out to tell your story. 🙏
This was amazing to hear that coming into the open and speaking and reflecting has healed quite a bit of the trauma, allowing Mary to rediscover her original outgoing, friendly temperament and personality. So interesting! Of course our trauma will never completely heal over as Mary says, but blue skies are appearing more often.

Thank you so much for being willing to share your story. I too grew up in a horribly abusive family and after therapy, made the decision to cut my losses and have no contact. And like your brother, my sister chose to remain part of the family. So, she got the "goodies" and received everything in their will (including what little the sperm recipient decided to leave to me at the last minute). Regarding experiencing repressed feelings - I made the decision to experience those things. This happened for me through meditation. I actually experienced the feeling of horror when I fully faced what my father had done to me. A feeling of "horror" is the only way to describe the experience. I didn't analyze it, just allowed myself to feel it. Once I did that, the feeling didn't last that long, and in fact just faded away. Facing those feelings will be bad, but maybe not not as bad as you imagine. And you won't get stuck there. We aren't our feelings (thank god), and feelings do fade. Good luck, and bless you for helping the country understand the ongoing danger of DJT.
