What is COSHH then? In the UK, COSHH stands for ‘Control of Substances Hazardous to Health’.
Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, employers need to either prevent or reduce their workers’ exposure to substances that are hazardous to their health.
In the UK, COSHH stands for ‘Control of Substances Hazardous to Health’ and under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, employers need to either prevent or reduce their workers’ exposure to substances that are hazardous to their health.
COSHH covers most substances that are hazardous to health.
    COSHH Regulations
Now that you know the COSHH meaning, it’s very important to be aware that these ‘substances’ can take many forms and include: chemicals, products containing chemicals, fumes, dusts, vapours, mists, nanotechnology.
In the UK, ‘COSHH’ is the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health.
One of the key aspects of managing COSHH is understanding the level of risk that exists within your specific operation or activity. Performing a COSHH assessment is fundamental part of that process.
To perform a COSHH assessment, you should:
-Gather information about the hazardous properties of the substances, the work, and the working practices (or find out what the problems are)
    -Evaluate the risks to health
-Decide on the necessary measures to comply with Regulations 7-13 of COSHH
-Record the assessment (if you have 5 or more employees)
-Decide when the assessment needs to be reviewed
Most businesses use substances, or products that are mixtures of substances.
Some processes actually create substances! Any of these could potentially cause harm to employees, contractors and other people. Often harmful substances are easily recognised, but there are many that are not so obvious.
Commonly used substances such as paint, bleach or dust from natural materials may also be very harmful to health.
As an employer, it pays to understand the risks related to the use of hazardous substances and the interactions between them.
Hopefully this guide on 'COSHH Toolbox Talk' on hazardous substances safety has been a useful introduction, make sure to click SUBSCRIBE for more hazardous substance training in the future.

Struggling to get my head around this topic, this is a really helpful summary! 😅

Good to hear it summarised things for you in a way that was helpful. Yes I agree, there is a lot of detail in COSHH, and the devil as they say, is in the detail!

@@Safeti Yes, there are a few hidden pitfalls it is good to understand the detail of what is required to stay compliant/keep people from harm.👏

Can be confusing topic, good video!

Yes, it can indeed. We find it is often glossed over due to the complexities and technical interpretation that is required. Not what you want when dealing with materials that can cause serious harm (or worse!).☺

Is the term COSHH used only in Great Britain?🤓

    • @Safeti
      @Safeti  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Sami, it comes from the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations in the UK - the term is not typically used directly for regulations outside of the UK but may be used loosely in some English-speaking countries as a general reference term relating to chemical risk management. 😀
