    Oh my god I’m so glad you felt the same about Mexican Gothic and also about Olivie Blake’s writing. In both cases, problem seems to stem from the writers thinking they’re cleverer/ more original than they are and just needing a bloody fiction edit!!

    I appreciate your book reviews so much!! Seriously my favorite book channel. I recently read Assistant to the Villain because it’s been getting a lot of hype in the book channels I watch but I actually didn’t like it very much. Parts were funny and the story was somewhat entertaining but the characters just seemed weird to me.

    I loved this video! I think so many books are overhyped and I can understand that liking a book can be personal. If you can overlook elements and you are just reading to read, completely understand. But there are some books that are just not worth the hype.
    I would add (and know there may be some push back) Serpent and the Wings of Night. This book was hyped and I can understand why people liked it. However... the writing was awful, there were phrases that were overused and distracting throughout the entire book, and the ending was so annoying🙄. I was so mad at the end of the book that I have yet to read the next book in the series.
    Thanks for the great vido Olive! 💜 I can't wait to see your other videos on what books did and do not deserve the hype.

    • @olivesbooknook
      @olivesbooknook  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Ah thanks for the kind words and your perspective! I definitely think liking books should be personal, and I know I like certain books that others won't - I really think the distinction is just the "hype". I chose these books because it feels like the general narrative around them all is "READ THEM THEY'RE OBJECTIVELY AMAZING AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM YOU'RE CRAZY" and I just can't stand for that, lol.
      I actually liked Serpent and the Wings of Night personally! But it was totally circumstantial. I was in the mood for a fun, over the top, doesn't take itself too seriously fantasy novel and it just happened to check my box at the time. I would agree though that I don't really think it deserves the hype or the way people represent it....and I will say that I did NOT like the second one at all. It was so jumbled and confusing and annoying.

    I had the same feelings about the guest list! I guess the thing that matters here is that people who praise it - have zero or close to zero experience reading great crime novels. So therefore it's easy for them to be surprised and that's why they enjoyed the book. While more experienced readers expect certain things from this type of books and didn't get any of it.
    I actually have read 3 books by Fowley and I ended up not liking any of them! The Hunting Party was okay, but before I've read it in a month time I've read another book, which was just the same! Even the murderer was the same! So I made an investigation and Fowley's book was published like a couple of months later, so probably there's no copying, but I just couldn't enjoy the book in the end.

    I appreciate you steering us away from the overhyped books! I really like Mexican Gothic, but I read it as pretty traditional Latin American-style magical realism so the element of fantasy was there to me from the beginning. I think if you view it through that lens the plot is more coherent. The real strength of it is, though, as you pointed out, the incredibly plucky heroine. I think Silvia Moreno Garcia really excels at writing fleshed-out, complex characters.

    • @olivesbooknook
      @olivesbooknook  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think if I had had that perspective going into Mexican Gothic I really would have liked it more! I was just so taken off guard by the magic at the end that it really skewed my final opinions. But I definitely loved the writing and the setup!

    Haha love this!! I haven’t read FBAA or Lightlark and I really enjoyed Mexican Gothic, but I 100% agree with all the others! The Guest List ending felt so unsatisfying, and I agree that Powerless was quite unoriginal/cringy. Also struggled with Shadow and Bone even though I love all her other books that I’ve read! I plan to continue with the King of Scars duology without having read the S&B trilogy, haha so nothing wrong with not reading that one!!

    No, Lauren Roberts did the EXACT same thing as Alex Aster. She went on TT lives to ask people if she should write certain things in her book. She got the name Paedyn from a girl who was in her live. I think she (and Simon and Schuster) deserves the critique and hate because they did nothing to flesh out a story or characters. It was so lazy. It focuses on a genocide and does nothing with it. And then there’s the blatant plagiarism of Red Queen…

    I'm sure someone else will say this, but I think I can explain why you didn't like Shadow and Bone very much. It's actually something you already mentioned in the video, it's her debut book. I read the S&B trilogy before moving on to Six of Crows, and I enjoyed both. However, the writing is significantly better in Six of Crows. I'm not one to normally care about writing much. I have two categories: readable and omg who let this be published. But I even found myself mentally commenting on how much better the writing was. I have seen other people on the internet say similar things, especially those that read Six of Crows first. I would say if you can get past the writing, I do think the series is worth it just to flesh out the world a little more. Also they are really quick reads once the plot finally starts to pick up. I think I finished all 3 in about a week. However, I would say you shouldn't let not reading it stop you from reading King of Scars; we read books for fun and there aren't any rules. I'm hoping to read it soon myself and would love to hear your thoughts. (sorry for the short essay.. but i hope it was somewhat helpful to someone somewhere)

    • @olivesbooknook
      @olivesbooknook  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Wait this is such a good point. I guess I subconsciously knew that S&B was her first but didn’t clock that maybe that’s the reason I couldn’t enjoy it as much! It is CRAZY to see how much she’s grown, within the grishaverse but also her other books too! Good for her. Maybe I will go ahead and skip straight to king of scars!

  • @baileykestner3769
    @baileykestner3769 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I also loved Six of Crows and did not enjoy Shadow and Bone. I read S&B first and did complete the trilogy, but it was one of the first fantasy series I read as an adult and I don’t think I had a very good gauge. 😂 I tried to reread parts of them after the tv show came out and couldn’t handle the level of unnecessary detail that I felt was included. I think because I was more invested in Ketterdam and the Crows I could look past the excessive detail in SoC. In S&B, it was just too much for me.

    One Dark Window is a book I feel is overhyped. The writing was SO repetitive it took away from the story line. I found myself getting so frustrated reading for the 100th time about the king of destriers gray eyes and callused hands, lips curling and being pulled by an invisible string, and the clenching of jaws and fists. It was just too much.

      Sally Rooney’s definitely overhyped! I suspect that people in the literary world like her politics/world view so have promoted her more than is justified (very similar themes/tropes in each book, writing quality is inconsistent etc).

      I have been waiting for someone to ask me about sparkling water for FOREVER. Hi, how are ya.
      I love waterloo but it's not at all like Poppi! Poppi feels more like a healthy soda with a lot stronger flavors. I'd say waterloo is more like a la croix or a bubly, it's pure sparkling water with nothing else really added. I personally really enjoy their flavors though! You should try Ollipop sometime if you see it in stores! That's definitely more like a Poppi.

      Hiii. So unfortunately I don’t like olliepop but I love poppi which is weird. Haha I have also wanted to try bubbly and la croix too.😂 I guess I will have to bite the bullet and try them all. • @olivesbooknook

      If you’ve never tried either of those seltzer brands, just be prepared that after something like Poppi, it will taste like it has very little flavor! That’s actually kinda why I like them though. I just want a little *hint* of something.
      You can definitely get La Croix or Bubly anywhere, they are super super popular. Some other brands I like are AHA, polar, honestly even Costco’s seltzer aren’t the best slept on. They all taste really similar but I just don’t really like drinking water that much so this makes it more fun haha 😂
      I think right now my fav brand is Waterloo. They have a blackberry lemon flavor that is SO. GOOD.
