The entire perception of the Vikes seems to be based on the difference between Darnold and Kirk, and the entire perception of Darnold seems to be on his start at the Jets. Folks have conveniently forgotten that Kirk's first 3 seasons at Washington were arguably worse than Sam's start at the Jets - Kirk had a worse win/loss ratio, and worse TD/INT ratio! Folks also forget that until KOC got to the Vikes 6 or Kirk's 7 NFL seasons were between 7-9 wins. Year one with KOC that jumps to 13, and probably could have it double digits again. Kirk is always known as accurate - per Pro Football Reference his throws on target percentage as ranged between 76-82% these past 5 seasons. But how many people know that for past 3 seasons that Sam started - 72%, 74.5% and 77% of his throws have been on target. Sam was more accurate when going 4-2 in 2022, than Kirk was when he went 13-4 that same year. Sam suffered from nearly twice the drop rate at the Panthers than Kirk did at the Vikes. Swapping that number alone would make Sam as accurate as Kirk. There are also signs that Sam's INTs and fumbles are reducing as well. And let's not forget that Kirk has fumbled 26 times in his last 41 starts. But as Jordan mentioned, Sam's mobility in the pocket, ability to make plays out of structure, and underrated rushing ability is something KOC has never had before. Sam led the entire league, RBs included, in rushing TDs for the first half of 2021, and Jettas and Addison have probably never practiced a scramble drill at the Vikes. I think Jordan is being cautious. This Vikes roster is better and deeper at every position group than it has been these past 2 years. I'm really expecting them to win the division. They are the only NFC team that beat the 49ers on their merits last season, and Jettas was watching that game from the bench...
I think darnold will have a good to great year this season, for the same reasons you describe. Cousins fumbles in at least 2 seasons, were behind the worst o line in the nfl. Just to be fair. 2 years in a row cousins was the most hit/rushed qb in the league, and still put up those numbers passing! Dude was icing his visibly bruised ribs after every game at one point, even posted himself at home on the couch icing his ribs...
@@jrolladarksine8551 Yes, I'm not having a shot at Cousins per se, just illustrating how differently the two guys are perceived when arguably at the equivalent stage of their careers, they were almost the same.
@robe2504 well, not sure about that. Cousins put up good numbers early on in Washington besides season 2, and started to shine in his 4th year and never stopped. Lots of qbrs over 100. His avg qbr is 98 lol. And yes he had some 100 qbr years in Washington, they're not all from mn. Darnold started immediately I believe as a rookie unlike Cousins, and put up decent numbers pretty consistently. Darnold never matched Cousins qbr though, 10-20 points below. Darnold hit a top qbr of 92 but avg is 78. Not knocking darnold, but nah Cousins has always been better. I'm excited to see darnold this year though, I think it'll be fun to watch!
@@jrolladarksine8551 Cousins started 2 wins 7 losses 18 TDs vs 19 INTs in his first 3 seasons, even with the privilege of sitting, compared to Sam 13-25, and 45 TDs vs 39 INTs. So the things folks criticise Sam for, losing and throwing INTs with the Jets, Kirk's results were even worse in a better situation at Washington. Yes, Kirk did start turning the corner in his 4th season, but my argument in that so did Sam at the Panthers. Sam went 8-9 there in his 2 seasons, all others including Baker and Bryce, have gone 5-28. Sam reduced his INTs and fumbles, his accuracy improved, and he looked calmer in the pocket - but every time he made a mistake or lost many folks reverted immediately to the stigma of the Jets and seeing ghosts, and were incapable of seeing the improvement. Shanahan saw it, enough to give up on the 3 1st round picks they invested in Lance, to keep Sam. KOC saw it, enough to sign him within 24 hours of Kirk leaving. I'd argue that Sam is in a pretty similar place to where Kirk was when KOC arrived - Sam's had 2 winning stints/seasons, albeit incomplete, in the 6 seasons before he came to the Vikes - 7-6 with the Jets (2019), and 4-2 with the Panthers (2022). Kirk also had 6 seasons at Washington before coming to the Vikes, winning only two of them 9-7 (2015), 8-7-1 (2016). And Kirk had 4 more middling seasons with the Vikes before really breaking out with KOC in 2022. Kirk also ad 26 fumbles in his last 41 games (3 seasons) - one of the worst in the league and little different to Sam who is known for it. Somehow that breakout from consistent to top 8-10 QB seems to get attributed more to Kirk suddenly improving at age 34, than other things around him that may have changed like KOC, Hockenson, Addison. Sam is only 27, has more natural ability, is more agile in the pocket, and a legitimate rushing threat and now Sam will benefit from all the things that were around Kirk when he elevated. In essence, my argument is that Sam is primarily judged on his early days at the Jets, and the steady progress he as made since is being overlooked, in comparison to Kirk whose early struggles are overlooked, and many years of mediocrity have been instantly superseded by the success of his two seasons with KOC. I think KOC is more likely to immediately elevate Sam to a level equal to or even better than Kirk, just as Shanahan did for Purdy, and conversely, we might see Kirk fall off a bit at the Falcons, especially with the decline of age and injury. I think it's worth re-watching how easily Sam moved the ball in his few drives with the starters at the 49ers, which we also saw in his one pre-season drive with the Vikes against the Raiders starters. I think Brandel and Ingram will be a lot better than many Vikes fans expect - Ingram also suffers from the stigma of some earl mistakes - and I think Sam will be very efficient from day 1. The question I ask is how would the NFL world feel about this season's Vikes, if Kirk was still the QB? I'd expect that they would be right in division and playoff contention, I mean the Falcons are, and their roster is significantly inferior to the Vikes. And that's without considering Flores' remodelled defence. I think Sam will be as good, potentially better, than Kirk which puts them right in the division hunt and NFC title hunt to me. Folks forget that the Vikes were the only NFC to beat the 49ers in a meaningful game last season. Skol!
