- So I have been doing stick welding on 18 gauge stainless for quite a long time and thought to share some info about this thing. People often ask me things about doing it, so here it comes. Definitely a lot more tricky to do but overall says its surely a doable task. The 1.6 mm electrode are difficult to weld because of very thin coating but as soon as I got a good welding electrode, I surely upload a video over that.

thank you for your very interesting video. I've weld many stainless steel tubes 2mm thick with , and I often do holes when welding 1mm thick plates. I do like the demonstration with the 3 diameters sticks for all the differents welds.
Buddy the problem with thick rod is that the amount of Amps needed it to melt, when it reaches upto that state the temperature is already too high for sheet metal and that cause the holes. It's doable but it's not going to be a fusable weld.

Amazing, innovative work. Stick can do TIG type work. Exactly what I'm trying to do, 1 mm ss welding into containers. Stick is underrated for this type of work with many using TIG if at all possible.

@@ambroscustom Hey.. quick question... does your welder have a 'hot start' ? Would this technique be possible with a welder that had hot start?
No dear, it didn't have a hot start feature and I don't think you really need that, it will surely going to make holes in the sheet of this thin size. Hot start gives you a more penetration and we did not required here because what ever tack you are going to make they penetrate easily.

Thank you for this helpful video. I bookmarked it long before I purchased a welder and now I hope to use your tips for a challenging project. I need to weld (expensive) 316 stainless steel handrail fittings to a 25mm railing of 1.5mm thick, to make a roof support, and polish it afterwards. Getting rod sizes and Amps correct really matters.
The result of the pickling agent looks great but unfortunately, in my country it can only be purchased by certified professionals because it’s so hazardous. I will need to grind.

I used to have certification for MIG welding thin sheet stainless steel.
We used to have to weld panels together with no burn- through, only discoloration that would then be cleaned with the acid.
I don't think I ever even TRIED to weld any thin sheet stainless with a stick.
Stainless is so touchy, I will warp just looking at it. You don't need to weld it.
Just heat it with a torch it will assume a whole new shape.

Thanks mate. If you provide an aluminium backing as heat sink you can safely weld 20 gauge thick sheet but rather than performing the full weld go with stich weld to avoid heat deformation.

Thanks brother, onto the bottle there is nothing written about the contents, but you can search about stainless steel pickling agent or pickling paste. This is specially available for removing black oxides from stainless.

Hi AMbros Custom, i would like to do a repair job on the stainless steel bowsprit of my boat. It is made out of 1 inch diameter tube. I was looking to see if i could get some advice on you tube and came across your channel. Your video was really helpful, but i just wanted to ask, will welding the tube be the same as the flat pieces you demonstrated, that is ,can i use the spot welding method with 2 mm rod, or do i have to do a complete pass.I have a small a.c. welder. Buddy, there is a video on my channel in which I weld on 2" pipe having a wall thickness of 1.5mm. the process is almost the same. That is definitely a doable task. Tried to make the joint as precise as possible and avoid any air gap between the joints because that's the main cause of blow holes. Tried to have thin electrode and kept the amps at 45-50. That is very good for 1-1.5mm metal and also provide better fusion. Don't make a complete run in one go. Stich welding is the only way you can do it. This video might help you little bit to boost your confidence. Good luck.

Preffer brazing rather than welding, stick welding damage the tank, or you go with tig welder. You can fill the small pin holes with stick welding with 2.4 mm rod at 60 amps but be careful, it's a bit more difficult.

Buddy the steps are almost identical. If the gauge is less than 18, then don't go with stick welder it's gona make holes which are difficult to fix.
1mil stainless runs good with 2mil electrode @49A
How do I weld 22gauge stainless steel sheet. I tried the direct arc to the metal method, but the sheet just melted. Then i used extra steel wire to weld it. It worked but its time consuming plus the finish is not fine

Some welders use a shorter lengths of thin, say 1.6mm stick to minimise bouncing, but is it okay to cut an electrode down to size?
Yeah buddy its ok to cut. Or you can also remove little bit flux from centre and hold from right in the middle, in this way you can use half from both sides. If find it difficult then no big problem in cutting but it's always good to practice with bigger one, that also minimise the wastage.
So you can tack 1mm stainless with a 2,5mm electrode If you are fast and don´t pull lines ? Thanks I will try it with your 45A. I need that for holding before I do hard soldering.
Yes dear you can, also using some sort of aluminium block along the weld lines also helps. If feels difficult to do then try changing the polarity will definitely help, electrode to negative and ground to positive. Good luck:)

The cube is a cross did'nt know that. Very nice habilety. Does brand of rod make a difference. I tried to solder 2 spoons as practice , low amp rod sticks high amp spoons melt ! E 6013 3.2mm ...any advice is welcome. I use $99 inverter from the web
Well buddy the trick is that to weld thin sheets it's absolutely mandatory to use thinner electrode. 3.2 mm is considered to be thick. I use 2.4 mm for 1.5 mm thick material.Never tried 3.2 mm for these thin materials. So go for thin and go low for thin sheets.

People often doing brazing on thin sheets( brass filler rod) but the out put result is not pretty. You can't use stainless rod for brazing.

Dear for stainless-steel machine really didn't matter at all. All you need is right settings and correct size electrode and good timing. If you have all of these things than you can easily do welding.
Want to let you know that using Solar flux which is a metal holding flux on both sides of the sheet metal will really make welding a breeze. Just saying fella. Nice and honest welding.

@@ambroscustom You will be amazed how great this stuff works. This was actually a top secret material during WW2. Back then they only had oxy acetylene gas. The old timers called this a holding flux. Good luck fella too.
what is the size in fraction of inches closest to the 2.0 mm i only see 1/16" 3/32", 1/8" 1/4" sizes what do you recommend for 18 g stainless
Buddy if you able to find 1/16" it's good other wise for 2 mm 5/64" is the size in fraction. 3/32" is a bit thicker for 18 gauge sheet so don't go with that.

It's not a glue, it's pickling agent. Just search pickling agent for stainless steel

Changing the polarity will help. Connect electrode to negative and ground to positive.

I don't have oxy, but there are few people who does brazing on stainless steel pipes for bike frames. You should check them.
first these are thick , not thin , thin is below 0.5 mm and even if you manage to weld it without holes it get caved in and badly warped , you need to get a mig welder , mig use 0.8 wire so easy to melt compare to that stick

It's DCEP dear, untill you have right electrode, it won't be any issue to weld sheet metal with right amps. Thinner electrodes are much safer in welding but required fast action.

Well dear you can consider those shapes to be in floating position. If things worked well with the actual product then float welding demonstration should definitely work.

+91 98106 54634 bro meine Delhi se purchase ki thi electrode. Ye number dealer ka hai, isi se purchase ki thi via India Mart.. 1.6 mm mat kharidna kaffi difficult hai kaam karna or costly bhi hai . 2 mm Vali sahi hai. Good luck.

Use filler rod method, take a separate rod and place it over the joint and then ignite the arc.
Take some of that youtube money and get a tig machine. I need some help learning how to weld 316L without cooking the shit out of it! Doing this with stick is impressive, but not practical for larger projects.
Absolutely correct, I showed it for exceptional case, even I himself didn't recommend but incase you have no option this is what, as far as new tig I am saving for it to get better quality machine.
