  • Today we will touch base on some key points to look out for when stick welding with 309 rods! It can get messy and a little difficult when you are first starting of so here is a little help.

    This man's tuitional skillls are exceptional, listen very carefully and you'll become a top-flight welder. I noted that this rod runs very similar to flux-core wire. Key point of welding is ; look after the sides and the centre takes care of itself.' In 99% of all instances😉

    Stainless stick welding has taken me years to learn and it always surprises you. Seems like it's always a battle.

    I once ran S.S.stick for 3 months! After that got on a 7018 job , your 7018 will look awesome

      The color is instantly gone once you hit it with a stainless wire brush.

    Eldinf stainless with these rods is a completely different cat to skin than welding on just carbon. It's a lot wetter, and a lot hotter. Great video and great information

    Thanks for the info on starts. It's a little bit like how I strike a 7018 ver. Guess I was doing the 309 wrong, looking forward to trying this technique. For anybody that's practicing I had a few old timers tell me whip from side to side and count; one two three. Lays in super tight! (If you need a mental guide to go by.)

    I’ve ran this rod before and kept getting problems. Later realized all the complications with iit. This video further supports that. Good stuff here.

      What kind of problems were u getting? Because I keep getting slag right down the middle ever 5th rod or so. I think I was weaving to wide but I still get the slag every once in a while

    Those rods are expensive. Practice costs $$$, but once you get the hang of it, you will make some beautiful welds. I like this rod. It goes on smooth, sounds good and doesn't spit dingleberries. The end product looks like jewellery.

    I have a carbon tube with some kind of coarse textured coating and a stainless flange so I hope this works out. I’ve tried some practice pieces, but now it’s go time. I’m goin in; wish me luck.

    I use to do a lot of that 309 to get the slag off I used the wire wheel a lot turned out real nice

    I've found sticking the rod and letting the amps flow thru it a couple seconds, snapping it free and lighting my arc help prevent porosity in my beads

    I always thought I had done something really wrong and I was being punished when I had to run 309 vertical. You did a fine job, looked as good as any I've seen and better than I've done myself. By the way, what did you do wrong?

    I couldn't believe the slag balls that came off my first few attempts at 309 buddy, I bad balls of slag running down and upon knocking them off I was like, oh, its flat haha!

    Nice one Hjalmar. I use 312l-16 rods a fair bit and those are a b*tch to run in position just like 309. Flat and horizontal no problem, but vertical up and overhead if you don't do it right you get a lot of slag incusions.

    Another tip for anyone looking for it. Weld it on straight polarity (same as tig)
    It makes you see the puddle a little better 👍🏽

      6013 welds best on straight polarity just like 309

    I have stick welded 1mm 304 with 316 rods. Made a table about 13 years ago. Still got the table.

    Taking a test next week on stainless. I've NEVER welded stainless, your vids helped me pass my last jobs test. I'm super nervous about it since I never did stainless and dont know the heat. All I know is I'm using 3/32 and 1/8 rods. Any advice is desperately needed. Test is on Tues of next week.

    Looks good brother but a weave is way easier to keep flat than a pipe stringer... I’m hoping you’ll be moving onto stringers in the near future

    I have to weld some 304SS thats only about 2mm thick for a hobby project I'm working on... Ive never welded in my life 😅
    Something tells me I should go practice with some 6013 and mild steel first after watching this. Should be interesting

    I did a job with 309 rod. Welding 1/2 steel to stainless steel hand rails and also the ladder to the plot form all was check by a cwi

    Another great video. Watch out for that stainless slag buddy. It will ping off without warning and get you wherever you stand - usually on your lips! Ouch.

      Stainless steel slags are different from mild steel slag. I was welding stainless once and the slag popped and hit my eye once, wasn't that serious, i had to wash it off with some water but definitely something to keep in mind of the next time i weld stainless. But then again always wear safety goggles when beating slag off.

      @@JarrenW83 I couldn't agree more. Safety specs when chipping slag. In fact, at all times really. I'm not a safety Nazi,but a welder is not of much use if he/she can't see.

      I agree please do a video on the monster. Tig root and hot pass, 309 fill and cap in the 6g.. having a hard time with this test

    I weld w/309 3/32 in trash plants and its the most difficult rod to burn. Ill get descent welds but there is these infamous wormholes that appear. I swear they lead to another wormhole in a plant across the country.

      @@weldtube thanks for the tutorial on this hard ass stainless stick rod. dude I busted a test for Wyatt October of 2017 cuz of this f##@rod we welded our first set of plate test with 7018 then they said second set was with stainless stick .😑 this video was real helpful but can you do a video on this rod in the 4G position

      luis Torres electrode is always negative unless you’re doing flux wire.

    Can you still get proper penetration with the zig zag method here?
    I passed my visual test the other day but failed penetration and one of my instructors told me it was due to the zig zag technique, so I was told to use the triangle shape to weld but it's just not clicking. Welding 308 on carbon steel

    Let it cool way down in between welds is crucial and run it as cool as you can handle going uphill.

    309 is nicest rod I ever used. So smooth arc. Plenty chromium and nickel. I can't wait for my lung cancer to pop out.

    Look Northern sweden welding. They weld 2mm wall pipe with remote. I do same also 6g and its x-ray quality

    Where do you have the dig set? And are you E+ or E-? Your welds look great. I will be testing in the next couple of days for 3F and 4F carbo to carbon with 309L. Just looking for any pointers

    75amp, soften arc force on machine and burn only 1/2 the rod. Seems to be a waste but less issues.

    The rod must get red hot like that due to the higher resistance/lower electrical conductivity of the rod itself? Great video, thanks a lot for making it.

    We usually tig stainless pipe at our shop. But sometimes we stick weld but all of the experience welders tell me that doing stainless stick welding in the vertical position is a no-no. Only flat or horizontal. Is this true? Cause obviously you can do vertical based on this guy's welds
