    9:13 Jeremy Irons did sing the majority of Be Prepared, but when he yelled the line “You won’t get a sniff without me!” he actually blew out his vocals and they hired Jim Cummings to finish the song while Jeremy was healing his vocal cords

    I love Pocahontas for its animation. Visually, it's one of my favourite Disney movies.
    I think what kills it is the writing. People point at historical (in)accuracy as the reason this movie fails, but I think the biggest flaw is the forgettable dialogue. It's very safe and boring. If Pocahontas had fantastic quotes and strong characters, many people would love it and choose to ignore the historical inaccuracy.
    Still, I love this movie's visuals. Some shots are so beautiful they actually give me what I would call an out of body experience. Just for that, I'm glad we have Pocahontas. I give this movie all my love.

    • @mattammarofficial

      That's fair. I think, with all the work that went into Pocahontas, it's a pretty clear case of too many cooks in the kitchen.

      It’s kind of amazing people say it’s boring because when I watched it I thought it was just as enchanting and grossing as other films but I think a lot of people had a lot of expectations of Disney and a lot of people expect Disney to be a lot of scenes and a lot of music and a lot of dramatic, magic and wizardry and just a lot of fantastical stuff that this film just didn’t have and for some people that’s a preference for how they want films to go but for this film they decided to do a more grounded is retelling, and that’s OK because everything in this phone was still just as encapsulating not just for the visual about the story as well so❤

    So originally, Grandmother Willow was going to be this river spirit named Old Man River voiced by Gregory Peck, but he declined feeling the story needed a maternal figure to Pocahontas' character.
    While I can definitely see where he was coming from, a part of me really wants to see the version of the film with Old Man River instead.

    Adding to your discussion regarding the production history, Pocahontas was seen by those like Katzenberg as the next big hit while The Lion King was just seen as something of a "B-picture". Ultimately, The Lion King wound up being the highest grossing animated film at the time and is still beloved to this day, while Pocahontas only did modestly at the time and has... not held up very well, to say the least. Funny how history works out, doesn't it?

    I wouldn’t even want a live action Black Cauldron, I’d take another go at an animated film. When you read the books, you realize Disney, if they allowed themselves to go Hunchback levels of dark, could probably pull them off in adaptation. I remember reading about the barbaric warrior the Horned King and there’s a scene where he and his army delight in burning their enemies in wicker baskets, and it conjured up images of Disney’s Sleepy Hollow or the darker moments in Fantasia.
    Yeah screw that generic evil lord character, Book Horned King is terrifying

    • @mattammarofficial
      @mattammarofficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Matt Ammar The forest is the big oof of a cutdown for me. It’s like a journey over many days where Taran meets his hero who turns out to be an old man, and it teaches him some respect and starts some character growth of him learning to value his allies and realize he’s not some great warrior yet. All the while the Horned King’s army are hunting them along with the undead Cauldron Born(The villain already has the cauldron in the book, he’s just trying to win the war now.) and I just couldn’t wait to see this dark imagery and character development in the movie.
      How did that go again?
      Gurgi: I’m Gurgi!
      Taran: I don’t like you, Gurgi.
      Gurgi: Oh by the way, your pig went that way!
      End scene!

    As a person with European and native American heritage, and have lived and been all over Virginia, this movie offends on all sides.
    And the terrain of coastal VA is very not accurate at all (where are these massive 30 ft. drop waterfalls and rocky terrain??) . and that alone shows that Disney did not do any deep historical research for Pocahontas.
    Also Matt that ending song was FIRE.

    • @mattammarofficial
      @mattammarofficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I’m surprised. Even when Disney made something bad, bizarre, or problematic, they AT THE VERY LEAST did a slight modicum of research. On July 3, 1863, a group of American Indians from various tribes, led by a Sioux shaman known as "Raven," performed a ritual in an effort to drive out the European settlers. This ritual created a conduit to a spiritual realm populated by powerful malicious entities known as the "Reckoners." fun fact - i never saw pocahontas in theaters when i was a kid...bc it was sold out when we went to the theater, so my mom got tickets for the three of us, her, me (5), and my brother (8), for "south park: bigger, longer and uncut" instead.
    now, i'm not a current fan of south park currently per se, but tbh, that was probably a better choice for young minds, tbh...absolutely a better musical, too.

    • @delnacs8595
      @delnacs8595 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also ftr, my mom already knew that the movie was going to be racist and revisionist as fuck. (the disney one, not the south park one, which one doesn't get to say every day. like she knew that south park was going to be offensive, but at least it was honest about being offensive, yk). it's a modern myth that like, idk...white people didn't know racism existed until sometime past the mid-'90s, and were entirely uneducated about america's violent history of subjugation and so on? that is NOT the case. stuff like this was bad then too, and everyone knew it was bad then too, come now.
      and i hate to admit to being a part of one of your main problems in your critique here but tbh.......i'm pretty sure when i was five, i mostly wanted to see this movie and begged my mom to take us to see the movie bc of the cute raccoon character. like listen, i was five and i loved raccoons and cartoons, and the animation of the raccoon as a character from trailer bits of it were very cute! I mean I'm 30 now and i still love raccoons and animation, but...hmm, in retrospect, that's not enough to sustain a movie, is it....

    • @mattammarofficial
      @mattammarofficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut isn’t just a better musical than Pocahontas, it might be one of the best animated musicals of the 90’s! I’m still a pretty avid South Park watcher (I’ve been watching since 1997, which may be a problem haha.)
      I find it so surprising that people think the race issues and the problems with revisionist films and history is a recent thing, but I have heard that before. I think we really just need to find a way to all admit it’s an issue, and, instead of fighting and seeking vengeance, find a common ground, and learn to rejoice in what makes each other different.
      Also, no shame in finding raccoons cute. I used to watch anything with penguins in it for the same reason. And don’t get me started about Pokémon... 🤣

      You can't have your cake and eat it. If you want to do a more mature and serious story, adding some comic relief isn't inherently bad or inappropriate, but it needs to be more subtle and restrained, because wacky animal hijinks and race wars obviously aren't things that gel with each other. That's why the gargoyles in Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame are so disliked, because they don't fit with the general tone of the film.

    A note about the Native American chanting at the beginning: a lot of Native American singing involves heavy use of vocables, or syllables that have no intrinsic meaning but fit the mood of the chant and song. I’m not entirely certain that the Powhatan did this practice, but it’s not too uncommon for entire songs to be made up of vocables.

    Hey, Matt! I have a really cool idea for a possible video essay you could do on the first Kung Fu Panda movie. You could touch on its themes of an unlikely hero overcoming adversity, of how parents and ambition can effect us, and the importance of being yourself. I’d love to see that!

      Am I the only one who actually wants Mel Gibson’s voice in Kung Fu Panda 3 sequels at some point (I’m thinking he might as well be a dragon if Kung Fu Panda not only has the Dragon Warrior aka Po, but also an actual dragon as well who looks like he came from a Chris Sanders film like How to Train Your Dragon (or Lilo & Stitch). Then again, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon are both 2010s DreamWorks trilogies)

    My fiance is of the mohawk tribe. She doesnt find this movie particularly offensive as she treats this as a completely separate film from the real people. Only thing in common they have is the names. The things that truly bothered her were Pocahontas' immediate attraction to John. In real life, back then a woman from her tribe or any other would flee on sight especially if the man was armed. Another is Pocahontas immediately started speaking English after touching john. My fiance thought this was dumb because they still could connect even through the language barrier. The movie in her eyes would have been better if she never learned John's language and instead fell for him through his actions and spending time with him. Another thing was Kokuum having no screentime. My fiance pointed out that a native woman back then choosing a white man over her own is almost unheard of (at least in her tribe). Kokuum didnt have any positive or negative qualities really shown on WHY pocahontas chose John over him. Show that Kokuum means well and would be a good husband, but have flaws like hes too controlling or has anger issues. It would have made his demise more impactful as well. And his flaw of being "too serious" is actually a genuine stereotype that disney (hopefully) overlooked. My fiance's make family members are often stoic and have a "resting b" face. But thats literally how they're raised. To be calmer and more reserved, especially back then when hunting was a necessity. Kokuum has the literal default personality of a native man. She never found this movie truly offensive but she understands why so many are ticked at this movie. But she also doesnt appreciate how Disney is trying to bury this movie. Native people arent represented much in media and having a Native disney princess is a huge win for her people. For all the movie's flaws it should be looked at as a part of Disney's history

      @mattammarofficial  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m sorry for the late reply, but thank you so much for yours and your wife’s input! I completely agree that this movie shouldn’t be buried, and that’s sadly a common practice with Disney; to bury things that have once offended. I’m not saying one shouldn’t be offended by them, but I think it’s wrong to censor and bury art, especially when we can learn from past mistakes.

    One has to wonder why Disney even bothered to name this movie Pocahontas? Beyond lifting some names and the general setting of Jamestown, Virginia, this movie has next to nothing to do with the actual story of Pocahontas, John Smith, Ratcliff, etc. Really, they should have just made this an original movie about a Romeo and Juliet-style love story between a white guy and an indigenous woman (which the movie essentially is), because the Pocahontas connotations really add nothing to the movie, all they really did was invite even more controversy than the standard whitewashed retelling of the founding of America was bound to get in the mid 90s.

    • @mattammarofficial
      @mattammarofficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, I get their side too. They wanted to make a historical film. But you’re 100% right, that just changing everything and making stuff up just invited controversy. I still think they could’ve made a lot of it work, but this ain’t it.

    • @daliborjovanovic510
      @daliborjovanovic510 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattammarofficial I would cite something like Balto or Don Bluth's Anastasia as much better examples of "historical films", as, while they too took plenty of liberties, they also took more inspiration from the actual historical events (and in the latter's case, the Anna Anderson story as well). So while they are only loosely based on true stories, those connotations with said stories are stronger and feel more relevant to the plot, while Pocahontas, on the other hand, is essentially just Romeo and Juliet but with native Americans and white settlers. And this might just be me, but the fact that our romantic leads here are based on people who met each other as a preteen girl and pudgy middle-aged beardo is really.....off-putting XD

    Another funny and edgy review destroying a sacred cow of a Disney movie! Having some Mohawk and Abenaki blood in my family on my father's side, I was always pissed off by the way this film sugarcoated history and presented the story of Matoaka; which ended in tragedy in real life, as a sort of charming fairy tale. And your chihuahua was adorable, even as she was talking in Alex Jones soundbites. The scene with Pocahontas jumping into the World Trade Center was just cringey in a bad way, it'll always be too soon. If I could suggest another bad movie to review I would say one of the Disney Direct-to-DVD sequels, like Cinderella 3 a Twist in Time. It’s like Back to The Future 2, but with a Disney Princess badass and magic.
    I watched the “Live Action” Lion King and it didn’t even have half of the emotional impact that the original did. While I can appreciate some of the new ideas (which are incredibly few and far between) it was basically trying to bank of nostalgia. At least with The Jungle Book live action movie, there were some new ideas, and it had a different ending. I also saw half of the Live Action Beauty and the Beast but I couldn’t finish it after Lefou’s song about Gaston because it wasn’t fun or as funny since the live action cannot be as expressive or impressive as the animated version. I personally would want to see a live action Hunchback of Norte Dame and they could use practical effects instead of god awful CGI.

    Something else inaccurate, that's not how beavers use their tails. And that some hippy dippy "understanding" of animals does jack shit if you interact with a mama bear's cub. As a tiny nerd seeing this in the theatre, that had me harrumphing lol. This isn't the only time Disney was lazy and noncommittal with the indigenous music, the tribal music in Brother Bear is performed by Bulgarian singers as opposed to First Nations. Although maybe after Pocahontas it was difficult to find a First Nations choir willing to be in an animated Disney film.
    I recommend a documentary called Reel Injun. A few minutes of it are devoted to this shitshow of a movie and they even bring up how most Native Americans hate it and what it represents from Disney (merch and fetishizing)... as well as the irony that someone like Russel Means voiced the chief.

    Okay, I love this review, but I do have some minor criticism. The South Park movie came out four years after Pocahontas, so it does feel a little unfair to compare both films regarding musical bar raising (that sounded terrible at the end, my bad). Beauty and Aladdin though? 100% valid.
    Also, to those who have been living under a rock and don't know the basics of distinguishable art styles, your wording might end up leading them into thinking South Park is a Disney movie. Actually scratch that, A South Park movie by Disney sounds awesome. :D

    Mine Mine Mine is totally the most underrated Disney villain's song. It isn't nearly as good as Hellfire (the best villain song EVER, Disney or otherwise), or Be Prepared, but it is a cool song and deserves more recognition.

    The whole revisionist thing I think started to get a lot of flak because of Oliver Stone's movie about the 60's band The Doors (also my all time favorite band.) They had so much wrong about Jim Morrison that it caused people to not trust movies with a revisionist tale and it gave some people a bad impression on Jim or even the band as a whole. Keyboardist Ray Manzarek had a serious problem with that movie mainly on how they show Jim as a drunk ass clown and a sociopath that did not show a shed of happy moments. They also had other things wrong, grossly exaggerated or even added nonsense that either never happened or has no evidence of them occurring.

    • @mattammarofficial
      @mattammarofficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't seen the Doors, yet I know Oliver Stone is weirdly known for revising history when it's not necessary. I've heard to avoid that movie, but I wanna see it, just for Kyle Maclachlan.

And mickey need to entertain people as long as it give him money back. I always type it here the comment. So i will do a quick one.
    Pixar: mickey why are we selling pocahontas merchandise?
    Mickey: because these things are selling like hot cakes. Every little girl is buying these things.
    Pixar: Mickey you are aware that pocahontas was 10 years old...
    Mickey cuts Pixar off mid sentence.
    Mickey: i don't care about history silly goose. All i care about is making movie and merchandise and seeing the cash come to PAPA!!!!
    Pixar: i didn't like how you said papa there....

      *Two-hundredth*
      This is how “SJWs” (or, a more accurate term: “misandrists/anti-whites”) would react to people praising Disney Renaissance films (over their remakes) that are not Pocahontas: OMG THEY WORKED SO HARD ON THIS MOVIE FRANCHISE (Me: They’re referring to Pocahontas 1995)!!!!!! YOU COLONIZERS HATE THIS MOVIE BECAUSE ARE SO MEAN TO INDIANS (Me: They don’t mean actual Indians, or in their case, “Southeast Asians”. They mean Indigenous people even though they know better!)!!!!!
      But you know, while we do think Pocahontas is too flawed to be one of Disney’s best series (for all the reasons you, Matt AniMat, pointed out), there is a healthy side of the fandom (which might even be the majority of the likes of the original movie) that likes it as a guilty pleasure (where even if they acknowledge that it’s not perfect, they like it more because they grew up with it than the fact that they think it’s objectively good and that you are an evilly traditional white man if you think it’s mediocre or worse) that is much more tolerable than the toxic side of the duokogy’s fandom that acts like we hate people of colour and teenage woman (and are just misogynistic in general) if we don’t like movies that don’t have the best representation of people of colour (LOOKING AT YOU, THE BIRTH OF A NATION!!!!! And I don’t mean the film about Nat Turner that came directly a century later in our time, I mean the 1915 version that portrays women as helpless whiners and black people as murderers with super outdated accents like in American minstrel shows of the 19th Century).

    • @mattammarofficial
      @mattammarofficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d say about 50/50. They’re definitely going to make it, that I have no doubt. But I’m uncertain as to whether or not they will learn from their mistakes, or just make the same movie again. It’s hard to tell with these remakes. 😆
