This is why Mariah will always be my favorite. Belters are a dime a dozen, but Mariah's ability to do razor-sharp, complex riffs is once in a generation.
"Over " has a very fast vibrato to it, that no singer i've heard trying to do that run actually does! Which make the run even more outstanding! If you don't sing the vibrato, the run is easier.
lol Mariah hits F5, Eb5s, D5s, C#5s, C5s, Bb4s and G#4s in this run over and over again with resonance. Too hard of a run lol I hope you'll do Butterfly run (which is even faster lmao!) someday xD
The difficulty is the belted notes with much complexity, unlike other runs & riffs which repeat similar notes over and over again. Not about the speed but complexity & the power band behind.
I love how she breaks it down but let's be real it isn't easy. Completely missed the emotion and the powerful bluesy notes at the end. And the turn at the beginning. It really is the most inventive riff I've heard from mariah. But I'm just a listener and you guys are the pros so what do I know. ;)
+Christopher Davis a listener counts, since you are able to differentiate the one with emotion and soul from the one with out it! that's the clear example of it. I second your opinion.
The point of BDTR is less having them learn it exactly like the singer, but rather teaching how to sing the riff itself and letting the person do what they want with it. The girl in the video now knows enough that she can do the rest of the work herself if she wants to. It’ll take much more practice to be able to sing it exactly like Mariah
She was breaking down and teaching the riff. Not how to apply emotion to it. She was only doing the technical part here. The singer can then add his/her flavour and personal touch then, whensinging the whole song.
You are super talented!!! You are a guru and your explanations are impeccable! Genius! In any case I see how many talented people can easily sing superhard Beyoncè's runs, or Jasmine's or Brandy's, etc (btw I do looove all of them!) but Mariah is the only one that is impossible to replicate with same notes + same speed + same flawless effortless singing + same tone + same compression + same naturalness! She is the greatest singer ever, often imitated, never duplicated!🙌🙌
On the third section you must go again with "oooooo" and the fourth with "veeeer"... Over is said twice. This video is amazing, you can learn it very easily. Thanks.
Genuinely think this is one of the best series ideas. Not only is it really helpful in the way that it makes everything seem singable, but also it's funny as well! Brilliant!! Natalie, you're the best.
Very good video, but Mariah did it in a very full chest voice, and you both hit it like in head voice (which is for a woman), but anyway the riff sounds almost the same.
I wouldn't call that riff easy in anyway lol but you guys broke it down well. Mariah' did it iin a very chesty voice, so it's almost impossible. But nice breakdown
Wow ... Natalie i applaud you . This is the "missing link" in music study. Years ago i tried so hard to find instruction on this. I was told that it was "undefinable" , "unteachable" and that that technically the notes were "in the cracks" You do an incredible job "Breakn It Down" and i love your voice. And ya know ... I always think ... One More Wonderful Gift from Black America ✨
Natalie OMG I just sang along with you guys and was able to do it THREE TIMES! First time ever attempting rifts! Thank you so so so much you're an amazing teacher!
Excellent videos breaking down the riffs. I love Mariah, I've always thought she sang "over" twice in this riff. I love your formulas though! 'Oh 12345 1234 / 1234 / da ra ra ra da' for the "Over-OooO-Over" is amazing. Thanks for teaching us!
Hey Natalie! I really liked the two videos you posted on your channel. Great idea! When will you do the next ones? Can we suggest some riffs too? Regards from Brasil :-)
I really like what you're doing here...and I just wanna have a beer with you in the city sometime. You have that nurturing attitude that disarms whatever "student" you're working with. Nice job.
Interesting concept. You miss the grupetto (or 'turn' as Americans like to call it I think) in what you call the first 'section', and I don't think that you've nailed the fourth 'section' either to how Mariah sings it.
+jmele300 not only that its more soulful and she pronounce different vowels making it harder which she didn't do here she stayed with A since is the easiest to sing in.
Well I wasn’t implying they are the only ones, but they are best commercially successful artist that have clear coloratura skills to a high level, with the musical creativity and intelligence to come up with some of the most interesting & original melisma’s .
With Mariah and Beyonce probably being the best pop singers with coloratura abilities, their entire discography is full of complex vocal lines and melismas, that would make great videos like this for you to break down :)
Those videos are AMAZING, but could you to do LOW soulful riffs, and not just high-pitched ones? I LOVE those Christina Aguilera riffs that start way up and end waaay down which makes the end of it sound so soulful. I'm not as big a fan of the high riffs. But still your vids are just great, thks for them!
Very nicely explained lol I'm so trying this riff 1 octave down XD Can you explain more Mariah riffs such as the amazing riff from Can't take that away
Mariah’s material requires people to study it to understand it
Imagine, the amount of effort laid out to grasp the run. And Mariah just came up with it. GENIUS.
This is why Mariah will always be my favorite. Belters are a dime a dozen, but Mariah's ability to do razor-sharp, complex riffs is once in a generation.
Damn this riff! Mariah belted it so naturally too, incredible! Girls you're incredible too :).
"Over " has a very fast vibrato to it, that no singer i've heard trying to do that run actually does! Which make the run even more outstanding! If you don't sing the vibrato, the run is easier.
The transitions as well. I've never heard anyone else do it as smoothly as Mariah.
crazy!
willam belli LOL i saw your ig post and came back to watch this video
wtf willam what are you doing here???!

@@flyer53act which butterfly run ?

Love how the girl got it so quickly, let's face it lambs, we can't do it ever LOL
I'm trying 🤣
We can:)
I attempt these vocals and feel like my neighbors are going to call the police thinking I’m torturing animals 😅
@@MariahIsSkinnyFuckBlueLives LMAO at your comment and username 🤣

Not even ten minutes and I learned something I've been listening to for 20 years 🤩🤩🤩
I love this riff so much. It's just so much musicality in one brief moment of a song.
I love how she breaks it down but let's be real it isn't easy. Completely missed the emotion and the powerful bluesy notes at the end. And the turn at the beginning. It really is the most inventive riff I've heard from mariah. But I'm just a listener and you guys are the pros so what do I know. ;)

@@theseeker2586 she didn't teach the vowel modification on the riff... It's a part of the riff.... So it wasn't that good
@@igorvilela3243 agreed. Mariah did an awesome job on the vowel modifications which is why the riff turned out the way it is.
Mariah's creation is so amazing
Ok, she did same notes but the vowels should be different per note. "ova-a-a-a, a-a-a, u-u-u-u-u, wo-a-a-a-ah"
Jenno Ranin When she first started these vids, she didn't care for vowels but in the newer ones, she does.
Right, the sounds Mariah makes is what makes it so much more phenomenal than just the notes themselves...oooovaaaaahhawwwwaaaooooooaaaar 💚

please do Mariah Carey's Butterfly, Destiny's Child's Emotion, and Beyonce's I Care
Totally agree with Butterfly, but DC Emotion isn't easy?
I have the beginning and the end... the middle came out anyway it wanted too... but thanks you you showing me how to count the numbers it’s Perfect.

Thanks for sharing this, Natalie!
You are amazing! =D
I can't do this riffed, I'm so emotional :/
She sounds like a song bird I'm crying
I can't believe how easy this really is once you break it down!! Thank you so much for this video
this video is iconic

man I've been looking for this forever
Loving this series. You are a really great teacher.
can you do mariah careys riff on over the rainbow? the one that says blue birds flyyyyyYYYYyyyyyy
Very good video, but Mariah did it in a very full chest voice, and you both hit it like in head voice (which is for a woman), but anyway the riff sounds almost the same.
Full chest voice? LMAO! There isn't full chest voice higher than f4 .-. everything above is mixed voice.
KarinMozina I was talking to op, I understand what you said :)
Real Voice Yea but their mix was very heady whereas Mariah's is more chesty.

Is not about the register...

"pretty cosette, she is a pretty cosette!!"

Wow I'm so glad I stumbled across this channel, for real I learned more from this video than from watching four other videos about how to riff
I love that you know Chris Dilley. He's so talented and I'd love to get vocal lessons once I move to NY. P.S. You're amazing! :)
Thank you Natalie! You are truly Awesome!! LOVE YOUR VOICE AND YOUR PERSONALITY. LOVE TO SING WITH YOU SOMEDAY!!
You need to meet Colleen Ballinger aka Miranda sings, aka Pchsyo Soprano
Natalie Weiss has a video with Miranda somewhere. Miranda gave her a free singing lesson. :)

Hey Natalie - thanks for the shout out! This riff always makes me want Taco Bell, haha. Love this series - keep em coming! xo Chris
OMG it's so easy after breaking down, thanks a lot
As soon as she said this song I knew it was this part that I studied as a kid lol
Omggg . I was like that name's familiar ... I met her @ a Les Mis Production a while ago ! Aahh lol love both u guys !
Mariah is NOT human!!!
you didn't break it down, you simplify it! which is good enough. but the original one has more complexity and soul to it. nice job tho
She actually did break it down. There is no more complexity to it. I think you mean that Mariah's tone is like none other, which I totally agree with.
+jmele300 not only that its more soulful and she pronounce different vowels making it harder which she didn't do here she stayed with A since is the easiest to sing in.
+Rigel Mc this is breaking down the riff not breaking down the soul
Rolling Apples thank you for clearing that out, I still think she simplify it.
Well as long as the singer gets it and is able to do it, I don't see a problem. I still can't get it so I pretty much quit at this point lol
Natalie, This is so exciting. Now, I need you to break down a run from Karen Clark-Sheard and the other Clark Sisters.
Well I wasn’t implying they are the only ones, but they are best commercially successful artist that have clear coloratura skills to a high level, with the musical creativity and intelligence to come up with some of the most interesting & original melisma’s .

Mariah actually enunciates the "Over" twice like "Ove~~~r over!" So if don't enunciate the word "over" twice, you're not doing it completely right. 😁
Jersey girls are always the best singers! Cheers Nat...you're great!!
i saw the les mis tour sign at starbucks.. i just found out about natalie a couple days ago.. omg i should've went :(
