as a guy who has worked in the industry years back and out of practice, this is one of the best videos I've seen in a long time. The best thing about it is your explanations on why you do things and the process. kudos to you.
amzn.to/2TTxTmU After shooting this video, I found a kit for ~$35 to install new cables. I have no experience with this kit, but I want give you guys another option. The OEM one is ~$200
That pushing the window on the plastic trick is so cool! I more than once fought the plastic pins, knocking them into the door having to take it all apart again!
Great vid, the only thing missing was telling how to re-teach the car the new full up/down window position so it doesn't do the anti-pinch action (which my B5.5 did). Hold the window down button until the window reaches the bottom, and keep holding for at least 3 seconds longer. Do the same all the way up, plus 3 seconds longer. It teaches the CCM the new full down and up position of the regulator.
Thanks Charles, I saw plenty of vids that told me how to remove the door panel, but none on how to remove the inner panel and most importantly the pin arrangement for the window glass. Mine was a 2012 Tiguan and this showed clearly what I needed. Perfect thanks!
Best to reseal the lower half of that metal carrier panel before re-installation, otherwise you unlock the Passat Pool Party feature. Great video, clever workarounds, and very clear, concise commentary as always.
I went through this JUST to get to and clean the automatic lock solenoid that quit working some years back (Hint: A follow up video on fixting that woud be awesome here !) THis was a good reminder of things I could have done differently - specifically with that window pin (groan - had I known installing it in the window and engaging the clip later would have saved me hours or agony , but alas this was WAY before You-Tube.) A follow up video of that would be awesome. Awesome job.
Thanks a bunch Charles! my first time doing a door lock actuator on a Passat and Identifix was worthless with instructions. The window pin trick was a life saver.
First and best explanation on unlatching the door release cable! I have been careful and still broken the tiny plastic tab that keeps this cable hook in place. Major pain replacing and extra expense!
Great vid - came in really handy for swapping a regulator in a mk7 golf. Especially the tip to insert the nylon spreader pins first - and push the window into the regulator. Worked perfectly! Cheers
Unfortunately I found this video *after* I just repaired both sides of my 2001 Jetta Wagon. The A1A video shows installing the pins through that little regulator access door. It cannot be done that way, or if it can, it means your pins are too loose. I was so frustrated I even created my own how-to video once I figured it out, but my video is far inferior to this one. Outstanding, Charles! Needless to say I am a subscriber now.
Holy mother of crap I wished I saw this before going to the junk yard last week! I basically had to caveman a regulator out because I didn't bring something to drill out the speaker and didn't know exactly how to take off the nylon bushing. Very good tutorial, Charles.
Tackled my window regulator on the front passenger side on my 2012 Fusion last summer. The amount of rivets used on it was insane. I replaced the rivets with 1/4 inch nuts and bolts so if it ever goes again it'll make disassembly less of a night mare. Wish you would have made this sooner as I had to teach myself but this video serves as great reinforcement!
I saw the video and thought "what could be so difficult about changing a window regulator? I did it to my 2009 Fiesta and it was so simple...", then I watched the video and now I got it... Nice tip, good material, thanks!
Massively helpful video Humble, and thank you for a brilliant detailed how to. Did my driver side rear (UK car) today as it was also leaking water so fitted a nice thick bead of butyl putty around the edge of the ally panel. The plastic pin hack worked perfectly....when I think back 10 years ago on the same car....man the struggle was real! Passenger side next for same pin that fell out a month ago....not leaking water that side but will do the butyl putty on that side anyways. Thanks again. Liked! Long live the 1.9 AWX....for the win.
Well first a local mechanic said we needed a different window (it wouldn't close all the way. Then the glass company said the window is fine, it's a mechanical issue. So we go to Volkswagen reluctantly to once and for all fix the problem. They kept it one hour, charged $80.00 and said it needs a new regulator which they didn't have in stock) gave me an estimate for $680.00, $180. parts, $400 LABOR. So I thought wait a minute how hard can this be? I watched THIS VIDEO and ordered a $165.00 regulator from VW. Today I went out to prepare for the operation, took the panel off and looked around and lo and behold, the white nylon piece was just lying in the bottom of the door! I came in and watched THIS VIDEO again and fixed it without a "new regulator". Thanks for this.
Bought a Haynes manual for my 2013 Gti, which was absolutely useless on this occasion, black and white pictures (outdated) with limited info for changing the regulator..I even bought the recommended tools to carry out the job which was a waste of money - if only I found this tutorial before hand....8 yrs on and VW are still using the same glass pins/dowels and man was mine a pain in the...kudos to this clip I got it sorted, getting the pin out was troublesome but installation was a breeze which was mostly to your pin installation trick.
Thanks for this. Your tip on reinstalling the two part white dowel into the window first worked perfectly. I had my doubts, especially as I had broken one of the guide lugs off the window carrier, but it still worked!
Perfect timing brother! I was just about to do the same to the drivers side rear door on the W8!!! Thank you for the fantastic video! Your the BEST bro!
Karma is real my friend!!! Today I was on the receiving end, when one of our patients father’s gave me his R32 poster!!! I was very happy to give you mine...but I’m going to fame this one like you did! Good vibes brother!
@@HumbleMechanic I have a '04, 2.8L, 4Motion wagon. It has a kickass Monsoon double din. I think 200watts. To work with Steering stereo controls?? Secondly, will an after market double din mess with the Ross Tech diagnostic system I have?
I want to know the same thing. I bought the same metal frame replacement kit as shown here by Humble Mechanic and it DID NOT come with a new plastic pin part. So now what do I do? Where do I get a new one?
Hey Charles I have watched a lot of tour videos and you saved me a ton of money because of them. I do have a question about the window motor. My front passenger side window regulator is broke. The window is stuck up but the motor still works. How do I get the glass down to get to the 10mm bolt that holds the glass to the track. Hope to hear from you soon thanks
Great description, those two plastic rivets that you punched out at the end were the missing part for me. My 06 Golf TDI has 3 of them, and in every single other video they've already been punched out and so nobody ever mentions them. Thank you.
You could also use the power to get the regulator bracket locked into the window instead of pushing it down, just make sure the glass is lined up. Thanks for another great video👍
I've been able to repair broken OEM door panel clips with a little heat from a soldering iron to melt back together, or replacements are readily available online.
Thank you. In my case I had to replace also the wires and plastic that holds the window. The problem was the wires that pulls the window were not the exactly right size. I figured out how to deal with this. I just made a knot in the wire just where the wire comes out from the plastic window holder (that's the only place to do the knot). Than it was nice and perfectly snug.

The driver's side is the where all the bad shit happens usually. It gets used the most. I was changing mine and sure enough the door handle cable plastic piece broke off, then the lock rod got stuck .. it was stupid, the whole thing was coming apart under my hands
Hi. Great video. My problem is in a 03 Jetta. I was putting everything back together but the lock release rod came off the door module. I can’t find a way to put it back on. My question is: do I need to take the door module off to insert the rod? Thank you in advance
at 9:00 Don't need to remove those rivets before remove the carrier panel, I remove the carrier panel with the door lock all at once,on rear door that fitted with 1/4 widow or wagon, first you need to remove the short window's rail that fit front of the door lock, then remove the lock bolts and then you can remove the all out a little to easy remove the cable that from the outer handle to the door lock ,then can out at once.some model need to remove the outer door handle at once. after out ,then can remove and install the rivets easy., front door is easy because no rail there,, Hope this help!
When drilling out rivets I've found it easier to punch the pin out of the rivet first. I also like to clean the inside bottom of door and check for and clean any weep holes.
@@HumbleMechanic another VW quirk. Never had problems with oem rivets on other vehicles. Leave it to VW. That's alot of wasted material with all that metal that goes away as well. You'd think they would just make the regulator replaceable. Recycle fund for your beverage of choice. Scrap metal adds up.:)
i remember the first time how I put the window pins back, i put the small pin into the the large pin a little to made the large pin open a little be, then put the pins into the hole, because the large pin a little open, so it won't drop all the way, and then I hammer the small pin in, to lock it, I found your way the second time I did.

This video helps out a lot, I just got one question if I wanna remove the entire panel without removing any components, is it possible assuming the window is out of the way ?
Hello HumbleMechanic! Love your content , a lot to learn! Regarding the clip I have a problem, hope you are able to offer me an advice!!! My rear windows, have the same problem: both windows are not aligning correctly , after half of the distance is ride by the windows, they tend to tilt/drop to the rear and the pinching protection , is preventing the windows to reach the final UP/closed position!!!! What could be wrong?

You don't have to drill out the rivets for the speakers, you can leave it joined to the ally panel. The speaker comes out attached to the ally panel. All you have to do is unplug the connector.
R/R window motor problem? When closing the window with a 'one-touch' press of the switch - right when it rolls completely up and then encounters resistance from 'topping-out' - the motor cycles the window right back into open position and goes all the way down...which thens ends with a 'thunk' sound. If I'm 'careful' I can keep it from doing that if I 'nurse' the window closed in 'bursts' of the switch. Seems like two problems?
@@HumbleMechanic they only come with the entire inner door skin and related parts I think. I'm going to seal the lower portion of mine with 3M marine sealant.
I feel like window regulator problems for MK3-4 cars replaced the door handle problems of the MK1-2. You know it was going to break as some point so get used to fixing it.
Hey Charles, I'm a new tech and I have a question about something I'm kinda struggling with about how to deal with on the fly. I work in a body shop (contex). What is the process you go through when you run into a situation that isn't standard situation let's say. Maybe the car has been repaired before and the precious shop didn't fix it right, or there is some unforeseen damage. What process to do use as a tech as far as taking notes, pictures, how to approach the job, do you repair it or not?
On my 2003 Passat, I noticed water coming inside on the footwell carpet. It appears to be coming from the door when it snows and I park the car outside for 4-5 hours. Does the regulator need to have a gasket or seal on its edge all around? I’m wondering if the reason could be a worn seal around the regulator.

Oh no! Are they still available?
@@HumbleMechanic they only come with the entire inner door skin and related parts I think. I'm going to seal the lower portion of mine with 3M marine sealant.
When you say 'our' it sounds like a pirates arrr :D
Yarrrrr matey 😂
I feel like window regulator problems for MK3-4 cars replaced the door handle problems of the MK1-2. You know it was going to break as some point so get used to fixing it.
can i ask why you have to remove the speaker ?
awesome video thanks
You have to swap it to the new regulator
Hey Charles, I'm a new tech and I have a question about something I'm kinda struggling with about how to deal with on the fly. I work in a body shop (contex). What is the process you go through when you run into a situation that isn't standard situation let's say. Maybe the car has been repaired before and the precious shop didn't fix it right, or there is some unforeseen damage. What process to do use as a tech as far as taking notes, pictures, how to approach the job, do you repair it or not?
I missed where you put the pin back in. It does not show that in the video. Do you have a video that shows that?
On my 2003 Passat, I noticed water coming inside on the footwell carpet. It appears to be coming from the door when it snows and I park the car outside for 4-5 hours. Does the regulator need to have a gasket or seal on its edge all around? I’m wondering if the reason could be a worn seal around the regulator.
Thank you So much
Your instruction videos are always fantastic! What would you use to clean and grease the window channels?
Glass cleaner is the best for both
