Oldest ground is the 'little brother' hallam fc which is at crosspool, sheffield. Hell of a slope...

The oldest in the Football League!
There were already 12 organised clubs playing in Sheffield before Notts County were formed. Sheffield is the birthplace of modern day competitive football, the 1st ever football culture, with over 50 clubs by the mid 1870's playing competitive league and cup tournament football with paying customers before even the FA cup started. The Sheffield tournements were the inspiration behind the FA cup. A deligate from Sheffield were involved in the rules with many of the Sheffield rules eventually being amalgamated into the FA rules. A Sheffield factory even provided London with the 1st ever FA cup, which was eventually stolen and never found, rumours are it was melted down and forged into coins.
Any football fans bucket list should include seeing a game featuring Sheffield FC

I believe that tying together your historical series with the Tactics series would make a very interesting series; English Emigrant Coaches such as Vic Buckingham, Jimmy Hogan, George Raynor, Fred Spiksley, and why they had to move abroad to implement the tactical innovations that they wanted to.

I was born and bred 100 yards from Hallam F.C the oldest football ground in the world!...I used to go every home game, my dad was on the committee and I have seen so many pro players and managers who came to train and scout!..Hallam F.C is still going!..Sheffield has the oldest club and ground in the world!..you want any information about Hallam F.C let me know!..

Oldest Amature club yes, but professional is Notts County. You should do a video with how much Football history has come out of Nottingham, goal nets, shin pads, whistles, the kits to different clubs. etc

Didn't realise that Olive Grove was their original home. The Wednesday F.C. played there before moving to Owlerton (aka Hillsborough) and changing their name.

Before formalisation of the rules which formed into two camps, Association and Rugby, there were many rules. Many clubs had their own rules with visiting teams having to play to their rules. The game we know and play is *Association football,* paying to Association rules laid down in 1863, with critical amendments soon after. The rules of the Rugby Football Union were laid down in 1871.
Many sports clubs are quite old, but when they started to play Association Football is the date of their founding as a *football club.* An example is Everton, who were founded in 1878 as football club, but older as a cricket club. _Liverpool Football Club,_ from 1857, not Liverpool Athletic Football Club in the Premier League, is a rugby club, never having played Association rules - but named a _football_ club. So a name is meaningless. It is when a club started to play Association rules, when no contact with the ball from any art of the arm was introduced, not what they played previously. Liverpool Football Club could adopt the Association Football rules next season. They would be a football club from 2023, however a 165 year old sports club.
There were originally 11 members of the Football Association playing to Association rules in 1863. Sheffield FC was *not* one of them, as they were playing to different rules, the Sheffield rules. Sheffield FC joined the Football Association soon after its foundation in 1863, not being a founding member, playing to Association rules dropping the Sheffield rules. There is only one club still in existence of the original 11 Association football clubs, that is _Civil Service FC._ *_Civil Service FC_* *is the oldest Association Football club in the world.* Sheffield FC is the oldest *open* football club in the world still in existence playing to Association rules. Open, is open to anyone to play not having to be a member of an institution. _Liverpool Football Club_ is the oldest *open* club playing to the 1871 Laws of the Rugby Football Union.
There are many _oldest_ professional _Association_ clubs. The FA only allowed professionalism in 1885. So any club that went pro' when rules were changed is one of the joint oldest professional clubs, of which there many. Notts County and Everton are amongst them.
A club only became a _football club_ when adopting association rules and that means joining the FA. There is also vagary in that some clubs played to association rules but were not official members of the FA. When a club enters an FA approved competition (challenge or league, amateur or professional) that club then becomes a football club playing to Association rules.
Notts County claim a record. That they are the oldest _current professional club_ that has played association rules the longest whether as amateur or professional.
So, we have these firsts:
*1)* Civil Service FC - oldest Association football club in the world.
*2)* Sheffield FC - oldest _open_ Association football club in the world.
*3)* Notts County - a _current_ professional football club in the world to have played to Association rules the longest.
Many disregard numbers *2)* and *3)* as being pedantic second tier records..
The Sheffield area contributed more to the development of football and it's rules, than any other town or city in the world.
Don't forget Hallam FC deserve a mention also.

Some truth in that for sure. What sets _football_ apart as we know it today is that outfield players cannot touch or hold the ball inside the playing area (no contact with any part of the arm). It is when rules came about that incorporated this that _football_ was formed, setting it clearly apart from other rules. That was when the Football Association (the London rules) incorporated that within its rules - Its initial 1863 rules did not have this. The Sheffield rules had the _rough,_ similar to a try in Rugby.

Football clubs in the beginning were a complement to the sport associations which were cricket oriented. Later on, because the football's rep. sky rocketed they were football oriented, you still have sport associations which comprise football, basket, swimming etc.

Probably something to do with ....being crap, ...they used to play in northern counties east league when I was a lad, don't know if that's lower or higher than where they are now

its because when the leagues all started in 1888, they were all going to be professional clubs. Sheffield FC were against the spirit of professionalism, preferring to remain amateur and never showed any interest to enter the new football league. Bet they regret that decision now. Also around that time Sheffield already had "The Wednesday" football club that intended to enter the Football league and a new Sheffield club called "Sheffield United" were formed in 1889 to enter the football league. Sheffield United were formed because Bramall Lane was a large city centre ground used for cricket in the Summer and the owners of the stadium wanted to increase their revenue by inviting a football team to play there during the Winter season, they asked The Wednesday (changed name to Sheffield Wednesday in the 1920's) to play there but couldn't agree terms hence SUFC were born.
