Tillybuddy called it a stretchy cast on for ribbing. She made a long and short video about 9 or 10 years ago. Both videos have good info. The long version shows how the cast on looks in 1x1 and 2x2 ribbing while the short version shows how to speed up the flow. I'm glad to see someone who loves this cast on as much as I do!
Thank goodness for you, I am so grateful for this tutorial. Have been trying all types of stretchy cast ons with no success. This is a big winner.🥰🤗 a huge thank you 🙏
Love this cast on. Just used it for some mittens. You have a lovely voice and calm manner in teaching (both of us can’t freak out when I don’t quite get it at first LOL 😝) You do a wonderful job. Thanks! 💖
Thanks for this really helpful video. I tried this cast on for a pair of top down socks and it’s quite brilliant-very stretchy and very neat at the same time! I’ll be using it again, for sure. As far as the name, it reminds me of Chinese waitress cast on, but the way you do the last twist is easier and much faster. Thanks again!
Just watched your tutorial, thank you so much! I can get frustrated when the instructions go too quickly but, your instructions are terrific. Also, you have such a nice calming voice - how could anyone not enjoy your video!
Very good demonstration- I like how you don't ramble on like so many other videos -and your pacing is just right - not painfully slow like some others! 😄👍🏻😄👍🏻😄👍🏻😄👍🏻
Thank you for the wonderful demonstration and easy to follow instruction! I have been looking for a stretchy cast on for so long and many of them are too many steps or just not good for what I need it for... not only top down socks but top down sweaters as well! I know people will think I am nuts to do a stretchy cast on for sweaters, but I am a tight knitter and every pattern I have done makes the neck to tight for my liking (I like a wide or boat neck and I end up with the neck a little wide, but not as stretchy as I want) enough ramble from me, just wanted to say thank you 😊
Hi Lisa! I'm so glad this cast on can help! If you are on Instagram I'd love to see the neck band on your sweater, I have a similar problem and had never considered this cast on for the neck band! My Instagram is @fiberific
Never seen this cast on before. Great video - concise. So many videos are padded with too much waffling - yours was straight to the point. Don't worry that some people say you've gone too fast, it was just right - I use the pause button or run at 1/2 speed if I'm trying to actually follow along at the same time.
fyi...not all devices have the option to use gear to change speed!!! i know all about it but since computer crashed and am stuck using very old and outdated apps since they (ie utube) wont updated old models anymore i cannot slow it down NOR zoom in too see what is being done! i usually used to speed up tutes btw!!
Extraneous info, but I seem to have lost all the sweatbands I use when doing chores, so I decided to knit some for myself. Of course, they need to be stretchy, which is not easy with cotton yarn! I've never quite caught on with a stretchy cast on before, but today I was determined! Also, I don't like long-tail cast-ons. I normally cast on with a crochet hook. I just watched a video that showed how to do this cast on & it looked complicated. Then I watched your tutorial, and somehow you simplified it! Thank you! In the meantime, I've figured out that I'm going to stitch it width-wise - I was going to cast on 100 sts & do it lengthwise, but I just want to get started! Thank you again for ending my video watching & confusion so I can get a sweatband done already!
Thank you for sharing! I find most videos to drag on and go too slow. When I needed to I was able to rewind and go back to a part I may have missed. This was easy to pick up and I'm well on my way too making this year's winter hat for hubs!
Tried this cast on and elastic looks really great! Could you please let me know if there is the cast-off, which looks the same or very close. It would be very useful for me:-) Thank you for the wonderful video
For a super stretchy bind off, try Jennys Super stretchy bind off also called Jenny’s surprisingly stretchy cast off. Not too tough to do and really does have a very stretchy result.
Hi Guys, So as far as I can tell, This really seems to be a slight variation on Tillybuddies Stretchy cast on! I am not sure if the differences make a difference, but I have been enjoying using it!
I tried this cast-on and it looked great...until I started knitting the first row. Then the spaces between the double stitches widened, every time. Also, it was super difficult to keep from twisting as I was joining in the round. (I originally watched Tillybuddy's video to learn this, but have not had good results.)
Maybe you should just have a Christening for thi cast on method - include the way it goes two by two which is the best identifier. Perfect start for my standard ribbed sock leg, mitts, and tuques.
hi there, thanks for the tutorial. It was so interesting. I'm knitting cotton wraps with large needles, at the moment and struggling to find a neat cast on, and first row. Id like to send a pic of what I mean. how do i get rid of the big loops and make a neater stretchy start. Thanks for any tips
Great video for top down socks for either 2x2 or 1x1. You mention dropping off the first stitch(the slip knot) when you join the round, it will work nicely if you use that stitch (as an extra) to join and drop the stitch.. I've been trying to find a great video that would work nicely without trying to do a tubular cast on since its almost impossible to see your stitches with that cast on method using sock yarn, and this fit the bill!!! You are a life saver, but I don't know the name of it...have you found out yet.....4 yrs later???? LOL
Thanks for the video, what do you do if you want an odd number of stitches to start with? Can you leave the slip knot? Or is there another way to make only half a pair of stitches to start?
Honestly, I have only used pairs, and when I rib, it is generally in an even number, but I can't see why you couldn't leave the slip knot.. other than it changing the 2 x 2 appearance, but I think that would be the case no matter what cast on you choose for an odd number of stitches for a 2 x 2 rib.
Mam from India just I saw your channel excellent way I tried came out well but I want to know after casting what next hv to knit or purl the first row pl share
It looks very similar to the "Chinese Waitress Cast on" introduced in one of Very Pink Knits' videos. In the future it would help us viewers if you use much bigger needles and thicker yarn so as things so up on camera a lot clearer. Also if you can at least in the beginning of showing us the steps, would you make your movements slower? As examples possibly watch the videos from Newstitchaday, or Very Pink Knits to see how they move to demonstrate their instructions. Otherwise, your videos are super informative, keep up the great work!
I'm finding this pretty hard to follow because of the speed. If you did it the first time super-slowly, it would be easier to follow along. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Verylisa, thank you so much for your feedback, I will certainly keep it in mind for future videos, in the meantime, if you click on the little settings wheel at the bottom of the video you get some options like autoplay and video quality, one of them is Speed, and you can manually adjust the videos speed. I know its not perfect but it just might be enough for now. Cheers!
The closest I can find to it is Tillybuddy's Very Stretchy Cast On, which I have in "Cast On, Bind Off" by Leslie Ann Bestor, ISBN 971-1-60342-724-1; I've never tried this, but the illustrations are good in this book.
From what I've seen, the CWCO gives you a chained edge (whether done with 2 knitting needles or 1 knitting needle and 1 crochet hook), and this does not.
HI S Keller, I am sorry that this one is a bit quick. And I will keep that in mind for future videos. If you like you can adjust the speed at the settings wheel to slow it down for you, I know its not ideal, but its all I can offer at this time.
Enlarge the picture by clicking on the lower right hand corner of the video (on my cell). On computer or iPad, there is also an enlargement possible. It’s VERY CLEAR then.
This is Tillybuddy's very stretchy cast on and I love your demonstration. Very good instruction and lovely, calm, voice. Thank you
This is the best stretchy cast on! Haven't knitted for ages and this is my go to. Thanks a mill! 🧶
Tillybuddy called it a stretchy cast on for ribbing. She made a long and short video about 9 or 10 years ago. Both videos have good info. I just used this cast-on as you demonstrated and I love it! Thank you
I'm so glad you found it useful! what's your next project using this cast on going to be?
@@Fiberific Baby hats!
Finally, one i understand and can do thank you
Thank goodness for you, I am so grateful for this tutorial. Have been trying all types of stretchy cast ons with no success. This is a big winner.🥰🤗 a huge thank you 🙏
Thank you Carole so happy to be helpful!!
Love this cast on. Just used it for some mittens. You have a lovely voice and calm manner in teaching (both of us can’t freak out when I don’t quite get it at first LOL 😝) You do a wonderful job. Thanks! 💖
One yarn cast-ons are more comfortable, but usually take lots of time, your cast-on is fast and amazing, love it so much!!!😍😍😍
Around and around and around....this is fun!
Thanks for this really helpful video. I tried this cast on for a pair of top down socks and it’s quite brilliant-very stretchy and very neat at the same time! I’ll be using it again, for sure. Thanks Cha Cha, I may ramble in some of my other videos, just as a warning, I do like to talk hhaha.. glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for this video. It was easy to follow. I finally know how to knit a stretchy cast on for my hats.
Thats Awesine Bianca!

Thanks so much Gillian, I appreciate you telling me! And I agree I do the same with the pause and speed variation!

This cast on is worked alot like a cable cast on. Maybe a version on it. Thanks for tutorial.
Great and easy to follow tutorial. Thank you
Thank you!
Lovely looking cast on. Thanks. Do l need to start working with a knit or a purl stitch or doesn't it matter?
That's a great question, I don't think it matters, but I do usually knit first.
thank you 🌸

What is used, one stitch or a set as a stitch? Thank you
Each set makes 2 stitches. It turns into quite a quick cast on..
This is excellent. Thank heaps for sharing. :)
This is great!

I believe it is the Tilly Buddy cast on. or a variation of it at least
Love this cast on, super easy, I use it for making socks, works well.
+Barbara Crosby me too Barbara, and I also like it for a ribbed beanie too
Is it stretchy both ways??
well its super stretchy width ways and standard knit stretchy lenth ways
Thanks for the video, what do you do if you want an odd number of stitches to start with? Can you leave the slip knot? Or is there another way to make only half a pair of stitches to start?

Hi! I saw this on another video, looks great! Can I use this for socks and can it be used for more than a 2x2 rib? Ta in advance 😃
Mam from India just I saw your channel excellent way I tried came out well but I want to know after casting what next hv to knit or purl the first row pl share
This cast on works really well with a 2x2 the rib, first 2 stitches of the new round would be knit stitches.
Is the needle size British or is it mm? Thanks, grace in Vermont, usa
I
It's in mm
Thank you very much. So kind of you. Grace
The cast on is called Tillybuddy's Very Stretchy cast on
It looks very similar to Tillybuddy Csst On.
Yes, I remember TillyBuddy doing this too.
I agree with a previous poster: this is Tillybuddy's Very Stretchy Cast On. Her video (the short video) here: th-cam.com/video/iTIBTm0QL6A/w-d-xo.html
It looks very similar to the "Chinese Waitress Cast on" introduced in one of Very Pink Knits' videos.
In the future it would help us viewers if you use much bigger needles and thicker yarn so as things so up on camera a lot clearer.

you can slow down the speed in settings. much easier for you.
The only thing I found on this CO is called "extra stretchy CO"!
This is called the Chinese Waitress cast on. Most people tend to use a crochet hook, but this method is easier and more efficient.
Cool!,thank you
I'm finding this pretty hard to follow because of the speed. If you did it the first time super-slowly, it would be easier to follow along. Thanks for sharing!

Stretch casting
I have seen it called the Chinese waitress cast on
This one looks too easy. But I'm going to give it a try with the socks I'm knitting. Thanks!
Not clear.
Its called cable cat on
Whats your favorite stretchy cast on?
The closest I can find to it is Tillybuddy's Very Stretchy Cast On, which I have in "Cast On, Bind Off" by Leslie Ann Bestor, ISBN 971-1-60342-724-1; I've never tried this, but the illustrations are good in this book.
This cast on is the Chinese Waitress Cast On
From what I've seen, the CWCO gives you a chained edge (whether done with 2 knitting needles or 1 knitting needle and 1 crochet hook), and this does not.
Oh, I now see another comment saying the same thing.
🥰👍
Is Shane your Daddy?
That is called the German cast on
No it's actually Tillybuddy's Very Stretchy cast on
No way that I can follow what you're doing and do it at the same time: much much too fast. A step-by-step slow version would be more helpful to me...
HI S Keller, I am sorry that this one is a bit quick. And I will keep that in mind for future videos. If you like you can adjust the speed at the settings wheel to slow it down for you, I know its not ideal, but its all I can offer at this time.
Why dont you try using bigger needles, all we can see is your big chunky hands
You are probably trying to give possitve feedback which is great, however the comment sounds a little rude. I am sure it wasn't meant to be that way 😁
wow. just wow. i hope people are nicer to you than you are to others.
Enlarge the picture by clicking on the lower right hand corner of the video (on my cell). On computer or iPad, there is also an enlargement possible. It’s VERY CLEAR then.
Personally, I found it quite clear and easy to see. And I can think of much more helpful ways to offer feedback besides fatshaming, @Monica Madrid
@monicamadrid4852............All I can see from your comment is what a nasty, boring person you seem to be.
