It took me like twenty times watching this, slowed down, a lot of "why is this not working!" shouted, but I FINALLY got this figured out! I think it's because I yelled that what, was I using the wrong physics, or a different type of third-dimensional geometry; and the universe found that to be sufficiently humiliating to me, that it deigned to allow me to understand it.
@@uptownyarns7943 I'd decided I was sick of wearing crappy socks, and the way my mind works, "learn how to knit socks" is genuinely going to be easier for me than "figure out where to buy non-crappy socks".
Me too, my error was at the lifting the thumb over part, I was accidentally twisting my thumb over the wrong way - now I’ve slowed it down and have cracked it, it’s a lovely cast on, and easier to make it neat than the others I’ve tried!! I LOATHE long tail cast on usually because it untwists the yarn and makes it weaker but this lovely simple method doesn’t do that - hashtag converted!!!! Haha!!
Wow! I just watched 4 other videos for a stretchy cast on and could not get it right. Your method is great ... now I can start my first pair of socks! Thank you.
Love, love love this!!!! I looked everywhere for an “easy” stretchy cast-on that I could teach in a “my first socks” class and this one is the winner! I’m jokingly calling it the Canadian Cast-on, since I am a Nova Scotia gal living (and teaching knitting) in Southern California and you are in BC 😉🍁 Thanks so much for sharing this…I showed to a friend who is a Master Knitter and she had never seen it before 😮
Just what I am lookig for. My last cast on was a refined cable cast on which I really like because it is stretchy. I like this even better. Simple, simple, simple! Thank you so much. So from what you say this can be used on every project. Works for me!!!!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you. I learned the same one from my grandmother, about 50yrs ago, so it's fun to find you doing it. I was surprised to learn from an old knitting book from the 60s or 70s that it's called the "Long-tail Cast on - Thumb Method."
I have watched many stretchy cast on tutorials and got so frustrated with them yours is super easy to follow and I’m thankful for the time you took to make it,I will definitely use your way!!!
Thank you for this! I had to watch it at half speed a few times until I realised I was twisting the thumb loop before slipping it over the end of the needle. Once I figured that out, I'm good
@@uptownyarns7943 what bind off matches this cast on? Please help, I did a project and need to match the cast on on one sleeve with the bind off on the other sleeve. Please 🙏 and thank you!
thank you so much.i love how you showed how to make the cast on in stretchy.i was able to see it very clearly and you did it slow.can you do other videos on how to do wrap and turn and how to pick up the wraps and also how to use and join in double pointed needles slow.thank you.
Hello 👋 I am at the end of my first ever knitting project! :) I used this amazing vedio to start my in the round scarf. Thank you very much for sharing this long tail cast on with us. I would love a tutorial that shows a bind-off in a similar stretchy style. In any case, thank you again 🧶🙏🏼
I learned a variation of this cast on from a relative. I don't know if it is particular to a certain background but as you stated. have not seen it in any books.
HI! So watch right near the end of the video where I lift my thumb over. If you lift your thumb and twist, you get two stitches. If you lift your thumb like it's a needle and don't twist, you'll just get one.. Happy Knitting!
I think I must be super dense, because I don't find this cast on simple at all. I always end up with two stitches made instead of one. Going to be using a different cast on instead.
Thank you so much. I tried several other stretchy cast on first, but couldn't seem to get the hang of them. This method is fantastic!
Awesome! Enjoy!!!

So glad you got it! It's my favourite, and the cast on I use for virtually everything. Happy Knitting!

Like it! I've been knitting for 60 years, and always looking for a better cast on. Especially a stretchy one for socks! Thanks!
This is so much less wrought than the longtail cast-on! Thank you from a grateful beginner.
Awww so glad!!! Have fun with it!

Thank you Jen! This was the only stretchy cast on where I could follow the instructions 🙂
HALLELUJAH THIS FINALLY WORKS I've been losing my mind over tubular cast ons for DAYS and this feels amazing already
So glad! Seriously, we use it for virtually everything! Happy Knitting!
Thank you. Very easy and simple. Great tutorial. ❤😊
I have looked at lots of stretchy cast-ons online but this is the simplest and best demonstrated.
So glad you found it helpful!!!
It is like crochet cast-on leaving braided edge in the bottom… wonderful. Thank you!🙏 😊
You're welcome!!

This is a game changer!! Thank you for sharing it!!

At last! A stretchy sock cuff cast on I can follow, thank you and your Grandma for this!
Thank you for this video. lovely and slow and easy to follow.
You saved me! After a half an hour of trying to follow a video about the German cast on I found this. Thank you so much!
Wonderful! Enjoy!
I've tried every stretch cast on here on TH-cam and Uptown Yarns' cast on is the best of them all. Thank you, thank you for putting this up here.
Yay! Glad you love it! Happy Knitting!
Brilliant- finally one i can actually remember!

Thank you so much! This is super helpful! It would be hilarious if you did the "I'm your mom now" meme too.

extremely helpfull and so easy. THANK YOU :)
I learned this from my mom as well and I didn’t know other people didn’t use it I thought it was what is called a long tail cast on very cool 😮
Marvellous! Thanks! 🇬🇧
Fantastic ❤ thanks
What bind off matches this cast on?
Love the Canadian accent 😚🇨🇦
thank you xx
I always wind up with two stitches per cast-on process. What am I doing wrong?
