    Mr Man Cave…….I have a 94 Seaswril boat with a 302 5.0 Volva Penta. It usually fires right up and runs great. After running 20-30 mins we stop swim or hang out for an hour or so and the boat is a hard start it takes 2-3 long crank tries then starts and runs smooth. Today wouldn’t start if it did it ran for a second or so. I’m pretty sure it’s the electric fuel pump. What do you think? We had it rebuilt about 6 year’s ago. I seem to work fine but gradually back to the way it runs now.

    Thanks for the video. Super helpful. Trouble shooting a fuel pump in an older Penta 5.0 Gi. Do you know where the high pressure test valve is on the older engines (1999-2000)?

    Troy, I use the same fuel pressure gauge as you. There is a trick you can do to have a good idea of the pumps health. You need to perform this first on an engine that has a healthy pump/system (a reference motor). Connect it to the high pressure fitting as you did and run the gauge's drain tube into a container. Start the engine and idle then fully depress the valve on the gauge and note the lower pressure number. The engine won't even shudder at this pressure drop at idle. You now have a number for "THAT" gauge with "THAT" fuel sell/engine/regulator. For instance my Marine Power 5.7mpi is 52 psi and 29 psi with the valve depressed when it's healthy.

    I appreciate you. I'm a novice mechanic at Best but I like to know how my motors run. One of these days I'll try what you're teaching me but for now I just appreciate the knowledge.

    Hi, I have about 48 psi which drops to 46psi after 2000rpm. I have a new pump, but not the original one. Can you tell me if this is a very small pressure and I need to replace the pump again or look for a problem elsewhere? I can't get into the glider.

  • @ronbown3836
    @ronbown3836 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If we getting low pressure like 38 psi on the high-pressure side would that be caused by the screen on the fuel rail? The pump is brand new and it’s only pushing 38 psi while running

    I'm also a little confused at the pressure (Specs... (50 -58)PSI)... 50PSI is 3.5 bar while the genuine regulator is 4 bar, and that's 58 PSI. Just trying to get some results on my black smoke issue.

  • @MrSpeigels
    @MrSpeigels 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi, thanks for the video! I am seeing 50psi on priming cycle(motor off) however, when I start it I'm seeing a very jumpy needle on my gauge and it goes to 80-100psi. Low pressure is a constant 10psi. Before I took apart my fuel housing( preventative before paint flakes, both readings were in spec) it was constant at 50psi.. Perhaps something with the float needle? The FPR looks fine and not blocked. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the awesome videos!

    • @Funbgs2
      @Funbgs2 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know it's a late reply but it's for anyone seeing your comment. It's a bad fuel pump. It's a known issue amongst volvo and mercruiser. Fuel pressure between both motors should be around 50PSI and the needle needs to be steady. Now replacing the fuel pump is part of the fix. But you need to pull the injectors and fuel pressure regulator and have them cleaned and tested. Paint inside the fuel pump will pass through to the injectors and regulator causing poor performance.

    Hi Troy,
    We hade a problem with our 4.3 GXI, directly when started it runs rough then dies. I suspected the fuel pump so we measured the low and high-pressure pump value. When we connected the manometer to the high-pressure valve and started the engine it suddenly runs perfectly with 55PSI of pressure. Removed the manometer and took it for a test run without any problem. Any idea what it could be?

    i notice the low pressure fuel side has a valve similar to a tire stem and the adapter that goes onto it also has one similar to depress on inside how does the one on fuel rail depress does anyone know and this video is very informative i tried it on my 5.0 Volvo penta gxi and i get no reading on the gauge even after i start the engine does this mean the high pressure side is not working i have even taking boat out it runs until i want to give it more power to plane it out then it sometimes go and then drops back into the water and bogs down and backfires through carb

    I am working on 05 3.0 volvo engine starts right up, and sound good. The problem is I can only get to a speed of 21 mph the boat is a 18ft I know it should have no problem doing 38+mph. Any ideas on what it mite be or what to test.
    Tomorrow I am testing compression again and checking spark.
    Also the tac dose not work wish I know would help to see if I am getting full rpms. At about wof.

    Thanks for the video . I have a Volvo Penta 4.3 engine. I saw some fuel on the bottom on my inboard boat. The pump was replaced less than a year ago. Could it be the filter?

    • @ManCaveMechanic
      @ManCaveMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the filter should be installed with oil on the gasket as well as the seat. Screw the filter on until it touches the seat then tighten 3/4 turn. Over tightening will bunch the gasket and cause it to leak.

    I'm sorry but you've got a pressure gauge with a dump button. That means it's a 'sample and hold' gauge so you won't see any low readings unless you dump and reset. So how can you test for real tiome pressures? For that, you need a fully open gauge. IMHO

    • @SkypowerwithKarl
      @SkypowerwithKarl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it does not hold the highest reading, It's real time. There is no check valve, it's open to the fuel rail. The valve is only there to relive pressure to help not damage the O ring of the gauge at the Schrader valve and not spill a lot of fuel on the intake manifold. I have the exact same tool as Troy does.

    Changed the after market pump to a 1200.00 oem pump now the boat starts but has no power. The old pump would run awesome until trolling or idling. Then would crap out. I'd start back up and take off like a bullet. Now new pump everything is opposite. Volvo penta has so many fuel issues and NO ONE can give you a deffinate cause unless changing part by part until in runs correctly. Trouble shooting on these fuel set ups a impossible. Alot of trips to mechanic and ALOT of money and still runs like shit. I supposedly had the best CERTIFIED VOLVL PENTA MECHANIC AROUND. GUESS WHAT? HES CLUELESS ALSO.
    IM PISSED,FRUSTRATED AND OUT OF MONEY.
