sounds exactly what i went thru, after replacing the anti-syphon valve on fuel tank pick up(cheapest part) then fuel separator and gas filter. it turned out to be the low pressure fuel cell(pump). the fuel cell can fail when hot or fail from ethenol related problems. opted for the oem part ($360 ) vs after market ($230) and problem solved. i would advise you change the gas separator and filter and prime both. always run gas additive in your tank to maintain fuel and water issues. good luck
Check the Carter fuel cell, I don't know why but for some reason Carter paints the inside of these and it ends up clogging all the screen s and fuel pumps. This was the problem with mine, I changed the fuel/water separator and noticed paint peeling off from inside the cell where both pumps are tied into. I took it all apart and sure enough paint had clover the inlets to the pumps, hence making them scream, also leading to my lean backfire pops coming from the intake. Anyway I cleaned mine and removed all the paint and not had a problem sence, pumps sound normal also, no more screaming. I saved myself $700 for the part alone, hopefully this helps someone
I have the Volvo Penta GI 302 also. This year it was running great and just cut off. Second time this has happened in three years. The primary pump quit running. We pumped fuel with the old style in line bulb to the primary pump. It would run and idle great, go to the lake and it would quit again. What was happening was the box below the secondary pump would fill up and then after a while would give out of fuel and quit. The secondary pump would start whining real loud. I think that was the noise in your video. If you run the pumps to long without fuel they will burn up. Well I finally hot wired the primary pump and it would run and the motor would crank right up and run perfect. After 600 dollars for help from boat mechanics 70 dollars an hour and I helped. Two new pumps 520 dollars. When I jumped the primary pump it would run. Take a test light and check the current at the plug that goes to the primary pump and see if there is current when the key is turned on and it will stay on for about three seconds. If it doesn't check the oil pressure sending unit. After the motor cranks you can feel the primary pump run and the secondary pump with your hand. Last thing after all this we took a ice pick and opened the terminals in the plug, it wasn't making connections at the primary pump. What a learning experience!!!!!
Couple of questions please. Would the engine die when at idle? My 5.0 Gi runs well at high speeds but after a sustained idle it will give the high pitched whine from the high pressure fuel pump and die. Secondly, did you simply fix the electrical current delivery tot he low pressure pump? Is that what eventually took care of the problem? Thanks for your help.
I had the same symptoms.. mine ended up being water in the fuel. The way the mechanic checked it was you remove the fuel filter dumped out the fuel that was in it. If you have a new filter use that instead.put fresh fuel in the fuel filter then removed the hose from the fuel tank and put it into a auxiliary gas cans that he brought with him with fresh fuel. He replaced the fuel filter with fresh fuel and we started the boat. Ran the engine for 20 mins at Various RPMs bingo problem diagnosed. Now I just need to drain the tank and put fresh fuel.
Verify fuel pump has correct pressure. Mine was the exact same issue. Turned out they sold me a high pressure fuel pump, even though I ordered a low pressure pump. Box was labeled wrong too.
Same problem....Check the fuel connectors for the pumps...their are two...the volume pump isn't pushing enough fuel so look at that connector first! This is a huge issue with Volvo Penta fuel pumps ($700+) part. Don't but the part until you confirm a good electrical connection! I actually removed both plugs and made my own which fixed a ton of the problems.
Vacuum leak is pretty easy to detect. What u need to do is get someone crank the engine while spray carburetor cleaner or the same can used to started it with and spray around where the leak and isolated it first
I cleaned out the fuel pump screen with brakr kleen...paint chips blockin fuel...cleaned draw tube screen too in tank.....runs greay now....sand blast the fuel cell by fuel water seporater....done
that "noise is a serious vacuum leak fix that and your idle will come down....new fuel pump and your good to go! thumbs down on a timing issue...definatly fuel delivery issue!
I have the 4.3gi, hear that whine from fuel pump. Its got blocked gauze in it or pump failing. They are quiet normally, if you can hear that, its cavitating, your fuel pressure is way down and its going to do all kinds of weird stuff,
Check fuel cell elect plug first (it comes disconnected) so the engine runs if primed and the vacuum keeps it running long as you don't accelerate.. That's the vacuum sound you're getting right before it dies. 2- change IAC valve but make sure you get the right one with the right tip. 3- check your distributor cap.. If the terminals are white on the inside, they're corroded: change cap & rotor & ALWAYS use the brass ones NOT aluminum. Good luck
Hello, I have the same problem, already change the high pressure fuel pump and filters, it starts to fail until the engine stops. Now it was added that the starter breaks me so much. I can't solve it for 2 months.
have an 06 crownline ,5,0gl Volvo penta sx took it out first time this year ideling across the lake next thing I now it looks like it's on fire smoke coming out of vents engine compartment blowing out smoke temp 300. shut down turned on blower toed in thought it was on fire
I’ve owned a lot of boats, and I’m not brand bias but I can tell you that the Volvo Penta with the Ford 5.0 ho is a far better engine than the Chevy 5.0, the fords will last triple the hours than a Chevy, and this info is coming from a boat rental experience that I ran for over 35 years.
It's not getting fuel. New plugs, new wires & new fuel pump. Check water/fuel separator for potential blockage. I have a 5.7 GI. Once I swapped out the items mentioned above it was golden. Started up every time.
Bad fuel pump or not enough fuel pressure. Also remember that it doesn’t run on Fluid, it runs in gasoline. Hope you didn’t put water in your fuel tank to fill her up.

Definitely fuel check filters and replace fuel pump need be..
have a same engine...5.0 Gi
same problem..
changed fuel pump and was fixed

I have the 97 OMC/Volvo Penta version and that was the issue for me.

I have the same motor replaced everything the problem is the I.A.C that loud suction noise is that plunger not going all the way in at the TBI

It’s obvious it’s starving for fuel once you use starter fluid it start’s vacuuming the fuel, pump filters or vacuum leaks
Where is the trim fuse located?
Hello, I have the same problem, already change the high pressure fuel pump and filters, it starts to fail until the engine stops. Now it was added that the starter breaks me so much. I can't solve it for 2 months.
What is the fuel pressure? How did you set the timing?
Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I have a very similar issue with my boat
the air lock you can here is creating a air get that sorted then see how it runs
Is the distributor timing set correctly that's what it sounds like to me
Did you check the fuel filter
I'd check the computer for the fuel injection, expensive part, but that could be the issue.
Was a bad fuel pump and air intake sensor.
Idle air control valve or iac contros idle after starting it should quit up if not have cheked

ho lo stesso problema , ma fa fumo nero ?
I bet dollars to donuts your Idle Air Control Valve is bad. $37 part at Advance Auto Parts.
my5.0ltr is just not starting all totally rebuilt Inc carb 50 hrs
is the starter hard to change on this?
No
Volvo penta is not essentially a chevy small block. How about a Ford 302 small block.
In 96 they used 305 blocks gi in some boats
I would spend the money for a high rise intake and carb shit can the fuel injection system

fuel injected motors suck for boats, they are overly complex, i would just replace your entire manifold and get a carburetor fitted
can anybody suggest a solution

I have a 5.7 GI. Once I swapped out the items mentioned above it was golden. Started up every time.
i have the 5.0GI PEFS engine
Intake leak
Check ur timing
Lol
If all else fails, just stroke the outdrive
