Sure wish every “You-Tuber’s" how to videos were as thorough as yours. I have Volvo Penta 5.7‘s in my Monterey sports cruiser and have chronic fuel pump problems. It’s been so helpful to watch you give instruction about how to check for problems and solve them without too much hassle. Thank you.

I find your videos to be extremely helpful. Great tutorial! I've watched this before but wanted to come back and make a comment on it. Straight to the point with clear instructions on how to do the job. Thank you for taking the time to make this great video. Your other videos is also very helpful as well.

Thanks for the video! My engines would start and run great on plane, however when I brought the engines back down to idle too quickly both engines would stall. Then it took a little throttle to restart back to idle. I found that the screens on the fuel filter regulator had never been cleaned (2004-2021)! The red OEM paint on the black rubber connector to the fuel pressure regulator had not been touched. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator screen with the Volvo recommended E-Clip replacement, and this problem disappeared! I can drop the throttles to idle quickly with no issues now. Thanks for the help! (2004 Chaparral 28 SSI with twin Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-E bought in 2019)

I never comment on videos but yours are great. I have a 5.7 in a Osprey out here in Washington State in the Salt. I have a whinning noise. Your video got me on the right track. Super appreciate your help and I already ordered your gasket set. PS I am originally from Three Rivers Michigan and have been all over the state. Awesome!

Great vid. On my 8.1, I took apart the fuel cell and peered inside it for chips. Thank GAWD I didn't have any, but it was replaced a few years beforehand, so I didn't expect any. Hesitation/farts turned out to be a bad regulator.

Great video. I purchased a Carver boat with a 8.1 Volvo. Had the boat for 3 hours after a survey in the motor blew up. Found out there was paint chips in the injectors number one number three and number six. All those cylinders disintegrated they were leaned out. So apparently the chips got by everything else is so got into the injectors.

Coming back to add my pump has been whining as long as I have had my boat (3-4yrs)
Boat has full power and no issues running.
After I found this video I ran several tests and couldn’t find any issues with pressure. I did clean the fpr screen, but don’t think there was much on it. I may pull it again and check as well as the low pressure pump again. I can’t remember if I actually cleaned that out, but I did check it.
    Am I just lucky?

Volvo has a fix for the fuel pressure regular. You remove the screen on the regular and replace it with a c clip. Solved my problem for high fuel pressure.

Great vid and very interesting. I have an old OMC Cobra 4.3 V6 with a 4bbl Quadrajet and a mechanical fuel pump. I'm wondering why either V/P or their supplier would paint the inside of a fuel pump? I've taken mechanical fuel pumps apart and never saw any of them painted or coated with anything on the inside. Just plain aluminum. The odd thing is that the ethanol in fuel some of us have to use, is a solvent that hypothetically could dissolve paint!

so what's the fix to get ahead of this preventatively? disassemble the whole assembly and try to remove all the paint that's on the inside? I assume new Volvo or even aftermarket have no paint now that the problem has been known about for so long? Thanks for the video.

Can you relieve the pressure from the fuel rail without a fuel pressure guage, by putting a rag over the pressure relief valve and pushing down the same you would to let air out of a tire? Is there that much fuel behind it?

  • @PMPerformance

@@richcovey3886 That's great news! My fuel pump is super noisy and cuts out every mile or so when under load. So when im going 40-50 and planed off my engine will last about a mile before it starts to cut out and you can then hear the fuel pump whine and try and rush to give it fuel but it just seems to not be able to feed it enough fuel. What I do is turn it on accessory 4-5 times to fill the fuel filter and that seems to last me about 2 miles. Long story short, im replacing my fuel pump on Wednesday and will clean the fuel pressure regulator filter and screen again and hope that will fix my issue. I checked all the filters like shown in this video and all mine were pretty clogged up with paint chips, especially the fuel pressure regulator filter.

Troy, good video. I find the low pressure test port but not the high. I don’t have a fuel rail but instead the 2 hoses that come from the pump go into the back of the throttle body. Not sure how to check high pressure or where to locate the pressure sensor. Mine seems to be an older fuel injected model. 5.7 Volvo penta on a Four Winns. FYI. Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Good day.
I have Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI on four winns 2004.
If you can advise for the problem. When I run engine around more than 3500-4000 seems like not enough fuel and stopping. I do reduce, after just run on neutral and can do up to 3500 rpm.
    Thanks.

Hey I have a 2001 Larson Escape with a Volvo Penta 5.0 OSI and it’s having issues that I can’t seem to put my finger on. We have changed fuel filter, wires, plugs, cap, and several other items. Have you seen this before? Does it seem like a fuel pump issue? A fuel pressure test was done but it wasn’t acting up at the time with Mechanic. th-cam.com/video/gCnvksaL9lo/w-d-xo.html
Turn volume up and you can hear what it’s doing. The video is trying to show the RPMs going up and down but other gauges are not having issues.
