for those who are going to use this video as a tutorial, never ever tighten down the ignition coils with an impact like he did, you risk cracking the coil.

That 14mm bolt on the intake plenum is a real PINA to remove on a Avalon. There’s no space between that bolt and the firewall. And you can’t really unbolt it by hand because it’s so stuck.

Seriously EXCELLENT channel in its ENTIRETY, TOP NOTCH!! Except it's true as a few others noted, the seals are supposed to be installed tapered edges facing interior. We all fumble from time to time, just wanted to set a potential comment scrollers mind at ease if working on a friend's car.

The circular gaskets that go over the spark plug tubes should be installed the tapered circular rounded edge would go toward the tube so when you are installing them ,in the cover, the rounded side underside of cover, should face you. In this video he installed the opposite way.

Great camera angles and good descriptions of MOST steps. Unfortunately, I have to agree with a couple of other comments, he installs the tube gaskets backwards. When installing the tube gaskets the flat side should face the underside of the valve cover. The side with a half circle ridge should face downward, away from the valve cover. This permits the tube gaskets to slide over the tubes easily. I have no idea if they will leak when installed backwards but would not want to take a chance. As to the folks who say the valve cover bolts are TTY (torque to yield): I found no evidence to back-up that statement including referencing the Hayes Manual and speaking with the service manager at the local dealership. In addition, there are a couple of other TH-cam videos out there and none of them specify TTY bolts.

One more comment: This is NOT a job for casual tinkerers. The rear valve cover gasket replacement is VERY challenging due to VERY tight clearances. Front valve cover gasket is easy.

5:26 orentation is a highly debated topic. With it in the other direction it slides over the spark plug tube much easier. I even recall seeing a Fel-pro video showing the orintation is oposite and they are the ones who made them.

For those saying he installed the spark plug seals incorrectly, he did not. Look at 4:14 and then look at 23:18 to 23:50 and you will see that he installed them in precisely the way they came out! He did the right thing! If you're following this video, rest easy knowing you're doing the right thing if you follow the information given.

You have to be careful installing the spark plug tube seals. Fel-Pro neglects to give you any instructions on how to install the seals. Specifically they don't show you which side of the seal goes up and which side goes down. Their website just tells you to put them in the same way as the original ones but the original seals look totally different. I'm assuming you know from experience that the way you are showing them installed is the correct way. If you look at the seals they have a rounded side that would make installing the cover over the spark plug tubes a lot easier but who knows if that's correct or not. You would think those idiots at Fel-Pro would include a simple diagram so someone doesn't end up guessing wrong and putting the seals in upside down.

    BRILLIANT!
I thought about this when I was changing the spark plugs in my 1999 Toyota solara V6 but didn't. It's so foolish not to vacuum out any debris that got in there that could otherwise get in the cylinder.
    WELL DONE INDEED!
EDIT: first video showing how to keep the throttle body on the intake so you can take both off as an assembly saves a lot of steps.

Hey so i got a question; can you re-use the manifold gaskets after said & done? Im replacing my knock sensor but I don't think I'll have the time or money to get the valve cover gaskets at the same time so I wanna put it back together, re-use manifold gaskets then do the valve gaskets some other time.

    • @travis4572
      @travis4572 ปีที่แล้ว

I believe there are two knock sensors on these cars. Just wait if you are able to do the gaskets at the same time also add a washer to each bolt I forgot what size because these are crush washers. Also when doing the knock sensors inspect the coolent hose that's under there and might as well change sparkplugs and wires. Yeah it's a lot but while your there kinda thing just save and do it right the first time. Another tip is the inserts that go into the valve covers there is a little metal tab that should bend out put the new ones in fold tap little metal tabs back down. Otherwise you can tear the new plug gaskets on the metal another video shows you this process

Any idea why my brake light is now illuminated on my dash after doing this repair? I can’t see anything out of place or bound up or disconnected. I totally crimped the gasket the first time, on the rear one, of course. Oil gusher! Second attempt seems to be good. Other than the brake light. Brakes do appear to be working correctly and all the vacuum lines seem to be in the right spots

Hello. basically . I was changing a sparkplug of a V 6 Rx 300 0f '01. the sleeve of sparkplug at the back ,broke off where the hard palstic , about 1/2 inch. I have the sparkplug out . I did everything possible to pull it out . after lubricaring with silicon , it doesn't even turn . I was thinking of drilling it to pieces, and after that , vacuum inside . will it work? Thanks.

    Very unprofessional mechanic:
    1. Power tool SHOULD NOT be used on ignition coil
    2. Plies SHOULD NOT be used as a hammer (first the cover is "cleaned" of dirt and then he whacks it with pliers releasing dirt particles that will fall into the engine)
    3. His spark plug gaskets are brand new that is why there are so easy to release. You will have very hard time trying to remove the original 20 year old gaskets.

Several mistakes in this video. The half moons were not replaced with new rtv. They WILL leak. Also, those are 1 time use cover bolts, and should not be used over again. Also, there IS A SEQUENCE to tightening them down, and they should be tightened in several passes. Amateur hour over here, bud.
