  • This video is a Stage 3 continuation of a Lexus ES300 redo project. The prior stage 3 items involved removal and replacement of the radiator and its upper and lower hoses. Since the alternator gave out after we replaced the timing belt, we replaced that as well (under the previous owner's Autozone warranty). The items to be replaced or serviced in this video are: 1. Throttle body removal and cleaning. 2. Left and right valve cover gasket replacement. 3. Spark plug replacement 4. Firewall side oxygen sensor replacement 5. Ignition wire replacement 6. Air filter replacement.
    Since the ES 300 engine ( 1MZFE) is shared with other Toyota vehicles, the service being performed on this vehicle can be duplicated on the V6 Camy, Avalon, Solara and other Toyota vehicles as well.

      Thank you for you kind words! The MZFE series is a wonderful all aluminum V6 engine that had a successful long production life. The engineers at Toyota should be proud. It's successor, the 2GR-FE, has taken it's place and is also establishing its own legacy.

    1997. Before Toyota introduced VVT-i technology. With VVT-i the EGR gases were no longer directed to the intake, the engine was now interference and came with dual throttle bodies.

    Thanks for making this video. I was able to replace the valve cover gaskets with this fairly thorough walk through. Thanks . I was able to pick up what tools worked best and my 1998 Lexus ES 300 purrs. Even with 209,000 miles. The only things I did different as far as clips, hoses, vacumn lines etc. Was I had to label everything ,so I used colored electrical tape. Took a little longer but kept me from forgetting anything. Plus a vacumn line with a piece of red tape is easy to see compared to black hose which blends in. I couldn't have done it as easily without this video. Thanks again

    Replaced front and rear valve cover gaskets on my 1MZFE Avalon. Can I ask why you put the RTV in the corners towards the passenger side when re-installing the rear valve cover? My back cover is dumping oil due to pinching the gasket when replacing or forgetting to re-tighten cover bolt. Have to get back inside and was just curious about the RTV.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You use RTV for sharp corner areas where the gasket may not provide a complete seal and seams where two parts are joined.

  • @jeffreyrstapler
    @jeffreyrstapler 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you use the Toyota seal packing 103 FIPG on the valve cover corners around the cam? What do you use on the water pump gasket? Do you replace the thermostat and what do you use on it?

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good questions! I've had no problems and good success using Permatex RTV ... preferably the Ultra Gray. The important thing is thoroughly clean the new valve cover gasket's contact surface on the cylinder head of any residual sealant and oil. The replacement water pump is made by Aisin (the OE provider for Toyota) and comes with a new stainless steel gasket with rubber type sealant / coating that does not require any RTV type sealant. The Aisin pump, hands down, will easily get you 100k trouble free miles and worth the extra $$$'s. Had bad luck with other w/p's from name brand aftermarket parts manufacturers. What's important is to thoroughly clean the engine block water pump contact surface before mounting the new pump. I generally do not replace the thermostat unless there's indicating that it's failing. If you do decide to replace it, replace the grooved thermostat rubber gasket. Re-using the gasket is not a good idea. You can increase the longevity of the gasket by applying a light coat of di-electric / silicone grease. Good luck with the repair!

  • @fernandom7715
    @fernandom7715 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a 1997 lexus es 300 and I wish I can do all the job that you did, I had to pay some one to put a healing coil on one of the spark plug and I removed the front valve cover and didn't change the gasket just added silicon and notice it have some leaks

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A stiff, dried out valve cover gasket lacks the pliability to provide a good leak free oil seal. Applying RTV silicon sealant is a common "band aide" approach that people use in lieu of a gasket replacement. It does not work and the dried RTV leaves a mess that takes time and effort to scrap off before a new replacement gasket is installed.

      Keeping everything factory original will help you diagnose future problems. When shops see aftermarket products, they may turn your business away. Tried cold air intakes and didn't notice much improvement. You have a air scoop, from my recollection, under the hood set up for ram air. That's basically a cold (out side air) intake system.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thanks! Unless the valves are making noise, I don't really like to mess with them. You have to buy a valve shim kit with every imaginable number of shim sizes and a special valve compression tool. Then you have to do the arithmetic figuring out the right size shim to install based on the valve gap, existing shim size and new shim size.

    • @nickkettering6093
      @nickkettering6093 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah mine clicks pretty bad. 200,000 and I'm pretty sure this 99 Camry v6 has only had the bare minium done. Would be a good job to do when changing valve cover gasket right?

    • @nickkettering6093
      @nickkettering6093 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I watched another video about it on something other than the 1mzfe. Seems pretty easy, maybe find a conversion website or app to make it easier.
      Could you source individual shims somewhere instead of buying the whole kit?

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're hard to come by. Don't know the quality of the steel if its not from Toyota. You'll have to pull the shims that are out of spec and figure which size you'll need. We're talking about measurements on 32 shims and the engine has to be stone cold before take any measurements. I screwed up a few years back, made them too tight and burned two valves out. Had to remove the head to install new valves! One idea is to practice on a 1MZFE at the salvage yard. Heck, you can pull the shims from that car! If your exhaust has a leak close to the exhaust manifold, the engine will make what seems like a valve ticking sound. Maybe one of your exhaust donut gaskets is worn out?

Long story short, as i was trying to figure out why my glove box, dome and drivers side door lights didnt come on, i found a blown 7.5 amp dome fuse in the fuse box near the battery. The seller replaced the battery recently and also the drivers side door window regulator. I have found that the seller hid and did not disclose this alarm issue by leaving the blown fuse in and im attempting to fix the problem for good. Some forums say theres wires that go bad in the door jamb. I believe it has to do with the key fob bc it does not work and wont lock and unlock the doors. I will be taking apart the drivers door to check everything thoroughly. My question is, are you familiar with a procedure to reset my toyota factory alarm us built? • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people like to add another washer or washers under the valve cover bolts to put more compression on the valve cover gasket. I found no need to do that. I distribute the torque evenly on all bolts starting from the inside bolt until they all bottom out. Applying all the torque to one bolt and then to the next bolt is a big no no and will not result in even pressure on the new gasket; hence a leak will emerge.

    Wonder why you didn't install new tube seals when you did valve cover gaskets. They look old and the new ones are most likely come with the aftermarket gasket set anyway. I know it'd take pain to remove them though.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would have been a nice-to-do but the new gaskets didn't come with them. Also, haven't encountered oil leak tube seal issues with the MZFE engines.

    • @minhdo9597
      @minhdo9597 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hardlymovingpro Right, oil can't go up the tubes in both banks. But after some 20 years (let's say nobody have done this job for this car) one of those seals may crack when putting the covers back in. Also, I'd replace the PCV valve when cover is out, and the grommet, because later if you need to replace that valve, you have to break it, and most likely the other haft of the valve would fall in the hole plus the broken hardened grommet.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm able to get PCV valves, most of the time, out of the stubborn dried out grommet using silicon spray. In this job, it wasn't a problem. In lieu of replacing the valve, you can spray carb cleaner into any of the valve's openings and shake it. If you can hear and feel the spring inside moving, the PCV is still good. No argument about the spark plug tube seals. The valve cover kit didn't come with new seals. As I had mentioned before, I've never encountered oil leak problems from the tube seals. FYI: Toyota makes it a little bit of a hassle to remove the tube seal by placing a metal tab over the recessed seal. The tab has to be bent up before attempting to remove the seals. After the new seals have been installed, the tabs have to be bent back down.

      @@hardlymovingpro I'm in the middle of this project because of a leaking tube seal. Someone before me done this job with new gaskets and tube seals, but they didn't bend the little tabs up when installing the new seals, and the seals have a gouge on one side, hence the leak. I'm surprised they all didn't leak. If you're into it this far, I don't understand why you wouldn't want to do it right and lift the tabs with a pair of pliers, insert new tube seals, and bend the tabs back after installing. I wouldn't be doing this job if the previous mechanic done it right the first time. I bought the Fel-Pro gasket set and it came with the tube seals for $22.00. Cheap!

    It's been probably almost two years since I first watched this video.
    Early spring of 2023 I've been trying to do this job and it's been one impediment after another after an impediment after another after impediment after another. Lose a tool, lose apart, have to walk to the store, have to take the bus to the dealership, and today I'm deadline by part I spent 6 hours on bus to get that's not even $6: valve cover bolt.
    Background to Question for Mr. Productions:
    The workshop manual does not show this 1MZ-FE valve cover bolt. Forum posts say that the grommet on the boat should be replaced as if it's only a one-time-use. One commenter on a form said the bolts are brittle and should be replaced.
    Since I'm going to be down and out until new bolts arrive to the Chicago area:
    Question: should I just get the one bolt with comes with the grommet attached?
    Or should I get a set of 8 for about $35 tax and shipping?
    This rear Bank 1 job has kicked my ass from here to Timbuktu. I don't care if I live to be a hundred- thirty years old, I don't want to have to do this arduous job again.
    Please advise.
    P.S. I want for him a commenter said that he took his car in to a Toyota dealership have the timing belt changed and then it still started leaking out the front cover.

      Thanks for the quick reply.
      Duly noted as to the bolts.
      Posters on ToyotaNation forum say that, or allege that the bolts might be too long and thus they bottom out and don't create enough OEM engineered torque causing a leak. The most often mentioned solution was to put 2 5/16 inch washers on each bolt so that said bolt will remain higher from the valve cover surface thus preventing any bottoming out thus also finally allowing the proper torquing to 69 pounds per inch.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're designed to torque down until they bottom out. Around 7 lbs. Use a 1/4 socket wrench so you won't shear the bolts off. Strongly recommend you do not use a torque wrench on these 10 mm bolts. If the wrench is slightly off calibration, those bolts can easily shear off. Seen it happen many times with rookie mechanics. If you're afraid the bolts may come loose, then apply thread lock.
