I remember playing this as a teenager and thinking it was a significant improvement visually over the first one. I'm currently playing Wreckfest on the PS5 which is how I imagined in my head this looked.
I've been trying to preach to anyone who will listen that Wreckfest is the closest thing you will find to a spiritual successor to DD. I love Wreckfest!
@@Swoldemort500 It really is, reminds me of the Wreckin Races or whatever they were called where you would try to finish first but you got points for damaging and destroying cars. Wreckfest is essentially a more modern version of DD minus the commentator. I love Wreckfest, I really, really hope they decide to make another one eventually
@@crimsontide1980 and Flatout 2, it was great at the time (I believe Wreckfest is from the same developers). BeamNG does a better job with crashes though.
It was genius to have polygons fly off as damage. Of course small particle effects were so difficult to use on such limited hardware so instead they just had some coloured triangular polygons fly about when you crashed as cheap effects. It gave the game a distinctive look and you knew instantly what you were playing.
Just turned 28 years old today, and it’s crazy to reflect back on how much time I played this when I was 5 years old. Does anybody remember when Pizza Hut gave out free demo games like that snowboarding game? The nostalgia
There was an incident where me and my sister played this and drove backwards on the track and jumped over a hill when suddenly one other car just crashes underneath our vehicle and launched the car like 200 feet in the air. We could never reproduce that.
OMG SAME! I reverse raced and hit a car the moment it hit the bottom of the hill - it sent me flying directly upwards so high that all of the course disappeared beyond the draw distance. I was convinced it was a rare error
Yep, but PS1 was the house of great series : to name a few, GTA1, Tekken series, Resident evil, Fifa, Gran turismo, Metal Gear solid, Cool Boarders, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot
Wow, took me some searching but finally found what this was called. So many memories going down that big hill was always my favorite. 100%would play a new version of this game day one
@@crimsontide1980 Just got that game recently, and the thought that crossed my mind was "this feels like a spiritual successor to Destruction Derby." Destruction Derby and Jet Moto were my childhood racing games, and, to be honest, nothing has topped those since.
The gigantic jump down a huge hill? Was there also a weird bump on the right hand side that you could use to make the car do multiple barrel-rolls etc? I played that thousands of times
I had a chipped PS1, I played this game in the US version (60hz). To date still the best stock car game for me. A monumental suite, graphics, perfect animation.
Its not just about watching an old favourite game.... this transports us back to simpler times, and I would do anything for the world to be that simple again 😢
GTA, gran turismo, tomb raider, destruction derby etc. gosh i miss the good old days of playing OUTSIDE after school with my friends and clocking my games on the consoles on rainy days.
I remember buying this game being 7 years old and loving playing it. Most of all I loved waiting underneath hills where other cars would land and send them off flying into the sky due to the mechanics. (Driver had the same thing where cars landing on top of you would fly off into the sky) I had a replay save where I was spinning on my hood like a gyroscope for 4 minutes until the spin lost momentum🤣
These are the most greatest race tracks of my life ! :D Iused to play it so much that at the end I mastered every race track and demolished a lot of cars and gained lots of points for that.
Это моё детство лет 8 мне тогда было. Сидел с джойстиком маленький задрот и гамал в игрулю ))) И я сейчас окунулся именно туда. Машина времени существует!
This game was such a pain in the asss for me. Was my first game on ps1 when I was like 5 or 6. Always ended up getting destroyed before everyone else. I never got past the first two tracks
The PS1 was probably the biggest overnight lead forward I ever saw in gaming. Before it we had only 2d games played on 16 bit machines. Yea Doom had come out on PC in 1993 but next to no one could afford PCs and I had only seen screenshots in magazines.

The good old days. When social media was non existing and people actually just enjoyed life.
Amen.
@@janpiet1530 amen
Amen to that, brother. Now, where can I find the Mech Warrior 2 game for PC
yeah sitting at home playing destruction derby is enjoying life
I ordered it from eBay yesterday
i used to turn my car sideways in narrow parts of the track to see the biggest pileup i could get
I thought I was the only one. Especially the narrow part at 12:40 that was extremely fun to do.
+Daan Rotteveel I did the same :D
+Daan Rotteveel Yup, same thing.
John Carlett haha same here

Cool boarders? The snowing one?
Wow so many memories. This was my very first ps1 game. Me and and my dad played this so much in the late 90's.

Extra1 Yea the physics were outta this world. It was mad fun nonetheless
Hol up..YOU DID THAT TOO?
Same thing happened to me, saved the recording on memory card so I could show my brother later hehe.

pretty nice graphics for the time.. memories :D :,D wanna go back
frame rate was nice too.
Except that this is running on an emulator which has increased the resolution massively.
After 26 years this is still better than wreck fest.

1997-1999 I always used to buy the Playstation Magazines and they always included this DEMO CD. This old times were always cool.
