  • Welcome to my personal review for Rose “The ancient mariner “-(Ausoutcry) from David Austin roses
    My most requested review of all time! Launched in 2015. This is a handsome graceful and very well proportioned rose eventually creating a shrub around 4’ x 4’ is also available as a standard or tree rose which because of its graceful arching habit works incredibly well.
    Perfect for growing in full sun or partial shade it also makes a perfect informal hedge
    The foliage is dark green deeply serrated around the edges, and has slight mossing and barbs to the back of the leaf stems although the thorn count for the shrub itself is very low making this perfect for cutting and bringing into the house
    Flowers are produced freely from mid June in wave after wave of repeat born both singly and in small sprays of between three and five heads to a stem
    Flowers open from Candy pink highly textured buds, and in the early stages they are loosely cupped, keeping the flower tidy and neat. There’s a very distinctive six point star displayed in the ruffled petals at the very centre of the flower in the latter stages as the flower opens fully a golden cluster of statements is displayed at the very centre and as the colour fades from the bloom they take on a dusty pink violet tinge as the pigment leaches out similar to that displayed in “mill on the floss”
    enjoying great disease, resistance and health, the fragrance changes in different stages of the flower when it first opens its fresh, zesty and citrus in its notes and by the time the flower opens fully it’s mirth based warm peppery spicy with notes of sandalwood cloves and oak. It carries beautifully on the wind.
    Hardy in zones 4 to 11 the pedal count is high at (160 per head)without affecting its ability to open in adverse weather conditions
    Fragrance rating 5⭐️s

    So Ben, now I'm going to buy this beautiful rose. After your review about James Galway, I ordered 2. They are mesmerising, I live in Northern Italy and the light in my backyard is enough. Thanks 😊

    This is one of my favourite David Austin roses and I've always wondered why it doesn't get talked about as much. Thanks for giving it a well deserved glowing review.

      I’m glad that you enjoyed it and I’m also very pleased that you enjoy yours. This one has flown under the radar for me so I’m glad to have finally given it some time. I’m sure that now it’s had the full gardnerben treatment many more people will be able to enjoy it

    I'm not a big fan of DA roses but this one performs perfectly. Great health and finally a really long lasting bloom.

    Love your reviews, so much great info! If you had to choose between this one and Princess Alexandra of Kent, which would you choose? I am limited on space and was planning to go for PAK, but now that I saw this review I am feeling torn 🌹🌹

    Love this rose. I question it being 4 feet tall at maturity as mine is taller than I am and I am 5 ft. 7 inches tall. Loaded with flowers this past spring and mine bloomed third week of may which is early in my past experience with this rose.

      May I ask whereabouts you grow and yes you’re right the seasons are all a little distorted I’m afraid this year many things came into flower well before they should’ve done then we experience the real LOL and everything really slowed down and now everything is very much behind

    Hi Ben! Love watching your Channel. Please may you advise me on the Ancient Mariner VS the Elizabeth. I have a Large tub in the shade and need a really hardworking rose with the best scent and disease resistance. Your thoughts please out of the AM / Elizabeth. Thankyou Ben

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Personally, I feel the fragrance is stronger on Elizabeth but I find her habit a bit sprawly and untidy. She desperately needs support and therefore is always given a wigwam. Ancient mariner is much tidier uniform and its growth and produces fewer but larger showing your flowers.

    Hi Ben, how does this compare with Silas Marner please? With limited space left in my garden I have to make a hard choice. Scent is very important to me (from the Austins I know I like best the scent of Wollerton Hall), but also repeat, health, and lasting power of blooms. Been also considering Blush Noisette as an alternative. Have watched all your individual reviews for these and still I struggle. What's your advice please?

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Blush noisette is a must have climber, Silas marner has an 8⭐️fragrance rating and is a former no #1 most recommended rose of mine this one is lovely but I’ve rated it at a 5⭐️fragrance rating
